Rabbi Leon Frarn was one of
the speakers at the International
Day program of the Michigan
Exposition at noon on Monday.
Introduced by James Vernor,
Rabbi Fram said, "I am glad to
meet with Mr. Vernor again. The
last time I saw him, it was when
we participated in the conference
called by Governor Frank Mur-
phy to consider ways and means
of meeting the emergency of the
strike wave. That was an epoch-
making meeting. We decided then
to solve our labor problems not in
the fascist way of violence and
bloodshed but by the civilized,
democratic way of negotiation and
conciliation.
"It is appropriate that we should
meet again or. International Day
at the Michigan Exposition, for
in world affairs, too, we are
faced with the choice of settling
out differences by the methods of
war or by the methods of nego-
tiation and co-operation.
"There are nations in the
world today, definitely planning
to make war. There are nations
in the world today, who are now
attacking helpless peoples, who
are invading the soil of other
countries. There is a nation in
the world today, which persecutes
its own citizens and, not content
with that, seeks to spread hatred
and the spirit of persecution into
all other countries.
"It is, therefore, necessary for
all nations who still love freedom
and democracy to come together
to resist the militarists. the dic-
tatorships, the war makers.
"For this purpose, we need In-
ternational Days.
"I welcome this institution,
then, in the name of the Jewish
faith. I know my brethren of
the Christian faith welcome the
idea also. The spirit of interna-
tional friendship is congenial to
all who love their fellow-men."

new bungalows have been built to
accommodate the increased camp
population.
Mrs. Avrunin stated this week
that the camp will this year be
conducted for boys and girls of
the ages of 6 to 12, and that the
nursery will care for children of

Roosevelt Pledges
Religious Liberty
NEW YORK (WNS)—Preserv-
ation of religious liberty in the
United States was pledged by
President Roosevelt in a message
addressed to the Calvert Associ-
ates and The Commonweal which
celebrated the 303rd anniversary
of the founding of Maryland and
Maryland's role in the establish-
ment of religious freedom with a
high mass at St. Patrick's Cathed-
ral. The text of the President's
message follows: "The lesson of
religious toleration — a toleration
which recognizes complete liberty
of human thought, liberty of hu-
man conscience—is one which, by
precept and example, must be in-
culcated in the hearts and minds
of all Americans it the institutions
of our democracy are to be main-
tained and perpetuated. We must
recognize the fundamental rights
of man. There can be no true na-
tional life in our democracy unless
we give unqualified recognition of
freedom of religious worship and
freedom of education. We have not
forgotten, nor ever shall forget,
the noble service in the cause of
religious toleration rendered by the
Calverts in Maryland three cen-
turies ago.
"It gives me pleasure, therefore ,
to learn that the Commonweal, or -
gan of the Calvert Associates, has
arranged to celebrate in St. Pat-
rick's Cathedra( next Monday the
anniversary of the founding of
Maryland, and Maryland's part In
the establishment of religious liber-
ty in America. I have also learned
with peculiar satisfaction the
Commonweal believes that rarely
before in our history have pros-
pects for achieving permanent har-
mony among the various elements
composing our nation been no pro-
pitious as at the present time. I
rejoice in this assurance. .I pledge
myself at this solemn commemora-
tion with all the resources at my
command, to work for so happy a
consummation. My prayer shall
ever be, that this nation, under
God may vindicate through all
coming time the sanctity of the
right of all within our borders to
the free exercise of religion ac-
cording to the dictates of con-
science."
