birthday the Jews of Czechoslo-
vakia paid tribute to him by con-
tributing 50,000 kronen to char-
ity and raising an equal sum for
the establishment of Kfar Alas-
aryk in Palestine in his honor. As
a further symbol of the esteem in
which Jewry held him. he was
elected ■ freeman of the all-
Jewish city of Tel Aviv, a dis-
tinction conferred upon only two
other Christians, General Allenby
and Lord Balfour.
During the post-war years,
when the idealism that had given
birth to Czechoslovakia was being
displaced by reaction throughout
Europe, Masaryk steadfastly kept
his country on the road to de-
mocracy. Years before Hitler,
when life was already intolerable
for Jewish students In Eastern
Europe, he let it be known that
they would Inn welcome in Czech
universities. When Jewish refu-
gees began to pour out of Ger-
many in 1933 and 1934, Masaryk
saw to it that thousands of them
found a haven of refuge in Czech-
oslovakia. Under his rule every
attempt to introduce anti-Semit-
ism Into the politics, schools and
business of Czechoslovakia was
nipped in the bud. To anti-Se-
mitic student rioting at the Ger-
man university of Prague ho re-
plied by appointing German Jew-
ish refugee professors to the fac-
ulty,
Masaryk is dead but he leaves
as his indestructible monument
the great Republic of Czechoslo-
vakia. Humanitarian, scholar,
nation-builder and towering rep-
resentative of democracy in dic-
tatorship-ridden Europe, Masaryk
was one of the handful of per-
sonalities that retained their

greatness after the World War.
In the very heart of Europe he
built a state that teaches by ex
ample the advantages of liberty
over despotism. No narrow chau
vinist, he championed the free-
dom of his own people, but al-
ways insisted that minovities b
given a square deal. Masaryk
was not a philo-Semite, but a
right-thinking and liberty-loving
statesman who could not endure
oppression or persecution of any
sort. Anti-Semitism was hateful
to him. Ills life-long attitude of
simple justice to the Jews, de-
void of sentimental and platitu-
dinous expressions of friendship,
stood the Jews in better stead for
three generations than the more
demonstrative but less practical
behavior of other political lead-
ers who were Masaryk's contem-
poraries.
