Britain's Broken Pledge
Great Britain has broken her pledge to
the Jewish people.
The partition of Palestine means the re-
duction to an absurdity of the interna-
t tional assurances to the Jewish people for
the establishment of a Jewish National
Home in our ancient homeland.
Great Britain has been playing with
Jewish sentiments since the days of Sir
Herbert Samuel, who was recently elevat-
ed to a position in the House of Lords.
This man, who was once referred to as
"the modern Nehemiah," is now recog-
nized as the person who has leaned so
far backward that he has helped break
the back of an entire people.
It was during the administration of Vis-
count Samuel that Transjordania was torn
from Palestine. Now the skeletonized
homeland is being reduced further, and
'approximately one-third of the land east
of the Jordan is recommended by the
Royal Commission for inclusion in the so-
called Jewish state. No greater farce
could havh been perpetrated at the ex-
pense of a people whom the world has
not stopped crucifying.
If it were not at our expense, we might
laugh at the joke that is contained in the
Royal Commission's report. The only hope
for Jewry in the past decade, Palestine,
is now also being proscribed as a place of
refuge for the Jewish people. What is
worse, Palestine, held sacred by our peo-
ple for thousands of years, is now being
toyed with and Jewish sentiments are
being used as a mat for British boots.
Our major problem is to secure suffi-
cient territory for the settlement of large
numbers of Jews. Palestine being the only
acceptable place for Jews as Jews; Pales-
tine being the only place that was definite-
ly made available for the Jewish people,
all other avenues having been closed for
our wandering hordes— then the one
problem that remained for us was to se-
cure sufficient land for the settlement of
the millions who must be taken out of
Poland, Rumania and Germany; for the
thousands who desire to leave even demo-
cratic countries in order to settle in Eretz
Israel and to live a Jewish life that it to
be unmarred by the Galuth hindrances.
This last hope is now threatened, and the
Jewish people is faced with the serious
problem of preventing Britain's travesty
on justice.
It would be the height of folly on our
part to fail to admit that we are helpless
against the power of Great Britain. But
two means of appeal are still open to us.
The League of Nations is the power that
has entrusted the Mandate to Great Bra-
g ain, and the United States has an agree-
ment with the Mandatory Power with re-
lation to Palestine. The Zionist Organiza-
tion is obligated to direct its appeal to
these two powers, as well as to public
opinion. As a last resort we shall be com-
pelled once again to deal with the Arabs.
Perhaps there is a way out of the dilemma
by reaching the Arab masses through the
group of sane leaders who have been
battling the Grand Mufti and who have
consistently opposed the reign of terror.
In any event, the Jewish people stands
unalterably opposed to Palestine's divis-
ion and to Britain's toying with our sacred
rights.
Lady Astor on Anti-Nazism
Lady Astor, member of the British
Parliament, on the eve of her recent re-
turn to England after a visit in this coun-
try, expressed alarm at what she termed
the "positive danger" of excessive anti-
German propaganda in the United States.
"If the Jews are behind it," she said, "they
are going too far, and they need to take
heed." To prove that she is objective in
her view of anti-German propagandists,
Lady Astor emphasized that she herself is
"not at all pro-German," and further
stated: "I am a pro-Jew and have always
been a Zionist, but anyone who reads the
papers can see what is coming: it will
react against them. And I tell all my Jew-
ish friends the same thing. I am against
communism, which may also be partly
responsible for this sentiment. Commun-
ism is the most horrible thing in the world
today. I hate all dictators and it is ap-
palling to see this propaganda playing
into their hands."
• In the last sentence will be detected
Lady Astor's inconsistency. If she hates
all dictators, why make an exception of
the Nazi ruler? Besides. she apparently
failed to notice during her stay in this
country that there is as much feeling
against the communists as there is against
the fascists. She also falls into the com-
mon error of singling out the Jews for
special mention in referring to those whom
she believes to be erring in their propa-
yanda against certain foreign powers. We
are confident that a more careful study of
the situation would convince Lady Astor
that she was not justified in her severe
criticism of the anti-Nazi forces in this
country-
A Turning Point in Zionism
The 40th annual convention of the
Zionist Organization' of America marked
a turning point in the Jewish National
movement in this country. Under the
leadership of Dr. Stephen S. Wise, who is
today the most dynamic force in American
Jewish life, the organization's prestige is
raised considerably. The World Zionist
Organization has realized that without
the influence of American Jewry the move-
ment suffers. Also, it is now definitely
established that the force of public opin-
ion from this country will go a long way
in assuring that the pledges made to the
Jewish people in the Balfour Declaration
and the Mandate of the League of Na-
tions will be honored.
A most significant statement was re-
ceived from the State Department by the
chairman of the Detroit chapter of the
American Jewish Congress. "You may be
assured," an important spokesman for the
department wrote, "that this government
is constantly giving appropriate attention
to all phases of the situation with regard
to Palestine and is aware of the interest
of Jewish circles in the United States in
matters relating to that country."
Here is excellent proof that very com-
forting action can be expected from our
government at Washington in support of
Jewish claims to Palestine. A strong ad-
ministration at the head of the Zionist
Organization of America is the only guar-
antee that such action will be forthcoming.
Dr. Wise is rendering invaluable serv-
ice to the cause of the Jewish people by
pressing for friendly action on the part
of the United States Government. Fur-
thermore, his dynamic personality is cer-
tain to prove an influence in securing
Great Britain's adherence to the Mandate.
May he be granted the strength to carry
on his sacred work during these trying
times in our history.
Colonel Josiah Wedgwood
Col. Josiah Wedgwood is now engaged
in an effort to mobilize public opinion in
behalf of sorely-treated Polish Jewry.
Not limiting himself to the difficult task
of constantly and consistently defending
the Jewish position in Palestine, Col.
Wedgwood always places himself in the
front ranks of the most sincere friends we
have in the world.
Without Col. Wedgwood our efforts in
behalf of Palestine's redemption would be
made even more difficult than they are. He
is constantly on guard lest the Jewish
position should be weakened and the
promises made us whittled down. Now
he is again a leader in another important
cause—the effort to make the lot of 3,-
000,000 Jews in Poland a little easier.
Col. Wedgwood is one of the best friends
we have. His record compares with the
most devoted non-Jewish defenders of
Jewish rights.
His name is already written indelibly
in Jewish history.
Fighting the Rise of Bigotry
Mrs. Vera Michles Dean, editor of
Foreign Policy Bulletin of the Foreign Pol-
icy Association, writing in the recent issue
of the Bulletin, asks the question "Can
Democracy hold its own?" Mrs. Dean
writes in answer to this question: ,
The democracies have no business meddling
with the internal affairs of dictatorial coun-
tries. . . But the moment a dictatorship over-
steps its national boundaries and seeks to con-
vert other peoples by force to the faith it
professes, then the democracies, by supine
acquiescence, run the risk of committing sui-
cide for the sake of winning a temporary
reprieve from conflict. The democracies
should neglect no opportunity to negotiate
with the dictatorships on the basis of a con-
structive political and economic program call-
ing for adjustments on both aides—but not
wait for the dictatorships to lay down the
terms or block the progress of international
negotiations. To demand peace at any price
—even if the price involves destruction of the
values created by Western civilization in the
past—is a dangerous form of defeatism. It
is an admission that nothing is worth a
struggle on the democratic aide, and encour-
ages the worst excesses of dictatorships.
The "peace at any price" doctrine is based
on th assumption that by displaying the slight-
est sign of resistance the democracies will in-
evitably provoke war. Obviously, the danger
of war is ever present in a world armed to
the teeth, where not only bodies but minds
are daily schooled in military drill. But there
is no reason to assume that clearly defined
opposition to the bellicose gestures and irre-
sponsible threats characteristic of dictator-
ships will bring on war more readily than un-
questioning acceptance of any terms the dic-
tatorships may impose. Sooner or later the
democracies will find it necessary to make a
last stand against the wave of political fanat-
icism sweeping Europe. Is It not better to
make this stand today, when it may still serve
as a deterrent to aggression, than when one
concession after another has been granted to
the dictatorships in the hope of inducing them
to keep the peace? Difficult as it is to reach
a decision which may make or mar the future
of Europe; the Western democracies cannot
indefinitely pursue their soliloquy on the
theme "to be or not to be" if they are to
avoid the danger of finding that the dicta-
torships have already taken the decision out of
their hands.

BELATED HONEYMOON FOR
THELMA LEEDS AND
PARKYAKARKAS
Beautiful brown-eyed T helma
Leeds and her recently acquired
husband, Harry (Parkyakarkas)
Einstein, are planning a belated
honeymoon trip to Europe, pro-
vided RK0 will give them a leave
of absence this summer. They want
to leave in July on an eight-week
tour of the continent.
The Einsteins have just pur-
chased a five-acre tract in the En-
cino district of Southern Califor-
nia's lovely San Francisco Valley,
where they plan to build a country
estate upon their return from
abroad.
Thelma Leeds is a native of New
York City, and as long as she can
remember has had an almost in-
satiable desire for music. She has
had an eventful career, but with
her new film contract her real
career is just beginning. At the age
of six she began taking piano les-
sons, and continued until her sec-
ond-last year in high school. She
was active as an accompanist for
school recitals and other affairs,
and it was a school operetta that
changed her whole course. A boy
who was playing the male lead in
the operetta became sicksthe day
before final rehearsal, and it was
impossible to get any one to take
his place. Thelma had been play-
ing for rehearsals and, being
familiar with the arias, offered to
substitute for him. Her offer was
accepted. Her voice was a lyric
soprano, but the incongruity of
the thing went unnoticed at the
performance. She stole the show,
and since then has devoted all her
time to voice study.
She studied at Hunter College in
New York for two years and left
to concentrate on her voice when
Columbia Broadcasting S y a t e m
gave her a contract. She was only
17 at the time, the youngest singer
under contract. She was able to
lower her voice to a contralto, and
became one of the most sought-
after singers in radio. She was on
several radio hours, played a sea-
son with the New York Light
Opera Company, and appeared at
theaters and night clubs in New
York and other large cities. It
was at a night club that S. J.
Briskin, RK0 production chief,
saw her, and was so impressed by
her beautiful voice and appearance
that he asked her to make a screen
test in Hollywood. The test was a
success, and she is now under con-
tract to Mr. Briskin's studio.
HOLLYWOOD NEWS BRIEFS
We are informed that Maxie
Rosenbloom is so serious about his
career in motion pictures that he
turned down a $5000 fight in De-
troit to take a role in Selznick's
"Nothing Sacred." Ile has appear-
ed in several films. Now, however,
he is cast for acting ability and
not for a boxing scene. The screen
play in which he is to appear was
written by Ben Hecht, and Maxie
has the role of a circulation de-
partment muscle-man on a New
York newspaper.
Samuel Goldwyn has signed
Archie Mayo, for many years dl-
rector of outstanding box-office
film hits, to a long-term contract.
For the past 11 years Mayo has
been directing pictures for Warner
Brothers.
The Rev. Dr. John R.' Hart, associate minister
of St. Stephen's Protestant Episcopal Church of
Philadelphia, has formed a new organization which
will be known by the cute name of "Anti-Moth
Ball Society." The purpose of this group, he ex-
plains, will be to oppose the suspension of church
activities during the summer and the putting of
houses of worship in moth balls during the hot
months. Dr. Hart hopes to reawaken ,interest
in religious affairs through this society. Ile be-
lieves the movement might spread to other cities
and he says: "of course there are no denomina-
tional lines and we expect Catholic and Jewish re.
inforcements."
What we especially like about Dr. Hart's idea
is the name. Seeing that we do not have enough
organizations, the best reason for forming a new
one is a good name. Think of it: "The Anti-Moth
Ball Society!" It should prove as popular as
Anti-Spinach, Anti-Castor Oil. Anti-This and Anti.
That. It should be conducive to effective ex-
patision programs, such as forming Ladies' Auxil-
iaries, Supplementary Sisterhoods, Junior Auxil-
lades, Young People's and Junior Young Peo-
ple's branches, and even South Side, South-West
and North-East sub-districts. It is a good way
of solving the inter-denominational problem of the
lack of organizations in our American commu-
nities,
We are tempted to start a branch of the Anti-
Moth Ball Society in Detroit.
But on second thought we fear the power of
competition from what may prove an even more
popular name: The Anti-Anti-Everything Society.
If we must anti- anything, we'll anti- everything.
And we shall have all the necessary branches, in-
cluding groups for every geographical location.
Three cheers for the Anti-Anti- movement!

The Paper Wall
An old legend of pre-Balfour Declaration days
predicted the arrival of the Messiah on a white
horse. The legend spoke of the return of the
Jews to Palestine under the leadership of this
Messiah on horseback,' and it mapped the road
to Eretz Israel over a paper bridge.
Instead of a paper bridge, Great Britain is now
building a paper wall. This is all that partition
can possibly mean. A divided Palestine is no
guarantee of safety for anyone. A firm stand by
the British would have solved the problem more
quickly and more easily. ,It would have enhanced
the British position. Under present circumstances
England's position is weakened. The Royal Com-
mission's report means that the British Empire has
yielded to vandalism and to barbarism. It con-
dones murder, and yet believes that the creation
of a corridor will help matters. The Polish Cor-
ridor which divides Germany and exists as a con-
stant threat to both Poland and Germany is the
best proof of the stupidity of a political program
which would create another corridor.
•
The Solomon Legend
The ancient legend about King Solomon also
has a place in the current Palestinian issue. Brit-
ain is evidently playing the wise ruler by offering
to partition Palestine. King Solomon of old was
much wiser. He knew that the true mother would
not permit the child to be cut in two parts. The
Jewish people is the true mother in the instance
of Eretz ,Israel, and the needs of our people de-
mand that the country remain intact. The Arabs
have little at stake. Palestine is a mere flyspeck
on the map compared with the vast possessions
of the Arabs. But irresponsible Arab chieftains
may insist on carrying on a policy of destruction
and brutality. Arabs were never concerned with
the well-being of Palestine. While Jews made the
land fruitful, Arabs uprooted trees and destroyed
plantations. Such vandalism should never have been
condoned. Great Britain could have stopped it.
It did not. It is not stopping it with partition.
It is merely encouraging destruction.
•
Jewish Spirit Undeatroyed
But the Jewish spirit will not be destroyed. We
shall continue to build colonies. Only last week
the Orthodox Zionists—the Mizrachists—establish•
ed • new colony in the Beisan district In memory
of Rabbi Zvi K•Ifitcher, one of the founders of
the Misrachi movement. We shall plant forest..
We shall settle large numbers of Jews in Pales•
tine. A sacred trust with which this generation
is charged in Palestine will not be abandoned by
the mere &wars of a mighty power. Many centuries
ago the power of Rome was pitted against that of
Judea. Today Judea lives, but Rome of old is
dead.
•
5,000,000 Hostages
There are many people who today speak in
terms of 400,000 Jewish hostages in Palestine
who must be protected. There are no hostages in
Palestine, but a free community that will battle
for its rights. But there are hostages. There are
5,000,000 of them in Eastern Europe who clamor
for the opportunity and privilege to settle in Pales-
tine. These hostages need territory. Partition of
Palestine means that these millions are robbed of
the soil they would populate. Therefore the battle
is on to a finish. The Zionist cause will not be
defeated so easily. Ten years from now the
world will continue to marvel at the determina-
tion with which Jews throughout the world insist
upon solving their national problem by means of
self-help, through self-emancipation—by establish-
ing a center for themselves against great odds—
even in spite of interference by the world's great-
est powers.

The Palestine partition plan proves definitely
and decisively that we have been too slow in our
efforts. We have not redeemed sufficient land in
Palestine. Had both private owners and the Jew-
ish National Fund redeemed not 6 per cent of
cultivatable land but 60 per cent, that territory
would have been included in the proposed Jewish
state. The Jewish rich have failed the Jewish
people. The Jewish people, in turn, sold honors
too cheaply and offered glory to the wealthy in
return for a mess of pottage.
Scathing Rebuke to Anti-Semites

Our American tradition re-
quires freedom, of discussion,
freedom of speech and press.
In the long run, I think this
freedom is certainly justified
by her children. If freedom
be denied, and the mass of
people'are fed with propaganda
and lies and hate and fear,
they may presently be led to
slaughter. Let freedom be
denied and you have eventu-
ally, a reign of terror such as
they have today in Russia,
Italy and Germany.
We Americans do not be-
lieve that you can promote the
national welfare if you keep
the people in ignorance and
give them distorted versions of
facts; and if you are not ex-
pected to voice your opinion—
or even to have an opinion—
you 'are soon able to believe
what you are told, and blind-
ly do what you are bidden.
We are committed to the idea
of democracy. The powers of
government rest upon the con-
sent of the governed and there-
fore the people should be given
the facts as regards current
happenings in any part of the
world; and they should be per-
mitted freely to discuss these
facts.
FREEDOM OF DISCUSSION
ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY
Freedom of discussion is
absolutely necessary in • de-
mocracy, and it is this particu-
lar freedom that J am discuss-
