An Historic Event for Detroit

ti

I

The formation of the Jewish Commu-
nity Council of Detroit is an historic event
for our community, and the impressive as-
sembly at which the foundation was laid
for this unifying instrument justified the
expectations of its founders.
It was a great gathering, and the sin-
cerity with which spokesmen for a major-
ity of Detroit Jewry assumed their re-
sponsibilities under the new community
set-up is a tribute to our people. Even in
their fondest expectations, the organizers
of the movement did not dare imagine that
anything as splendid and as immense in
community achievement would be reached
as a result of an unified community move-
ment.
The devotion displayed in the formation
of the Council provides encouragement in
the further expectations that the pressing
community problems will be dealt with
seriously and unselfishly. There are is-
sues which affect us internally; there are
Jewish needs that have to be attended to;
there are numerous outbursts of discrimin-
ation against Jews in employment, in uni-
versities, on practically every front. It is
a program that will tax the energy of the
most devoted group of leaders. Hereto.
fore this program has been divided be-
tween numerous groups and individuals.
The brunt of responsibility was carried by
the Detroit section of the American Jew-
ish Congress, by the Bnai Brith and by a
handful of individual men and women.
Through the Council, these efforts will
have to be co-ordinated. Being co-ordin-
ated, it is certain that better, results will
be achieved.
The formation 'of the Jewish Commu-
nity Council is the happiest occurrence in
the life of the Jewish community of De-
troit. May this new central organization
continue to gain in strength, in order that
our people may have the voice of an or-
ganized public opinion that has not been
heard effectively until now.

for such a people that small area is not
even sufficient on which to place firmly the
soles of its feet. And in congratulating the
head of the Keren Kayemeth, Mr. Ussish-
kin, I pray that he will be sufficiently dar-
ing of soul during scores of years to acquire
the soil inch by inch so that he, and we
with him, may reach that day when the
area of land redeemed will correspond to
the full height of the people of Israel."
In this beautiful sentiment is expressed
the aspiration of the Jewish people,
through the instrument of the Jewish Na-
tional Fund. We hope to see the Jewish
people acquire the stature it should pos-
sess as the equal of the nations of the
world. The upbuilding of Palestine is the
most important step in that direction. A
successful land-redemption fund will make
this possible.,
The delegates coming here to partici-
pate in the conference deliberations have
a grave responsibility. It will be their duty
to help plan the program of work for the
coming years, regardless of the decisions
that are finally to be reached on the re-
port of the Royal Commission. Whatever
happens, the work in Palestine must go
on. In view of which, the delegates com-
ing here should be encouraged in their
tasks. We join in welcoming them to De-
troit.

Unity on Hospital Question

Proponents of the plan for the construc-
tion of a Jewish hospital have won their
first victory. The unification of all groups
interested in the movement is a signal tri-
umph.! Furthermore, the resolution adopt-
ed by the board of governors of the Jew-
ish Welfare Federation is a concession that
has hitherto been denied the advocates of
the movement. By conducting a survey of
hospitalization problems, the Federation
is certain to provide the strongest weapon
in the movement for a hospital, especially
if the question of discrimination against
Jewish internes and doctors at hospitals
and universities will be taken into consid-
eration. Unless a very radical change in
the hospital situation takes place at once—
and this is certainly improbable—then the
advocates of a Jewish hospital movement
may certainly consider their cause a pros-
pering one, and their battle assured of
triumph.

Is Black a Baal Teshuvah?

Supreme Court Justice Hugo L. Black's
statement in explanation of his previous
affiliation with the Ku Klux Klan proved
a sad disappointment. Mr. Justice Black
devoted a considerable portion of his
speech to emphasis on his friendship with
a Jewish attorney and placed stress on
his support for the Presidency of the Cath-
olic, Al Smith, but what he left out of his
speech spoiled the effects of the good sen-
timents that he uttered.
We had hoped that Mr. Black, who ap-
parently has no prejudices and whose
pledge to be tolerant to all groups and
religions we accept on its face value,
would either condemn the Ku Klux Klan
or be a bit more specific relative to his dis-
association with this dastardly movement.
As we stated on several previous occasions,

A nation in the process of achieving nationhood
or regaining nationhood cannot afford to pause
too long for retrospect. The past must serve as
a springboard for the future. The 35th anniver-
sary of the Jewish National Fund, which calls for
retrospect upon its past, compels even more urg-
ently a thought to its future.
In the process of building Israel's nationhood
in Eretz Israel, the Keren Kayemeth Lelsrael has
truly been an enduring foundation. Land is the
fundamental commodity in the life of a nation.
For the Jew the return to the soil has also been
a cure for his soul, restoring wholesomeness to
his life. When the land foundation is safeguarded
as national inalienable property demanding work
as the warrant for its use, it becomes moreover a
project in social idealism and economic justice.
These several Indispensable ends, both practical
and idealistic, the Keren Kayemeth has served to
bring to Israel in Israel's llomeland, in the 36
years which have elapsed. We have just cele-
brated 40 years of organized Zionism. It was al-
together consistent with the Zionist ideal that
within a few years after its organization, almost
as soon as it passed the crises of infancy and its
vitality wile assured, there should have come into

The fiscal period, which con-
cluded on Oct. 1, was a record
year in the fund-raising history of
the ,Jewish National Fund of
America. Within that per i o d
American contributions for Pales-
tine land redemption, raised
through the traditional methods
of Heron Kayemeth as well as
through its participation in the
current United Palestine Appeal,
amounted to more than ;700,000—
the highest sum ever contributed
within a single year. As the J. N.
F. 35th anniversary year draws to
a close, the total of America's
participation in the fundamental
work of providing a national land
foundation for the Jewish renais-
sance in Palestine stands at $5,-

which gut across all party lines.
The parties and groups compris-

every clime were holding continu-

in a tense and heated atmosphere.
The hall of Zurich's Dancing

Up in little old New York the
Giants and Yankees are now play-
ing what the sports writers call
the annual fall classic of baseball.
For the fifth time Pop Knicker-
bocker's baseball fans are having
the pleasure of seeing a nickel
World Series, as Gotham's Giants
and Yanks battle it out for the
world's baseball championship.
Squatting behind the batter for
the Giants is big Harry Denning
on whose broad shoulders and
heavy bat and rifle-like throwing
arm Manager Bill Terry is bank-
ing heavily to win the series.
That's a tough assignment for the
young Jewish star from Chicago,
particularly since at the beginning
of the season he was only the sec-
end-string backstop and not highly
thought of by his manager.
But baseball is the sort of game
in which today's hero is Minor-
row's bum and vice versa, Hence,
we find that Denning, the forgot-
ten man of the Giants at the out-
set of the pennant rare, goes into

plenty of damage to those Yankee
pitchers. Harry is no newcomer to
the Giants. Ile e been around for

five years and, except for occa-
sional odd chores, never was given
■ chance to show that he could do.
In last year's World Series he
broke into the box score once or
twice as a pinch-hitter and, but
for an accident, he might still be
getting a health coat of tan and
wearing out his pants warming
the Giants' bench.
Until July 13, Denning was just
another one of Bill Terry's ball-
players, waiting in vain for an op-
portunity, But on that day Gus
Mancuso, the National League's
best receiver and the Giants'
standby, was put out of commis-
sion when his finger got in the
way of a foul tip. That gave Defi-
ning his long-awaited chance.
Terry never thought much of his
Jewish catcher. Some say he never
even spoke to him. But when Man-
cuso was put on the shelf, Terry
had to call on Denning. And is he
