help transmittting to all those
with whom they discussed their
work. As he was more and more
drawn into educational and cul-
tural activities ofa positive char-
acter, Mr. Warburg opened his
mind to at least certain implica-
tions of Zionism and though the
development of his interest in
Palestine was gradual and slow.
but it ultimately reached a climax
when he visited the land of Is-
rael, and he and especially Mrs.
Wirburg were so tremendously
impressed by the flowering of the
new colonies. Thus the land it-
self finished the job that Dr.
hlagnes had begun in interesting
the Warburgs in the Palestine
ideal especially through the means
of the Hebrew University of Jer-
usalem. The formation of the
People's Relief Committee, the
work of the East Side Jewish In-
stitute, the calling of the first
Jewish Congress to which Mr.
Warburg became a contributor,
the visit here of Dr. Shmaryah
Levin in the interest of the then
proposed Moira Jewish Technical
School, later the arrival of his
cousin Prof. Otto Warburg,
brought further contacts with our
Zionist circle and these relations
constantly enlarged the man's in-
terest and brought him forward as
a participant in the broader Jew-
ish affairs.
But the central and absorbing
interests of his life was the found-
mpg and the almost world-wide
operations of the American Joint
Distribution Committee, which
carried on the tremendous task
of caring for the Jewish war suf-
ferers in Europe. That far-reach-
ing activity, including the dif-
ferences of opinion that were in-
volved, is a story by itself—a
story the unfoldment of which
will rear a permanent monument
to the man.
There is one incident relating
to that story, which affected the
lot of the Ukranian_Jews. A dele-
gation representing several or-
ganizations with the late Dr.
Abraham Coralnick as president
of the Federation of Ukranian
Jews called at Mr. Warburg's of-
flee on William Street to petition
him for more extensive assistance.
This question," pleaded Dr.
Coralnick, "should once and for
all be settled."
"Once for all." said Mr. War-
burg with smiling persuavisness,
'gibts nicht im Judenthum." "Once
for all gibts nicht im Juden-
thum I" Was it the non-Zionist
realizing at last the enormity and
duration of the Jewish problem?
His-subsequent utterances on Pal-
estine showed an ever deeper un-
derstanding of the _tragic plight
and baffling destiny of Israel.
