Future of Hebrew University
Palestine's amputation by the great
British Empire leaves most Jews in a
quandary. There are many questions to be
answered. Take these as examples:
1. How will Jewish life and property
be protected in Arab territory?
2. What will become of Jewish invest-
ments in the Rutenberg concessions and
in the Dead Sea project?
3. Is there any guarantee that altruistic,
kind, proud England will not step in to
interfere with Jewish commerce and in-
dustry, with the operation of the Haifa
and Tel Aviv ports, with Jewish progress
once it begins to infect the neighboring
Arab state?
4. What about the future of the He-
brew University on Mount Scopus, in the
holy city of Jerusalem, which is included
in the territory reserved by Britain for
herself?
There are scores of other questions we
can ask at this time. But for the moment
we are primarily concerned with the last
one.
When the cornerstone was laid for the
first of the series of Hebrew University
buildings, on April 1, 1925, there was
universal rejoicing in Jewry. We cele-
brated the advent of a new era. We boast-
ed of a new step in Jewish national re-
juvenation. Until that time we built edu-
cational institutions for others, on foreign
soil. For the first time since the Dispersion
we were building a university for our-
selves, on Jewish soil! It was a. great day
for Jewry.
Today the irony of fate threatens to
make a farce of that event. Is it possible
that, unknowingly, because we trusted too
much in Great Britain's sincerity, we
blundered and built another great insti-
tution on soil which the British Empire
chooses to reserve for itself as a mandated
corridor?
How else are we to interpret Britain's
intentions? It is not so easy to uproot what
we have built on Mount Scopus and to
transplant the beautiful buildings, with
their elaborate laboratories and libraries,
on more suitable soil, in Tel Aviv, or Hai-
fa, or Nathania, or Rehoboth. It is easier
to destroy than it is to build—and the
mighty British Empire stands as a living
witness in Palestine attesting to the truth
of this contention.
Is it possible that Israel Zangwill was
right when he said that "the mountain of
Judah was in labor and gave birth—to a
mouse?"
We have been betrayed. Those who re-
joice over the proclamation of a Jewish
State in Palestine fail to see the tragedy
that is inherent in Britain's tearing to
shreds all the promises made to the Jew-
ish people.
We have been betrayed!
This year's Tisha b'Ab observance will
be marked by another reason for mourn-
ing Israel's homelessness. The Lion of
Judah remains in bondage.
On account of the Palace which is laid waste
We sit solitary, and weep.
For the sake of the Temple, which is destroyed,
We sit solitary and weep.
For the walls that are thrown down,
We sit solitary and weep.
For our glory, which bath departed from us,
We sit solitary and weep.
For our wise men, who have perished,
We sit solitary and weep.
For the precious stones, which are burnt,
We sit solitary and weep.
For our priests, who have fallen,
We sit solitary and weep.
We implore Thee to have mercy on Zion,
Re-assemble the children of Jerusalem.
Haste! Haste? 0 Redeemer of Zion,
Speak in favor of Jerusalem.
May beauty and majesty surround Zion.
Turn with Thy clemency toward Jerusalem.
Grant soon that royal power may shine upon
Zion,
Console us who weep over Jerusalem.
May peace and happiness enter Zion,
May the scepter of power turn toward
Jerusalem!"
But it is not at the Wailing Wall alone
that. Jews will mourn. Wherever there
are Jews who are concerned over the fate
of our entire people, there will he weep-
ing. But soon will come consolation, and
with it renewed vigor and strength to re-
build the waste places and to create a
home for Israel. Every setback is tem-
porary; every creative act must be per-
manent.
Why Study Hebrew?
The progress made by the United He-
brew School's and their position of pre-
eminence have not, however, completely
convinced certain elements in the com-
munity as to the necessity of providing our
children with a Hebrew education.
Why must the child be burdened with
the knowledge of another 'foreign' tongue,
some ask, sadly enough. Indeed, why
teach our children Hebrew?
A. H. Friedland, director of the Bureau
of Jewish Education of Cleveland, one of
our most brilliant Jewish educators, has
provided the answer to this question. In
a brief and interesting set of reasons he
declares that Hebrew should be taught
our children because—
It is our language.
It is a very poetic and beautiful language.
It is both, ancient and modern, and pos-
sesses the cultural qualities of both.
It is the language of our Bible and Mishna,
our prayers and hymns.
It possesses a vast literature covering many
ages and including many lands.
It is at present enjoying a golden age of
creativeness in poetry, fiction and philosophy.
A thousand men of letters are now employs,
ing it as their vehicle of expression in all do-
mains of literature and journalism.
It brings you in contact with the throbbing
life of re-awakening Palestine.
It is the only means of communication with
Jews all over the globe.
Many universities include it in their cur-
riculum.
There is an ever-present demand for rabbis,
teachers, librarians and social workers, who
know liebrew.
We are convinced that it is only the
minority that needs to be influenced by
these reasons. The rank and file in Jewry,
is, after all, so linked with the language
that it never was necessary to do mission-
ary work among them in behalf of their
own language. But the quoted 'reasons
should convert even the minority of die-
hards.
The Trade Council
The decision of the combined boaIds of
the Jewish Welfare Federation and the
Detroit Service Group at their recent meet-
ing to make a permanent organization of
the Trade Council, which functioned dur-
ing the last campaign, brings up for con-
iideration an important question. It will
be recalled that although the last cam-
paign was not scheduled to be held until
the month of May, initial activities for the
drive began as early as the preceding
January and plans were already being
outlined in December.
If this practice is to be repeated year
n and year out, then the community may
wirer in the sense that all activities will
he concentrated on fund-raising, to the
Detriment of everything else. It is hardly
t healthy symptom for a large and well-
organized community like Detroit to be
•ompelled to devote fully six months of
he calendar year towards fund-raising,
eaving only four months for free action
n behalf of everything else—the two eum-
ner months usually being excluded from
mportant community activities.
The Trade Council, while it is justified
n planning to function during the entire
rear, must be on guard not to monopo-
ize the time that the community
las at its disposal. If it does, it will prove
L boomerang. The wisdom of its leaders
3 challenged to make it an effective and
tnvenient instrument for 'service and not
a monopolizing campaign machine.
Liberty—as Viewed by Nazis
A most interesting and very pointed
editorial note appeared in a recent issue
of the New York Times under the heading
"Lectures on Liberty." We reprint it be-
cause it carries with it a lesson not only
for Nazis, but also for Soviet sympathizers
and those who, even in democratic coun-
tries, are too reluctant to defend our
American democratic institutions and are
inclined to take it for granted that demo-
cracy will survive without a battle. We
quote:
Democratic nations were lectured on liberty
by experts last week. At Goettingen, where
the final suppression of academic freedom is
being celebrated, Herr Rust, German Minister
of Education, warned the world that there
were demons lurking in liberty. Dr. Rust and
the Nazi police in their quaint way both agree
that these demons can best be expelled from
the body corporeal by the vigorous application
of rubber truncheons. In Washington Ambas-
sador Troyanovsky of the Soviet Republics.
elucidating the Russian witch hunt to the
American mind explained that the only way
to maintain liberty is by the ruthless sup-
pression of unassimilable elements. In Russia
the demons are expelled by the rifles of the
firing squad. That, of course, is a fairly defi.
site way of eradicating error. But it was an-
other revolutionist Mme. Roland, who re-
marked from the scaffold. "0 Liberty, what
crimes are committed in thy name!"
Prof. Horace M. Keen, speaking in
Detroit a short time ago under the aus-
pices of the local chapter of the American
Jewish Congress, very property warned
us that if we do not fight constantly for
liberty we may lose our freedom. We must
heed his warning.

PROPHECY COMES TRUE
In a letter to Maurice It Shoch-
att of the Baltimore Jewish Times
Larry Adler, famous harmonica
player and screen and stage enter-
tainer, recently wrote from Lon-
don: 'Your optimistic predictions
anent my journalism have come
true. Returning to England aboard
the Normandie, I received a cable
from the London Daily Express
requesting a 200-word story on the
Normandie's record-breaking trip.
Cabling the story immediately, I
arrived at Southampton the next
day; delightfully noticed that the
Express (with the world's largest
circulation of 2,900,000) had front-
paged my little story; had taste-
fully signed it not 'Larry Adler,
the mouth-organist,' but simply
'By Larry Adler.' And the Express
paid me $500 for the account, snak-
ing me a full-fledged journalist."

JERUSALEM. — (WNS-Palcor Agency) — Ex-
pressing amazement at the recommendations of the
Royal Commission's report, the executive of the
Jewish Agency for Palestine has issued a statement
calling upon the Jewish people to unite all their
forces "for the defense of our inalienable right to
our historic homeland and our national future in
Erstz Israel." Declaring that within a month the
supreme representative bodies of the Zionist Organ-
iation and the Jewish Agency will assemble for a
discussion of and a decision on the report, the Ex-
ecutive asserts that it must immediately challenge
the underlying assumption of the commission's re-
port that the Mandate is inherently unworkable.
The statement charges that the failure of the Pal-
estine government to provide for the security of
the country during the disturbances had reduced it
to a state of anarchy and led the commission to de-
cide upon the radical proposals contained in its re-
port.
The statement emphasizes that "a thorough study
of the long and complex document is required for a
considered opinion, which it is not possible to give
within a few hours," and notes that "never before
have we had a more sincere and fair-minded effort
to ascertain the facts in the situation," but points
out that the commission "found in Palestine a
breakdown of the administration resulting from a
state of complete insecurity of life and property."
Asserting that "more could have been achieved for
the benefit of both sections of the population had
the policy of the Mandate been faithfully imple-
mented and had the most elementary duty of any
goverment been carried out without fear or favor,"
the executive states that "it is because of that con-
viction that our movement is united in urging that
the Mandate be loyally and consistently applied."
Characterizing the palliatives suggested by the
commission, as well as the partition scheme, as in-
compatible with the Mandate, the statement de-
clares that "before they could be implemented the
Mandate would have to be changed by the League
of Nations and the problem of Palestine be recon-
sidered internationally. We therefore view with
amazement the way the government policy sweeps
away the principle of the absorptive capacity for
the regulation of Jewish immigration and fixes a
political maximum in violation of our rights and
past promises made by the most authoritative in-
terpretations repeatedly given by the government
and particularly by the White Paper of 1922 sub-
mitted to the League of Nations prior to the as-
signment of the Mandate to Great Britain. We enter
the strongest protest against such a distortion and
the application of the report. The report of the
Royal Commission comes at a time when for millions
of persecuted Jews Palestine represents the only
home for salvation."
Survivor Recalls Tragic Fate of
Christian Colonization Scheme
in Palestine in 1866
NEW YORK (WNS) — The tragic collapse of
a Palestinian colonization undertaking by 158
Christian men, women and children from the town
of Jonesport, Maine, in 1866, was recalled in an
interview with Arthur R. Rogers, 77-year-old, one
of the survivors, published in the New York Her-
ald Tribune. Mr. Rogers, who still lives in Jones.
port, said that the project was fathered by George
Adams, a former associate of Joseph Smith, foun-
der of Mormonism. When Smith and Adams quar-
reled, the latter settled in Jonesport, where he
told the people he was the founder of the Church
of th Messiah which was destined to colonize Pal-
estine. He then organized the Palestine Emigra-
tion Association with himself as president and
stirred the people of Jonesport to undertaking the
colonization of Palestine as their only chance of
salvation. The colonizers sold their homes and
property and turned the proceeds over to Adams.
The bark Nellie Chapin was chartered for the
voyage. Warren Wass, a Yankee skipper, was the
captain. After a 46-day journey the ship reached
Jaffa. The blazing heat, disease, Arab brigands,
lack of water and food, the failure of crops killed
half the colonists. After terrific hardships the
survivors were enabled to return to America
through funds raised by Moses S. Beach, former
owner of the New York Sun. A few stayed in
Palestine. Adams disappeared, but is said to
have been arrested in California for embezzlement.
Although Mr. Rogers hates to hear the name
of Adams, he still believes in the ides that in-
spired the ill-fated movement. The Herald-Trib-
une quotes him as follows: "Pastor Adams preach.
ed the reassembly of the Jews in Palestine, and in
that he was absolutely correct according to Bib-
lical prophecy. But our expedition was too much
ahead of the times to be successful. With Pales-
tine under British protection, Jews are flocking
back there from all parts of the world. The per-
secution of the Jews by Hitler is forecast in the
Bible, and we are nearing the end of Gentile
supremacy in the world. In other words. when
the Jews have nearly all returned to the Holy
Land they will set up a government that will rule
the world. The year 1939 marks the end of a
1,400-year cycle, and always at the end of such
cycles we have conflagration. With Hitler, Musso-
lini and other dictators in the saddle, and with
the entire globe on the verge of another war, we
are soon to witness the blasting and destruction of
all civilization. From that chaos the Jews of Pales.
estine will emerge the world rulers. It is prophe-
sied in the Bible—you can't get away from it."

Both in the United States and

rapidity with which these changes
are being effected has left con-

of even those who are residents

Two of the more important
fundamental rights concern the
right to leave Germany and the
transfer of property. The im-
pression is prevalent that it is
almost impossible to migrate
from Germany with the intention
of taking up a domicile else-
where. The great exodus from
Germany in the past three years
attests to the falsity of this wide-
spread impression. In fact, fre-
quently persons occupying posi-

clared their desires to encourage
the migration of Jews from Ger-
