It is not given to many men to wield as wide and as intimate an influence upon his fellow-men —especially upon the youth of his community—as has Fred But- zel. His lasting contribution to our times will be reflected in the qualities of character, tolerance, courage of conviction and in the passionate love for fellow-men of all creeds and colors, with which all who have come under Fred Butzel's tutelage were imbued. So catholic has been the scope of his altruism. so varied the fields of his philanthropic activi- ties, and so liberal his outlook, that hosts of well-wishers, here and elsewhere, Jew and Christian alike, Join in fervent prayer that his allotment may indeed go far beyond the three score years in which he has already been spared to a grateful community. TiIPP211 . • ga.4 Range, I wish to thank the worthy edi- tor of The Jewish Chronicle for his kind invitation extended to me to express my feelings and good wishes to one of the high esteemed sons of Detroit Jewry on the occa- sion of his sixtieth birthday. I Join the friends of Fred Butzel In congratulating him, who really deserves all the honors bestowed on him. May he be blessed who made his charitable work, social activi- ties and the welfare of the com- munity his goal in life and holiest task May he be blessed for his great devotion and sacrifice he of- fered to aid the less fortunate brethren here and abroad. Detroit Jewry is much indebted to Mr. Butzel not merely for his liberal contributions he always made to all causes and funds but mainly for the good example he always showed to others. I wish and pray for his long life and many, many fruitful years to come. A Life Filled With Good Deeds By HON. B. D. CHANDLER I note that Mr. Fred M. Butzel will, on next Aug. 25, celebrate his sixtieth birthday. I desire, through you, to extend to Mr. Butzel sincere congratulations upon his arrival at the sixtieth milestone of a life filled with good deeds in behalf of a human- ity that has not been as fortu- nate as himself. I have known Mr. Butzel and his philanthropies for several decades, and his work in behalf of suffering humanity is well de- serving of recognition from a rather selfish world. If all had given so unstintingly of their time and money in behalf of the under-privileged, there would be no occasion for poor-houses and welfare stations. He has done a great work and may God speed him in it. and may it be an Inspiration for oth- ers to follow in his footsteps. MOYNIHAN Judge of Circuit Court Dear Fred: It would seem almost a paradox to congratulate you upon the at- tainment of your sixtieth birth- day; it is we who should be con- gratulated on this occasion. We, and the people of this entire com- munity, who have known the genius of your leadership, the comprehensiveness of your phil- anthropy and the inspiration of your high example. The position of respect and af- fection that you hold in the hearts of our entire community, is a well deserved recognition of the many years you have devoted in the noble service of your fellow man. It is a distinct privilege to me, as one who has followed your ca- reer for so many years, to add my best wishes to those of your i nnumerable friends, and to en- press the hope that you may be spared for us all, for many years to come. IF A CAUSE IS WORTHY IT IS HIS CAUSE The Jewish Community of De- troit will celebrate with festive, grateful spirit the 60th birthday of Fred Butzel. It will gladly wel- come the solemn opportunity to ex- press its appreciation and admira- tion for the masterful personality and the imperishable services Fred Butte] has rendered to Detroit Jew- ry, to the Detroit community and to American Israel at large. The measure of the great merits and achievements and also of the matchless popularity of Fred But- zel is with us in the virility of mind and body—his name has already become a household word in the homes of Letroit Jews regardless of their social and political affilia- tions and the particular synagogue in which they worship. Just as the founders and cap- tains of the great automotive indus- try in our city represent and per- sonify to the outside world the in- ventive genius and boundless en- ergy, of our young, expanding me- ter city, so the name of Fred Butzel came to signify to Detroit Jewry the dynamic of the Jewish con- science, the' imperative urge of so- dal service, the Unity, oneness and Solidarity of Israel and the Broth- erhood of Man. Upon men of the type of Fred Butzel were in former ages con- ferred by the Grace of the People such titles of honor as "San Vgodol," a "Leader and Prince" in Israel. Indeed, the life and work of Fred Butzel would amply Justify his designation as a "Leader and Prince" in Israel, The Community spirit, the urge to consecrate and spend our life for the welfare of our fellow-men must have been born with and its Fred Butzel! I understand, that even while a young fledgling stu- dent he had already organized classes for the recent immigrants to teach. them the American lan- guage, civic duties and the Amer- ican concept of human rights and obligations. It must have been a great chal- lenge to the communal spirit of De- troit Jewry when the momentous historic hour came to weld all the many small detached groups, or- ganizations and social units of De- troit Jewry into one great powerful body which was to be charged with the task to establish and maintain the educational, recreational and charitable institutions necessitated by the needs of the young, growing modern community, and which was, in the course of time, to be linked and integrated with the large na- tional and international Jewish bodies for the upbuilding of Pales- tine and for the preservation and rescue of the uprooted, persecuted, homeless Jewish masses of East European countries. This epochal undertaking in the history of De- troit Jewry needed and round re- sponsible and inspiring leadership —in the person of Fred Butzel. Al- most every line of philanthropic work has felt the warmth of his enthusiasm and been stirred by his activity. Years ago, he grasped the significance of ideas which at that time seemed visionary and unattainable. He advocated them and worked for them persistently. It must indeed be a satisfaction to him to stand on that sixtieth mile- stone for a day and look back at such visions turned to reality as the Ford Republic. the Boys' Club, the Community Fund, Parkaide Hospital, the Michigan Unemploy- ment Compensation Commission. the City Recreation Commission, and numerous others.
