Jews of Detroit-Do Your Duty r Testing Time for Detroit Jewry.

MAY NEED EMERGENCY
FUND TO AID LODGES

By DR. A. M. HERSHMAN

By DR. LEO M. FRANKLIN

The 1937 Jewish Welfare Campaign is on!
It is the bounden duty of every member of the
community to contribute his or her full share to-
wards it.
The plight of our people abroad beggars de-
scription. Polish and German Jewries are drown-
ing in an ocean of calamities. They ask us to
throw them a life-line so that they may not sink.
We dare not shut our ears to their cry. To us,
to every one of us, is addressed the call: "De.
liver them that are drawn unto death. And for-
bear thou not to save those that are ready to be
slain."
Palestine is appealing to us. The eyes of
tens of thousands of our people are turned long-
ingly to it. Their hope is focused upon it. Pal-
estine is their Land of Promise—it is our Land
of Promise "For our people and the cities of our
God" is the stirring call Palestine addresses to
us. We most answer the call.
Our local institutions depend for the con-
tinuance and progress of their work upon the
success of the campaign now launched. They will
languish unless the goal be reached. Failure to
raise the quota of $385,000 will spell moral fail-
ure, spiritual remissness.
Let every one give in proportion to his
means and to the magnitude of the emergency.
Detroit Jewry—do your duty,

This is a testing time for the Jews of Detroit.
Every Jewish man, woman and child in our com-
munity is on trial. Now it shall be known
whether his sympathy for suffering is genuine or
only an affectation on his part. Now it will be
shown whether the tears he has shed for his suf-
fering brethren abroad, because of their pitiful
plight in Germany, Poland, Rumania and else-
where, have been crocodile tears or whether they
have sprung from an aching heart. Now it will
become manifest whether our co-religionists who
have urged their brethren in faith to contribute
to the rebuilding of Palestine are themselves so
genuinely interested in this project as to set the
example that they should give the inspiration
that is needed to others for the support of a
high and holy cause. Now we will know whether
the support of the aged and the orphan and the
indigent really means something to the Jews
of this community, or whether philanthropy and
education and religion, of which many speak loud
and long, are only empty words upon their lips.
All these things will be manifest by the re-
sponse that i3 made by the Jews of this commu-
nity to the appeal of the Allied Jewish Campaign
and the success of the workers in reaching the
minimum goal of $385,000 that has been set.
If we are really in earnest in our desire to
maintain our local philanthropic and educational
institutions; if we are wholeheartedly concerned
with the fate of the aged and the orphan and the
sick among our people; if our hate of Hitler goes
deep enough for us to want to help the victims of
his madness; if we are sufficiently touched by the
latest anti-Jewish uprising in Poland; if we want
to rebuild Palestine both as a haven of refuge
for the oppressed and as a center of Jewish cul-
ture; if we want to do any or all of these things,
because as Jews we sense our duties to our fel-
low Jews, then we shall give ear to the appeal
that is addressed to us in behalf of these causes,.
and we shall give, not to use the outworn and
misleading phrase "until it hurts," but we shall
give gladly, generously, promptly until to us
shall come the supreme joy that inheres In the
knowledge that we have done our duty.
Yes, our Jewish community is on trial. God
grant that the verdict to be rendered shall be one
of which no Jew shall be ashamed.
