Decrease in Call
for Services at
House of Shelter

Jewish Inmates in Jails to Be
Provided With P
Books
for the Holy Days

Preparations aro being made by
officials of the Jewish House of
Shelter to provide prayer books for
Jewish inmates of the Detroit
House of Correction and the
County Jail which they may use
during the coming High Holy
Days. The House of Shelter will
not attempt to provide for the con-
ducting of :services at either the
House of Correction or the Jail,
but will send the prayer book, and
skull caps, M. E. Williams, secre-
tary of the House of Shelter,
stated. The practice has been that
the wardens of those places permit
the Jewish inmates to gather to-
gether and conduct their own ser-
vices on the appropriate days. Last
year facilities were made available
for 25 prisoners.
During the past week a report
was made public of the activities
of the Jewish House of Shelter for
the first six months of 1937,
which revealed that up to the end
of June, there were 7.223 free
meals served and 1,892 nights'
lodging provided for nearly 200
homeless and destitute men.
While the number of meals de-
creased slightly this year below the
number served in the first six
menthe of 1938, the drop in the
number of requests for nights'
lodging was sharper. Against the
7,223 meals served during the first
leg month-by-month figures re.
ported by the House of Shelter:

and THE LEGAL CHRONICLE

A special alerting of the Mlaw-
er Umgegend Verein is called by
the president, I. Fisher, for Tues-
day evening, Aug. 3, at Jericho
Temple. Refreshments and a social
hour are planned after the busi-
ness meeting at which final plans
will be made for the third annual
picnic. This year it will be held
at the Plymouth Riverside Park,
out Plymouth ltd., on Sunday, Aug.
15. The chairman of arrangements
for the picnic I. Israel Burnstein.
He announces that dinners will be
nerved all day, and amusements
and games and fun for all is
promised. For further information
and tickets, call TR 2-4053, or any
member of the organization. Tho
proceeds of the picnic go towards
relief of Jews in Poland.

half of 1937, in the same period
last year 7,657 meals were served:
while in the first six months of
1937 the house of Shelter gave
refuge to 1,892 men, in 1936 the
figure was 2,178 for the same
period.
Included in the 'number of
meals" report of the institution are
those served in both years during
Passover, when two Seder meals
were served.
During the Passover season this
year, there were included in the
"guest" list 12 Inmates from the
hospital at Eloise, brought to the
House of Shelter for the duration
of the Passover season. These 12
old men were given transportation,
shelter and food, were taken to
and from Eloise through facilities
made available to the House. While
the dozen did not include all of the
Jewish men at Eloise, it did com-
prise all who were able to be "up
and around," Mr. Williams said.
During the first half of this
year, the House cared for 139
transients and 41 resident in-
mates; in the same period lest
year, 144 transients and 50 real-
dents were given food and shelter.
A gradual decrease from Janu-
ary to June is noted in the follow-

YIDDISH FOLKS'
VEREIN DENIES
COUNCIL RUMOR

Louie Langwald Maintains This Is
First Organization to
Elect Delegates

In a statement to The Detroit
Jewish Chronicle, Louis`Langwald,
president of the Yiddish Folks'
Verein, condemns rumors that his
organization refused to join the
Jewish Community Council. His
statement follows:
"A number of rumors have been
circulated in the Jewish community
during the past few days concern-
ing the Yiddish Folks' Verein and
its membership in the Jewish
Council of Detroit. Trouble-mak-
ers, who for personal reasons wish
to place obstacles in the path of
this new communal enterprise, are
going from organiation to organi-
zation and saying that the Yiddish
Folks' Verein has refused to join
the Community Council. Thin is a
lie. The Yiddish Folks' Verein,
with Its membership of 500, was
the first verein in the city to re-
spond to the invitation for charter
membership In the Jewish Com-
munity Council. As • matter of
fact, we are Informed that we were
the first verein to elect representa-
tive for the Council.
"I also warn those individuals
who are the authors of these false
stories that I shall, as soon as I
learn their names, denounce them
publicly for seeking to discredit
our Verein in the eyes of the Jew-
ish community."
