large number and great variety
of Jews, and, being interested
in things Jewish, spoke with
them at great length. The in-
tense tempo of the Productive
process requires manpower,
I b r of bands and of brains,
and the Jew. were glad to let
themselves to be drawn into
this work; this was favorable
to the progress of assimilation,
which has advanced further
there than anywhere else. At
times Jews even said to me:
"It is years since I have thought
of the fact that I em • Jew;
only your questions reminded
me of it." Deeply touching is
the unanimity with which the
Jews whom I met emphasied
how thoroughly they agree with
the new government. Former-
ly they had been despised and
persecuted, men without a trade
or profession and without •
purpose in life, "Luftmen•
schen," now they are farmers
or industrial workers or intel-
lectuals or soldiers, and filled
with gratitud e for the new

order.
An amazing phenomenon is the
avidity with which the Jews to
whom the pursuit of agriculture
had been closed so long, threw
hemselves into this work when at
ast it was opened to them. Dele-
gations from several Jewish agri-
cultural communes came to me
with invitations to inspect their
ettlements. However, I was more
nterested in hearing what non-
Jewish Russian peasants had to
ay about these kolkhoz colonies;
here, if anywhere, I thought, anti-
Semitism would be bound to reveal
tself. I learned that originally
hese non-Jewish peasants had
really harbored all sorts of super-
stitions concerning the nature of
he Jews and that, in particular,
hey had been convinced of the tit-
er unsuitability of Jews for farm-
ng. But today the remembrance of
hose old prejudices evokes only a
s heepish smile. They told use of
t he intense but friendly rivalry
between the non-Jewish and Jew-
sh settlements in the Ukraine, the
Crimea and the Don region. And
ome Don Cossacks told me that
heir ancient suspicion of the Jews
was destroyed not so much be-
c ause the latter turned out to be
t h.. better farmers, but because

Why do religions differ? What
is the Jewish view as to whether
there can be more than one re-
vealed religion?
A Jewish viewpoint on this
question is given by Prof. Sam-
uel S. Cohon. He quotes the
Jewish philosopher, Joseph Alba
(1380.14441 as suggesting the
answer. The latter debates the
question: "Can there be more
than one revealed religion?" Ile
argues that from the !standpoint
of God, the giver of the law,
only one religion is possible. How-
ever, from the standpoint of the
recipients of the law, there must
be more than one, owing to the
different geographic, economic
and psychic factors which enter
their lives.
A religion suitable to a group
of people living in the desert may
not fit people who live on a fer•
tile island. The differences be-
tween one religion and the other
ail!, therefore, consist not in
their vital essence, which is the
same for all men, but rather in
the secondary elements which
grow out of the local and tem-
poral variations of the characters
of the groups.
"Accordingly," Albo concludes,
"two revealed religions may exist
simultaneously among two dif-
ferent peoples, each leading its
adherents to human perfection or
salvation, though in different
ways, corresponding to the char-
acter of each religion."
The principle laid down by
Albo, Prof. Cohon remarks, has
come to be the foundation of all
modern scientific study of re-
ligion.

The nationalism of the Jews of l
Soviet Russia is distinguished by
a sort of sober enthusiasm. How
unromantic, practical and daring
it is emerges from two facts: To
begin with, it has chosen as its
language not the noble, traditional

The soundness and effectiveness
of the policy of the Soviet Union
with regard to its component na-
tionalities was most clearly re-
vealed to me by its method of solv-
ing the ancient, troublesome and
apparently unsolvable Jewish
problem. The Czarist minister
Plehve, to cite his own words,
could think of only one solution:
To force one-third of the Jews to
become converted, another third to
emigrate and the remaining third
to starve to death. The Soviet
Union found another way out. A
large proportion of its five million
Jews have become assimilated, and
at the disposal df the others it
has placed a large autonomous
territory and means for its coloni-
zation — and thus has acquired
several millions of hard-working,
intelligent citizens who have be-
come fervent adherents of the
Soviet regime.
In the Soviet Union I met a
