One thing seems to be certain, that

an eyesore for the modern Tel

Small though as Palestine is,
every city has its own character ex-
pressed in terms of its architecture.
Although nearly the same systems
of construction prevails through-
out Palestine, that is, reinforced
concrete column and beam con-
struction, the external appearance
harmonizes with the spirit of every
city. It expresses perfectly the life
that is going on within:
New Haven, Michigan

nomic basis, a city that thrives on
immigration and tourism. This im-
pression accords well with the spir-
it of youthful enthusiasm and vigor
that are characteristic of the city
although a sturdy cultural and eco-
nomic life has already taken root
there.
Up north, on the coast, only with-
in a two-hour ride from Tel-Aviv,
lies Palestine's modern port, Haifa.
Here th% buildings tell one a diff-
erent story. Most of them are of
the monolithic reinforced concrete
type of construction, some of them
faced with stones. These buildings,
having as a setting the towering I

significance, the air pugnant with
mysteries of bygone days. The
same type of stone that is found in
the vicinity of Jerusalem is used
for facing of the buildings. Even
the sidewalks until lately were
paved with flat stones. The ten-
dency toward modern architecture
is as great in Jerusalem as in Tel-
Aviv, but the stone element gives a
different character to the whole
city.
The planning and style of the
buildings in the small settlements
is influenced and governed by de-
fense factors. For instance, one
large settlement in the Emek
Manufacturers of
(Nahalal) is planned in a circular
form. All streets converge in the
central part where specially con-
structed buildings could take in
most of the population in case the

the very advanced countries. All
new homes and apartment build-

stallations, a continuous hot water
supply system and very often a
central heating installation. Gas
