Feldman, editor of the Hartford

LAUGHING THROUGH TEARS

Gloom rather than gaiety was the dominating character
of Jewish news last year. But from the mass of reports of
suffering, tragedy ■ and sorrow there occasionally appeared
■ yarn that enabled the Jewish world momentarily to laugh
through its tears. Some of the heartiest laughs were pro-
voked by the story that the Joachim von Ribbentrop, Nazi
envoy to London, and a notorious anti-Semite, found it neces-
sary to allow • Jewish brain specialist to cure his young
daughter. Similar grins spread over Jewish faces when it
was disclosed that a number of blackshirt followers of Sir
Oswald Mosley had been fed at the soup kitchen maintained
for the Jewish poor in Manchester. The sh•dchen, long
subject of merriment among Jews, again stirred good-natured
raillery when a Canadian judge ruled that the Jewish mar.
riage-broker was not an 'outworn anachronism but • positive
benefactor of mankind who is entitled to be paid for his
services. And loud was the glee of the Jews in Rumania as
they watched two factions of anti-Semites battle each other
in the streets of Bucharest, forgetting for the nonce their
usual victims. The epidemic of strikes in America yielded
• funny Jewish incident when • Jewish employer in Massa-
chusetts picketed his own establishment so that one of his
striking employes might have time to get • shave. Deeply
concerned- over the political crisis, Palestinian Jewry still
found a laugh in the sight of Jewish actors, singers and ar-
tists, selling hot dogs on the streets of Tel Aviv to eke out
a living. And the German Jews permitted themselves a few
hushed chuckles when they learned that • sJewish film director
had incorporated anti-Nazi scenes in a picture produced under
the eyes of the Nazi film chiefs.

Doctor's Degrees Barred to Ger
man Jews

BERLIN (WNS)—Granting o
doctor's degrees to German Jew
in law. medicine, religion and phil
osophy were banned in a new de-
cree issued by the ministry of
education. At the same time the
Journal of the Academy of Ger-
man Law made public a decision
by the supmere court barring
Jewish charitable institutions from
tax exemption. The decision was
based on the theory that only such
activities are charitable which are
directed exclusively toward the
support of German racial com-
rades. Since the Nazis have no
desire to facilitate the support of
Jews, tax exemption is denied to
their institutions.

Non-Aryan Film Director Flees
Reich When Goebbels Spots
Anti-Nazi Satire

Reinhold Schuenzel, Jewish film
director who had been permitted
to retain his job in Germany be-
cause Hitler took a fancy to his
work, left the Reich suddenly for
parts unknown when Propaganda
Minister Goebbels, dictator of the
film world, caught on to a piece
of anti-Nazi satire incorporated
into the script of a film after it
had won the approval of the
Nazi censors. Enraged by the
daring of Schuenzel, Goebbels or-
dered the picture, "Land of
Love." suppressed. The piece of
satire takes a crack at the Nazis'
stressing of physical development
and control of literature.

God is our refuge and strength,

a very present help in trouble.
