By FRANK COUZENS Mayor of Detroit — The two eminent Christian scholars, whose "Hebrew Reli- gion" is now available in its sec- ond and revised edition, in their extensive study express their con- viction that the religion of Israel culminated in the Gospel. It is clear that this volume contains the ultra-Christian at- titude on the subject of Judaism. "The God of Jesus and of His followers," the authors say in their conclusion, "is indeed the Yahweh of Moses and of Israel and the story we have tried to trace in the foregoing pages is the record of that long growth and training which culmiriated in Calvary. Henceforward we can look with confidence and hope to the coming of a time when the kingdom of this world shall be- come the kingdom of our Lord and his Christ. This volume takes the readers back to the earliest, pre-animistic stages. traces remnants of beliefs in sacred trees and waters in the Hebrew religion, maintains that there were polytheistic and other tendencies in the early Hebrew religion. In the discussion of the Hebrew religion of the time of the exile, the authors deal with the Baby- lonian influence on the Jews. the post-exilic prophets, the influence of Hellenism on the Jews dur- ing the Greek period and the de- velopment of the Law. Speaking of the Maccabean rebellion, they say: "Religious freedom and po- litical independence were the final results of the Maccabean strug- gle." They point out that the observance of legal precepts came to be looked upon as meritorious and the New Testament and the Mishnah were the works developed during this period. Michigan Book Binding Co.
