Annual Education Month
To the United Hebrew Schools of De-
troit goes the distinction of having estab-
lished the tradition for observing annually
an Education Month during which the
cause of Jewish learning gains impetus,
and parents are encouraged to provide a
good Jewish education for their children.
Since the establishment of this traditional
observance in Detroit, communities
throughout the country have adopted the
practice, and now the National Jewish
Education Association is also observing a
specially-set period in the year for the
purpose of propagating the cause of Jew-
ish learning.
While at first thought the observance
of a special Education Month sounds like
a ballyhoo, in reality its observance is not
sensational, nor is it unnecessary. On the
contrary, it is conducted on a very digni-
fied basis and is a most necessary institu-
tion. There are tens of thousands of Jew-
ish boys and girls who go through life
without any knowledge whatever of Jew-
ish life or Jewish contributions to civiliza-
tion. It is the obligation of the Jewish com-
munity to urge as many of the uninformed
as can possibly be reached to make use
of the opportunities made available for
them and to acquire a Jewish education.
The schools are available, there are ex-
cellent teachers, and all that is needed is
the desire on the part of the parents to
encourage their children to attend He-
brew schools.
Education Month, by reaching thousands
upon thousands who could not otherwise
be reached in behalf of our schools, be-
comes a most important Jewish observance.
It is an institution deserving to be perpet-
uated because it is the best available
means of propagating to parents in be-
. half of Jewish learning.
Nazis Spread "Protocols"
Revival by Nazis of the stupid lie con-
tained in the so-called Protocols of the
Elders of Zion is excellent proof of the
shallowness of Hitlerist ideology. No at-
tempt is made to prove the case advanced
by the Nazis. They make a bold statement,
denounce the decision handed down by a
Swiss court as devoid of truth, charge that
only Jewish witnesses were heard—thus
adding untruth to the pack of lies already
concocted—and let the matter rest at that.
The statement by the Nazis, which we
quoted in full, is its own sharpest defier.
Anyone who seeks the truth will know how
to evaluate such nonsense. The trouble
with it is that it may fall into hands and
minds that are impressed only with at-
tacks on the Jews and swallow anything
that is said about our people. In that
case, Nazi propaganda becomes damag-
ing. It is for this type of gullible person
that there must be continuous propagan-
dising of the truth on our part. For every
piece of literature libelling us, it is neces-
sary to have one preaching the truth. The
sooner we adopt such an educational pro-
gram, the stronger will be our case.
The Freethinkers' Solution
Joseph Lewis, president of the Free-
thinkers of America, has issued his annual
Yom Kippur message to the Jews of
America and again warns: "Not until the
Jews give up their primitive religious be-
liefs will they be free from persecution."
Yom Kippur he calls "the most humiliat-
ing day in all superstitious annals of reli-
gion," and his plea is that the Jews should
"use this day for religious independence."
It was a lot of fun reading Mr. Lewis'
tirade. Fifty years ago he might have
won some converts. Then anti-Semitism
was still based primarily on religious hat-
red. Today it is the least important as-
pect of the world's dislike for the Jew. In
our time we find people who hate the
Jews because we are all Marxists and are
aiming at a Bolshevist world revolution.
(Read Hitler's addresses for proof). There
are anti-Semites who would devour us
because we control the finances of the
world and are the international bankers.
(Read Coughlin for proof). Others, like
the racial geniuses of the Nazi regime,
dislike us because we are non-Aryans and
racially different from Goebbels, Goering,
et al. Still others dislike us because we
use Christian blood on Passover. (Read
Julius Streicher's rag).
Therefore, to be freed from persecution
we must abandon our religious beliefs,
stop thinking economically, refuse to
handle money, transfuse our blood in
some miraculous fashion. In truth, the
anti-Semites say that the only way in
which we can become free men is by be-
coming dead men.
But we insist on living. (Read the
Psalms: "I shall not die but live, to de-
clare the works of the Lord."). There-
fore all solutions offered by our friends
who want us to give up this, that or the
other thing are useless. Our only true
friends are those who say: "We recognize
you for what you are. You have a right
to your opinions. You have a right to
your religion, to your share of radicals
and bankers, even to your criminals. We
accept you on an equal footing with all
human beings. ,Humanity stands above
parties, races, creeds. Even when we dif-
fer with you we shall fight unto the bitter
end that you be given the privilege of ex-
pressing your views freely. That is a hu-
man right—and by protecting your rights
we guarantee the perpetuation of our own
rights."
Such is the democratic ideal. Only
when this thought survives will we be able
to say that the world is safe for democ-
racy.

The Good Fellow in Politics
In politics you must be a good fellow.
If you are a candidate for office, you may
be called upon to deliver an address at a
German meeting at which the swastika is
displayed in the early evening and at a
Jewish rally later that same night. You
will laud the Poles in the morning and the
Italians'in the afternoon. Those who have
Jewish constituents in their district will
plant Le-Shonah Tovah cards for their
Jewish friends and will sing paeans of
tribute to them over the radio. The Con-
gressman or the Senator or the Mayor who
has Danish or Italian or,Spanish voters
to cater to will memorize a few facts about
the history of each group and will know
how to pat his neighbor on the back and
greet him with a smile. Some politicians
even learn a few words of the language
of the group they must depend upon for
election.
Southern politicians may also join ,the
Klan. It is good politics to be a joiner.
But the wise politician does not discrimin-
ate in favor of one element. He joins all
groups. There are non-Jewish politicians
who became members of the Bnai Brith.
Some even paid dues to synagogues. Su-
preme Court Justice Hugo L. Black joined
the Klan. But he also joined the Masons,
the Odd Fellows, the Order of Moose and
the Knights of Pythias. Being a Baptist
he could not join the Knights of Colum-
bus, but he did appoint four Jews and nine
Catholics to important jobs that pay high
salaries.
Jewish politicians, if they are wise to
their own needs, are not an exception to
the rule. An eastern Jewish Congressman
a short time ago even inserted in the Con-
gressional Record a tribute to a visiting
Polish general who was responsible for
pogroms. We upbraided him for it and
his unconvincing explanation was for priv-
ate consumption only.
Being aware of the sentiments that mo-
tivate candidates for public office, and
knowing at the same time that in actuality
former Senator Black did not have such a
bad record in office, we refused to become
excited over the disclosures made by a
very enterprising newspaperman. We pre-
fer to await Mr. Black's own explanation
before passing judgment upon him. For
the sake of public good and of the Presi-
dent, we hope that when- it comes it will
satisfy American citizens that they have
little to fear from his membership in the
highest court in the land. It is still within
the memory of even the youngest voters
that Louis Dembitz "Brandeis was also
painted in the blackest colors when he was
appointed by President Wilson. Mr. Jus-
tice Black may turn out to be a great
jurist.
Hillel Foundation Program
An ambitious program is announced by
the Hillel Foundation of the University of
Michigan for the coming year. Courses are
to be offered in Jewish history, the Bible,
Jewish ethics, literature, medicine among
the Jews, Talmudic precepts and person-
alities and other subjects.
The opportunities for study under the
direction of Dr. Bernard Heller, the direc-
tor of the foundation, are immense. The
Hillel cultural program is like a miniature
college. If taken advantage of, this course
of study is an excellent preparatory
school for leadership in Jewish life.
Will Jewish students take advantage of
the opportunity to take Jewish courses un-
der the guidance of the Hillel Founnda-
tion? We wish we could answer this ques-
tion more optimistically than we are in-
clined to feel towards the Jewish students.
Facing realities, we are compelled to ad-
mit that Jews in the universities have been
among the most indifferent to the cause
of Judaism, and even to the plight of the
Jews. Even in the heyday of progress of
the former Intercollegiate Menorah Asso-
ciation and the Intercollegiate Zionist Or-
ganization, and more recently under the
Hillel Foundation, only a handful of Jews
ever displayed sufficient interest to become
members, and of those enrolled only a few
displayed sufficient interest to participate
in the organizations' cultural activities.
Apathy and indifference dominate their
ranks ,and the prospects for increased de-
votion are far from encouraging.
Those who are in charge of the cultural
Jewish programs in our universities are
not to be envied in their efforts to encour-
age an interest in Jewish affairs. That is
why they ought to be given as much en-
couragement as possible in order that their
tasks should be made easier.
At the same time, a duty devolves upon
Jewish parents not only to prepare their
children for deeper interest in Jewish af-
fairs, but for unstinted devotion that will
not be checked even in a university's at-
mosphere that tends to entice our youth
away from Jewish life.

A PROFILE .
CEREMONIES IN JEWISH LIFE. By Rabbi Jacob D.
Sehwurtz. Union of American Hebrew I.:mire/talons,
Cincinnati (50c).
The revival of ceremonies in Jewish life has
been resorted to by Reform synagogues as a
means of "turning the tide" back to Judaism. In
his interesting book, "Ceremonies in Jewish Life,"
Rabbi Jacob D. Schwartz describes how "Reform
or Liberal or Progressive Judaism deliberately les-
sened the emphasis on formal observance and sanc-
tioned the abolition of such ceremonies as had
seemingly outlived their usefulness and had lost
their meaning or appeal." The result was reli-
gious apathy in the synagogue and the home,• and
the rabbis have therefore reintroduced ceremonial-
ism in order to turn the tide back.
It was no easy task to undo the damage of the
past years. But progress is being recorded. The
revitalization of the holidays, the reintroduction
in the synagogue and the home of ceremonials
like the kiddush and the lighting of the Sabbath
and Chanukah lights, have helped restore tee spirit
of devotion and loyalty.
Discussing' the Sabbath observances previously
and at the present time, Rabbi Schwartz tells
how late Friday evening services have brought the
congregations closer to Jewish tradition, He shows
how the observance of Chanukah and Purim have
been made occasions for family events which have
helped revive the traditional spirit of the holidays.
The observance of the Festival of Freedom (Pass-
over), the revitalization of Succoth. ceremonies in
the home and synagogue—these are interestingly
dealt with. In his conclusion to the chapter on
"Revival of Ceremonies" Rabbi Schwartz writes:

The George Gershwin memorial

Many tourists return from Germany with glow-
ing reports about the country. It is only in ex-
ceptional instances that some are able to detect
despair under the surface. It is natural that the
tourists should return with opinions complimen-
tary to the German people. They are, after all,
like other peoples, except that they are ruled by
a despotic government. Why is it that travelers
fail to recognize the existing despotism?
Some time ago Bertrand Russell wrote an ar-
ticle for the New Statesman and Nation of London
in which he explained it as follows:
". . . It is easy to go to Germany or Russia
without seeing anything of the terrorism which
exists in both countries, and it is easy to imagine
that it cannot exist, or cannot be very bad, if it
is not obvious. But naturally no government, and
no private enterprise, wishes its cruelties to be
obvious. We all know that vast numbers of sheep
and oxen are daily slaughtered for our pleasure,
but we do not see this happening. If it were to
the interest of a despotic government to pretend
that the meat we eat comes from animals that
have died a natural death, innumerable tourists
would come forward to say that they had never
seen an animal killed for food. If the sheep and
oxen could speak, one of them might occasionally
escape and describe the shambles, but would be
condemned as hysterical. We profit by sufferings
which we would not ourselves inflict. One can
neither deny atrocities nor assume that nations
which tolerate them must be composed of men
and women who are individually odious."
