Non-Partisan Committee Is
Confident of Electing
Judges Fead and North
Louis II. Fead, aged 59, is pres-
ent chief justice of the State Su-
preme Court. Justice Walter H.
North, his colleague for re-election,
is 65 years old. The present terms
of both justices expire Dec. 31,
1937. Their names will appear on
Monday's ballot in the Republican
column, as nominees of the state
convention in February.
Both justices have long judicial
records, having served in state
Circuit courts before being ele-
vated to the Supreme Court bench.
Justice Fead was a circuit judge
in the Upper Peninsula for 15
years and has been nine years in
the Supreme Court. Justice North
was circuit judge of Calhoun
County (Battle Creek) for 21
years and has been 10 years in
the Supreme Court. The two jus-
tices have a combined total of 55
years of active court service. Nei-
ther of their opponents has had
any experience on the bench.
It Is the record of the two jus-
tices that inspired Wayne County
attorneys and voters to organize
the non-partisan committee to sup-
port them and disregard party la-
bels. Wayne County was the lead-
er years ago in having the election
of state judges in all courts held
in the spring, instead of Novem-
ber, so as to keep them out of the
spirited party fights over presi-
dents, governors and members of
Congress.
