THE LEGAL CHRONICLE.

A REALISTIC NOVEL OF LIFE OF A
GROUP OF YOUNG CHICAGO JEWS

PAGE (CONCLUDED from EDITORIAL PAGE)

Thus your happy childhood and my
youth
Were locked in sweet embrace;
Round my heart your arm en-
twined
With tender limb and beaming
face.

And now, those vivid years have
flown,
Like my own life to me thou art;
With past and present wound in
one
To make a garland for the heart.

And though my eyes with dew
now fill
Because thy baby days have
passed;
I'll hold to the tender dreams of
thee
And cherish the memories to my
last.

When God summoned you my life
to bless,
From vintage , the past bath

While I sipped from this Heavenly

The hours silently crept to rest.

experiences of the actors in his
story. The places toured include
France, Palestine, Russia, Greece
—in addition to the principal cen-
ter of his characters' activities:
Chicago.

Commencing with the early
youth of his characters, he de-
scribes their ambitions and the
aspirations of their parents. Two
of the group became physicians.
Among the two who became lawyers
is an idealistic young man who
devoted himself sincerely and
seriously to defending labor cases
for the Civil Liberties Union. An-
other of the lawyers devoted him-
self to criminal-law. A third, who
never passed the bar, became a
process chaser, ended by bum-
ming his way to the coast and
being brought back to his home
after a serious illness contracted
from sleeping in parks.

There is the sculptor who went
to Palestine and to France and
returned for a life of struggle in
Chicago. The author himself has
been compared to this character
because his outlook on life com-
pares with that of the novelist.
Similarly burying are the activ-
i ties of the girls in the story.
There are the idealists and the
fly-by-night types.
There are the Zionists — the
l ladassah workers among the girls
—and the Communist sympathiz-
ers.
"The Old Bunch" is a panorama
of life. It is excellent chronicling
of events, and is a tribute to the
efforts of the author who is said
to have spent several years look-
ing through all editions of all Chi-
cago newspapers for his material
for this story.
The author's wife—a chemist—
is responsible for the chemical and
medical terms in this unusual
story.

ANTI-SEMITISM IS
MADE AN OFFICIAL
POLICY IN POLAND

(CONCLUDED FROM PAGE ONE)

Half of the proposed fund would
be raised by a voluntary tax of
200 zlotys on each of the 35,000
Jewish storekeepers who have thus
far escaped the affects of the boy-
cott. The other half is expected
to be obtained from Jews in other
countries.

The conference listened to de-
tailed reports of the picketing of
Jewish shops and the publication
of the names of all non-Jews
patronizing such establishments.
The most serious threat to the
Jews in retail trade, it was pointed
out, are the stores opened by the
new society. Subsidized by cer-
tain banks and with the tacit sup-
port of the government, the so-
ciety has published a list of all
non-Jewish business establish-
ments! in the larger cities. In War-
saw the list is broken down Into
sections street by street and thou-
sands of circulars have been dis-
tributed urging the public to buy
only from non-Jews. In many in-
stances these new stores are
owned by the wives of government
officials.
