held June 28 and 29, when pros-
pective pupils for the summer ses-
sion registered, and on July 6 and
7, when they were examined by
the Play School medical commit-
tee, headed by Dr. A. Max Kohn.
The examinations covered the
children's hearts, lungs, skin,
teeth, eyes, ears, nose and throat.
Through the co-operation of Dr.
Meder, of the Detroit Board of
Health, nose and throat cultures
were taken and five children were
eliminated from the prospective
roster as suspected of being car-
riers. or of being infected with
diseases which might have, other-
wise, spread through the play
school.
Assisting Dr. Kohn were Drs.
Benjamin Parker, A. C. Hambur-
ger, Benjamin M. Schutzman,
Barney Nosanehuk, Perry Burn-
stein, Davis A. Benson, Max Schol-
nik and B. Thumin. Also assist-
ing were Dr. Leon A. Katzin, who
gave the dental examinations, and
Drs. A. N. Prussin, J. L. Drum-
mond, I. Denis and It. M. Peck-
ham, who gave eye examinations.
As a result of the examinations,
follow-up program has been car-
ried out by Mrs. Sam Rubin, med-
ical worker for the Play School,
and parents or child care agencies
have b2en notified of the medical
findings. Arrangements are being
made for necessary dental work,
for treatment or for surgery where
these have been found necessary.
Before the public schools open,
90 pupils of the Play School will
have had dental work done that I
would otherwise not have been dis-
covered to be necessary.
Scholarships at the Play School
were provided for some 60 chil-
dren, and partial scholarships for
66 youngsters. In addition, 75
pupils paid their own tuition to
take advantage of the opportuni-
ties offered. Scholarships were
provided by the Jewish Social
Service Bureau, Jewish Child
Placement Bureau, Mother's Pen-
End Clinic, Neugarten Sunshine
sion, 'Welfare Department, North
Club, Zedakah Club, and the Home
Relief Society.
School sessions were held from
9 a. m. until 3:30 p. m., with a
half-day being spent indoors and
half outdoors on the Center's
playground or on that of North-
ern High School, made available
to the Center through the Board
of Education. The Center's play-
ground, a gift in memory of Leon
H. Frank, had been especially pre-
pared for the summer session. It
was lined for deck tennis, bad-
minton, handball, shuffleboard and
volleyball. Also added for the
convenience of the children were
a drinking fountain and a street
shower, provided by Mrs. Frank.
