NEW YORK. — (WN)S—The
largest utilities companies in New
York discriminate against the em-
ployment of Jews and this dis-
crimination is equally practiced by
banks, insurance companies, and
other employers of the so-called
"white collar market,” and fos-
tered by employment agencies, it
is charged by Rabbi J. X. Cohen,
chairman of the committee on
economic problems of the Ameri-
can Jewish Congress, in a pam-
phlet entitled "Jews, Jobs and
Discrimination," published by the
congress.
The pamphlet charges the New
York Telephone Co., the Consoli-
dated Gas Co., the American Tele-
phone and Telegraph Co., the
Western Electric Co. with dis-
criminations against Jews, and
lists the Chase National Bank, the
National City Bank and the
Guaranty Trust Company, the
three largest banks in this city,
as among the institutions dis-
criminating against Jews. A close
second to the banks are the in-
surance companies which likewise
object to the placement of Jews,
Quotes Testimony
Rabbi Cohen declares that al-
though the Civil Rights Law of
New York State makes it illegal
for a public utility company "to
refuse to employ any person in
any capacity in the operation or
maintenance of a public service
on account of the race or color
or religion of such a person," the
'New York Telephone Company,
which employs 45,000 persons,
continues to practice discrimina-
tion. Rabbi Cohen quotes the tes-
timony of a vocational counsellor
attached to the placement bureaus
serving high school graduates as
declaring: "It is assumed by all
the placement clerks that for jobs
in large corporations such as the
N. Y. Telephone Co., they are not
to send Jewish boys or girls." He
mentions a Mrs. Graves of the
N. Y. Telephone Co. as request-
ing a certain placement bureau
for a clerical worker with the ad-
monition "send no Jewish girl."
The manager of a Masonic em-
ployment agency informed Rabbi
Cohen: "I would be wasting my
time to send a Jew to the N. Y.
Telephone Co." A representative
of the Continuation Schools cor-
roborated this fact, declaring that
it was a tacit understanding that
Jews were not to be sent as ap-
plicants for positions with the
New York Telephone Co. Of the
American Telephone and Tele-
graph Co. he says that scouts of
the organization, sent to the lead-
ing technical schools in search of
new talent, are instructed not to
interview Jewish students, ir-
respective of their scholastic rec-
ord. Of the 45,000 employees of
the Consolidated Gas Co. only a
handful are Jews. And, says Rabbi
Cohen, "we have the word of a
number of non-Jewish employees
of that company that the non-
employment of Jews is the general
rule." While the Consolidated Gas
Co. has no question as to religion
on its application blank, Rabbi
Cohen reports that when he him-
self in the course of the investi-
gation applied for a job, he was
asked after he filled out his blank,
"What is your religion?"
Prejudice in Professions
Rabbi Cohen declares that the
investigators interviewed more
than 60 employment agency man-
agers who stated that the Jewish

Hundreds of workers were mobilized this
week for participation in the Allied Jewish
Campaign which will open officially on May
2 and will be conducted for a period of two
weeks in behalf of 47 local, national and
overseas causes.
Pre-campaign solicitations, however, will
start on Monday when a large group of workers in the
special gifts division will begin to contact contributors in
the larger brackets. A luncheon-meeting of the special
gifts division will be held at noon on Monday at Hotel
Statler in order to mobilize the work of this group.
Two important meetings in behalf of the campaign
•were held in the past week and
an unusual amount of enthusiasm
was generated by campaign lead-
ers and workers who heard out-
lines of the campaign objectives.

Be Prepared to Give
A Pre-Campaign Appeal to the Jews of Detroit to Be
Merciful in the Corning Drive
By KURT PEISER
Executive Director, Jewish Welfare Federation and Allied
Jewish Campaign
Only three weeks remain before the official opening of the
1937 Allied Jewish Campaign.
This means three weeks for preparedness—for community
mobilization in behalf of thousands of unfortunates who cry to
us for help in the present tragic hour of need.
We must this', in terms of the approaching drive, in order
that we may be prepared to give adequately of our means and
our time.
Our people has been called the nation of merciful sons.
Jewish traditions tell us that charity Is the salt of riches;
that it Is the greatest virtue; that the practice of beneficence
will assure the maintenance of one's possessions,
NOW is the time to practice these precepts.
NOW is the time to prepare ourselves to honor a great
heritage and in so doing to help those who are dependent
upon us.
NOW is the time to think in the most libera' terms and to
give in accordance with the needs of the hour.
Our plea is:
BE PREPARED TO GIVE GENEROUSLY TO THE ALLIED
JEWISH CAMPAIGN—AND TO DEVOTE YOUR TIME IN
ITS BEHALF!
