tion Bnai David will conduct an
intensive membership campaign.
Congregation Bnai David is
located on Elmhurst and Four-
teenth and possesses one of the
most attractive synagogues in the
community. Besides the usual daily
and Sabbath services, Congrega-
tion Bnai David carries on a wide
cultural and educational program.
During the winter season, Friday
night lectures and gatherings take

The body of Mr. Schlissel, who
died Sunday of a heart attack in
Los Angeles, was brought to De-
troit Thursday where funeral serv-
ices were conducted on Friday,
May 7, by Rabbi A. M. Hershman.
Burial was in Clover Hill Ceme-
tery.
Mr. Schlissel was born 72 years
ago in Austria and came to the
United States 40 years ago. He
lived in Detroit for a number of
years before he left in 1921 to
make his home in California. He
leaves three sons, Charles I.
Schlissel and Myron A. Keys, at-
torneys in Detroit, and A. James
Keys, of Pasadena, Calif.

Twelfth Street Mothers' Club

tal by the Business and Profes-
sional Women's Division continues
steadily. The division has a unique

Thursday, May 13
A special meeting of the Jewish
Women's European Welfare Or-
ganization was held Monday, May
3, at Congregation Bnai Moshe.
Letters were read from the
European orphans. Checks were
sent' out for the regular orphan
cases, and four checks of $5 each
were mailed as temporary relief
to new cases.
The society also paid room rent
for orphans brought over by this
organization to Detroit and room
rent for an orphan student in a
Hebrew college.
It was decided to pay for a
steamship ticket of a widow in
Poland which will take her to
Cuba where she will rejoin her
son.
Arrangements were made for
the Shevuoth bake gale on Thurs-
day, May 13, at the Detroit Jewish
meat markets, the proceeds to go
for relief of European orphans.
A special board meeting is called
for Monday, May 10, at the resi-
dence of Mrs. I. Israel, vice-presi-
dent of the organization, 1675

The Agudath Herzl Young
Judeans held their annual Lag of
Omer picnic Sunday, May 2, at
Palmer Park. The Carmel Hebrew
Schools also took part in this pic-
nic. Winners of events were:

Gladys Lawton; broad jump,
Manuel Sklar; 60-yard dash, Mil-
ton Lucow; Monty Frankel, best
ball player; Milton Medintz held
out the longest in a contest on
historical Hebrew names. A spe-
cial prize was given to Eisemen

b'Omer,
Over 150 children and many
parents attended the picnic. I. A.
Lawton, principal of the Carmel
Hebrew Schools and organizer of
the club presented the children
with their prizes.
Kaufmann, leader in Jewish club
activities, and the mother of Oscar
A. Kaufmann, attorney and former
assistant corporation counsel, were
held Tuesday. Burial was in Clover
Hill Park Cemetery. Mrs. Kauf-
mann was born in Detroit 68 years
ago, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Moses Edloff, who came here af-
ter their marriage in Syracuse,
N. Y., and lived here for 50 years.
A member of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek, Mrs. Kaufmann
was the first president of its
Ladies' Auxiliary. At the time of
her death, she belonged also to
Hadassah, Shaarey Zedek Sister-
hood and the National Council of
Jewish Women. She died Sunday
at her home, 1536 Glynn Court,
and leaves her husband, Sol Kauf-
mann, and her son, Oscar A.
Wife of Hotel Owner Is
Dead; Mrs. Max Elkin
Dies in Detroit Hospital
Mrs. Hilda C. Elkin, wife of
Max Elkin of the Colonial Hotel,
Mount Clemens, Mich., died Tues-
day night, April 27, in the Jen-
ning's Hospital, Detroit, following
complications after two major
operations. She was 34 years of
age.
Mrs. Elkin, a well known and
highly respected resident of the
Mount Clemens community, was
an active member of the local syna-
gogue, and the B. T. M. Sisterhood
of the synagogue. She was a na-
tive of Cleveland, the daughter of
Mrs. C. a Levy, of that city, who
survives her. Mr. and Mrs. Elkin
were married in Mount Clemens,
and had lived there almost con-
tinuously throughout their married
life.
Besides her husband, Max, the
deceased Ia survived by a son,
Elliott, cadet of Howe Military
School, Howe, Ind.; two brothers
and five sisters. The father,
Charles D. Levy. of Cleveland.
died suddenly in Mt. Clemens
while on a visit there Dec. 28,
1936.
The funeral and burial took
place on Thursday at 3 p. m. with
services at the Woodmere Ceme-
tery Chapel, Detroit. Rabbi Leon

MAX GROSSMAN
Funeral services for Max Gross-
man, former detective-lieutenant,
who died early Sunday in Wom-
an's Hospital after an illness of
several weeks, were held at 2 p.
m. Tuesday. Burial was in Clover
Hill Cemetery. Mr. Grossman,
whose home was at 2752 Boston
Blvd. W., was born in Cincinnati,
0., 58 years ago. He was ap-
pointed patrolman on the De-
troit police force in 1899 and for
23 years served as patrolman.

signing from the department, he
operated the Federal Salvage &
Sales, Inc., and for a short time
was manager of an army store.
At the time of his death he was
a broker of baker's equipment.

and Bunny Grossman; three
brothers, Detective-Sergt. Louis
Grossman, Fred and Joseph Gross-
man, and two sisters, Mrs. Ben
Harris and Mrs. Rose Friedman,
all of Detroit.

were held on May 6 with inter-
ment in Bnai David Cemetery,

She is survived by her husband,

Mrs. Betty Prady; five sons. Cole-
man S., Joseph, Fred, Edward and
Harold; two sisters, Mrs. J. Aber-
blatt and Mrs. M. Ferbank of
Dorchester, Mass., and a brother,
Sam Zaft of Russia. Mrs. Berick
was a member of the Progressive
Ladies Unterstatzung Verein, Wo-
