May 21, 1937 Sivan 11, 5697 Our Community Structure Something is wrong with our commu- nity set-up. The 1937 Allied Jewish Cam- paign proves it. There is no denying the truth that the few who work are sincerely devoted to the causes they campaign for. In fact, the volunteers are so devoted and self-sacri- ficing that their loyalty is to be marvelled at in the face of apparent failure. But the average worker has a sad tale to tell. The job of getting funds for im- portant Jewish causes deity becomes more and more difficult. It is a terrific struggle which reveals that far too many are un- concerned over the fate of their people and would gladly shirk responsibility if they could gracefully step out of the role as par- ticipants in community affairs. It is a tragic but true fact that only a handful of people are giving within their means. Some are influenced to give by methods of ballyhoo; others find them- selves in compromising positions and are compelled to give for the sake of friend- ships and their standing in the community. But only the handful of loyalists contribute because they know their responsibility as Jews; because they have been educated to value highly their place in the Jewish community. Apparently the community's structure needs some renovating. More should work for Jewish causes; more should contribute towards their support; more among those who do contribute should give more liber- ally. How is this to be accomplished? Per- haps the solution lies in a negative atti- tude. It is possible that we ought to begin by scrapping some of our old methods of campaigning and by introducing new ones. If some people find it possible to compro- mise with conscience and to refuse to give this year as much as they did last year— simply because they were interested in a home for old people last year and find no such appeal in this year's drive—then the time has arrived for a re-evaluation of our community standing. It is clear that we need new educational methods in order to enlist the interest and co-operation of Detroit Jewry. Such in- terest is at present limited, and it must be stimulated among the indifferent. We are impressed by an interesting let- ter which was addressed to prospective contributors to the Pittsburgh United Jew- ish Fund by Gustave H. Kann, the chair- man of this year's drive. In his letter Mr. Kann stated: I am calling your attention to the campaign in this personal way be- cause there will be no spectacular "ballyhoo." The daily newspapers will • not be asked to give us any publicity. We do not want this kind of advertis- ing because we sincerely believe—as I am sure you must—that this is one matter we Jews must take care of among ourselves. European anti-Semitism, the up- building of a Jewish homeland in Pal- estine and the needs of certain strict- ly Jewish institutions are personal matters to you and to me and to every Jew. We must do this job ourselves. And, with your help and the help of all our fellow Jews in Pittsburgh, I am confident we will have a campaign that will be a source of pride to all of us. TALMUDIC TALES By DAVID MORANTZ Palestine Immigration Schedule Ha-Aretz, Jerusalem daily, calls the al- lottment of 770 labor certificates for Jew- ish settlers in Palestine for the next four months an "insult to Jewry." This criticism of Great Britain is more than justified. A comparison of previous labor visa schedules will give an inkling of the ridiculousness of the latest allott- ment. The new schedule grants 192 cer- tificates a month, whereas under the last inadequate schedule 250 were permitted to enter each month. From April to October, 1935, the number admitted monthly was 1,334; from October, 1935, to April, 1936, 540 a month, and from April to October, 1936, 667 a month. Taking into consideration the fact that schOol children have to be taken from their classes during harvest seasons to assist the Jewish farmers, and in view of the fact that the so-called absorptive capacity prin- ciple is being abused by completely ig- noring the shortage of labor in Palestine, Great Britain, and especially the adminis- tration In Palestine, is guilty of harming Jewish efforts rather than facilitating in the upbuilding of the homeland. If the new labor schedule is an indica- tion of what is to be expected from the Royal Commission, then we may be pre- pared for a battle against impending un- fair legislation in Palestine. A Weizmann Yarn Based upon the ancient legende and philosophy found in the Talmud sad folklore of the Jewish people. WOMAN While engaged in a spirited dis- cussion with Rabbi Gamaliel, Em- peror Hadrian, intending to cast ridicule upon the Bible, declared: "Why, your God is represented In your Bible as a thief, who stealthily came to Adam In his sleep and robbed him of one of his ribs." Gamaliel's daughter, who was present, quick witted damsel that she was, having heard the Em- peror's statement exclaimed: "Your majesty, a grave outrage has been perperated upon our house! A prowling thief broke into our home and carried away a sil- ver flagon from our chest of plate and left a golden one in its place." "Well," cried Emperor Hadrian, "what a welcome thief, indeed! Would that such a robber might break into my palace." "Indeed," replied the blushing maiden, "was not our Creator, whom you have just reproached, just such a thief?" "flow so?" asked the Emperor. "Even though he deprived Adam of a rib," said she, "did he not in its place give him a lovely, loving bride?" Says the Talmud further on the subject of woman: "A woman prefers poverty with the affection of her husband to riches without it." "Woman has better instinct in gauging the character of a stranger than a man." "A man should be careful lest he cause a woman to weep for God counts their tears." "Who is rich? He who has a good wife." May 21, 1937 FREEDOM IN THE DARK There Still Are Germans Who Believe in Liberty By DOROTHY THOMPSON EDITOR'S NOTE! The distinguished author and foreign correspondent, who is in the fore- front of the activities of the American Committee for Christian German Refugees, dedicates this contribution to a most in t tint phenomeno n in Nazi Germany. In private life Miss Thompson is Mrs. Sinclair Lewis. (Copyright, 1937, Seven Arts Feature Syndicate) I am taking my text from the works of Friedrich Schiller, for a very interesting and dramatic thing is happening in Germany right now in connection with the production of one of Schillei's plays. For years, for generations, for over a hundred years, the plays of Fried- rich Schiller have been an important part of the literature of the German theater, and an earlier play of his, "Don Carlos," has always been a favorite of German students. It is a very well- known play written in blank verse, which seems a little turgid sometimes. Well, something has happened in Germany: An amazing demonstration at a performance of "Don Carlos" that seems to bear an unmistak- able significance. A few weeks ago in Berlin a new production of "Don Carlos" was put on, and the "Minister of Enlightenment," Mr. Goeb- bels, sat in the loge of the theater crowded with its first night audience. Suddenly there came a moment in this long, turgid classic and melodrama when the entire audience rose and burst into cyclonic applause. Perhaps you read about it in the newspaper. It is some years since I read "Don Carlos" (I read it in college); and it occurred to me to find out what the passage was that had evoked such a spontaneous out- burst of applause by people in a theater in a land under the domination of a Hitler. Bereft of the new Christian industry, Granada lies forsaken, and all Europe exulting sees his foe oppressed with wounds by its own hands inflicted." Then he steps nearer the king and says: "You would plan for all eternity, and yet the seeds you sow are the seeds of death! This hope- less task with nature's laws at strife will ne'er survive the spirit of its founder. You labor for gratitude; in vain with nature you engage in desperate struggle; in vain you waste your high royal life in projects of destruction. Man is treater than you esteem him. 'Ile will burst the chains of a long slumber and reclaim once more his just and hallowed rights. With Nero's name and fell Busiris will he couple yours . ..." And he turns to the king and adds, earnestly: "By the Almighty power! Restore us all you have de- prived us of and, generous as strong, let happi- ness flow from your horn of plenty—let man's mind ripen in your vast empire. Give us back all you have taken from us and become, amidst a thousand kings, a king indeed!" Pose gazes at the king and continues, with enthusiasm: "0 that the eloquence of all these myriads whose fate depends on this momentous hour could hover on my lips and fan the spark that lights thine eyes into a glorious flame! Re- nounce the mimicry of godlike powers which level us to nothing. Be, in truth, an image of the Diety himself! Never did mortal man possess so much for purpose so divine. The kings of Eur- ope pay homage to the name of Spain. Be you the leader of these kings. One pen stroke now, cne motion of your hand can new create the earth! Grant us liberty of thought!" The main idea of "Don Carlos" is this: The scene is laid in the time of the Renaissance; Eliza- beth is on the throne in England, and all Europe is beginning to flame with the Renaissance; Shakespeare is writing great new nationalistic A Real Struggle in World Today dramas, breathing not a spirit of mysticism and In Hitler's Germany today, in that land narrow nationalism, but bringing new concepts of where there is no freedom of thought, no free- freedom and liberty. She was built to use helium, not hydrogen, and the Hindenburg's builder, Dr. Eckener. was assured that the United States' ban on the export of helium would not interfere with the sale of the gas for the German airship ... But when the Nazis be- gan to cut down on all exports and to restrict foreign exchange deals, they were unable to pay for American helium and had to use the highly inflammable hydrogen. Wonder what the Nazi survivors of the Hindenburg thought about being treated by Drs. Segal, Gold- stein and Toiben, all non-Aryans. It was the late Maximilian Harden, German-Jewish journalist and publisher of Die Zukunft, who was one of the few men who al- ways warned against pinning ex- aggerated hopes on the value of lighter-than-air craft for pas- senger transportation . .
