Participate in the annual found-
er's day celebration, he asserted
that the ministry is a "man's job."
These services commemorate the
37th anniversary of the death of
Isaac Mayer Wise, founder of the
college, the Central Conference
of American Rabbis, the Union of
American Hebrew Congregations
and the first Anglo-Jewish weekly
in America, the American Israelite
of Cincinnati.
Dr. Franklin is the second alum-
ni lecturer, the list series having
been delivered last year by Dr.
William Rosenau of Baltimore.
In his series Dr. Franklin has
stressed the responsibilities of the
modern rabbi and his place in
community life.
"Unless to his task a man in-
tends to give all of himself —
his time and his talents. the best
gifts of his mind and of his heart,
and the full consecration of his
spirit—he had better seek some
other and less demanding field of
work," Dr. Franklin declared.
The speaker pointed out that
the results of a clergyman's work
defy measurement but called upon
those entering the ministry not to
be discouraged by that fact. "One
cannot measure the renewal of
spirit and the strengthening of
faith and the changed life. Nor
can one always know what the
fruitage will be of the the seeds
he is sowing here and there."
The rabbi must be a physician
of the soul, Dr. Franklin said.
"What the doctor does for the
non in physical pain, he must be
able to do for the person in spirit-
ual agony. Ile must be able to
lead to the light those who walk
in darkness and strengthen the
will of those who climb."
LONDON (WNS) — World
Jewry is mourning the untime-
ly death of Sir Austen Cham-
berlain, former British Foreign
Secretary and life-long friend
and supporter of the Jewish
people and l'alestine. A son of
Joseph Chamberlain, who, as
Prime Minister created a sensa-
tion by offering Uganda to
Theodor lierzl as a Jewish
homeland, Sir Austen inherited
his father's friendship for the
Jews. On numerous occasions he
publicly denounced anti-Semit-
ism and Spported Jewish as-
pirations in Palestine. In 1934
he warned Germany that she
faced the fate of Spain because
of her persecution of the Jews.
Last year he told the House of
Commons that Germany's treat-
ment of the Jews precluded any
chance of her getting back her
colonies. Three years ago the
Anglo-Palestine Club tendered
him a dinner in tribute to his
pro-Jewish speeches.

includes an 18th century Persian centerpieee, a hanging lamp of
great age, a collection of Matzo plates, three rare candelabra and
12 goblets, some of which date back to the 17th century. Five of
these goblets are shown above. From left to right will be seen first,

vowels as well as consonants and reading "Blessed Art Thou, King of
the Universe, Creator of the Fruit of the Vine"; and the largest
goblet, on the extreme right, is an unusually fine example of Reis-
