LORD MELCHETT
Born into the Church, the young
,
If you've ever said "I wish I could do something to im-
prove this room" or "I wish my home were as charm-
ing u Mrs. So-and-So's, but I don't know what to
do—," then this is your book!
It's as practical u a cook-book! 54 specific recipes
to solve 18 common room problems. Recipes that tell
you where to start ...what to get ...what colors to use
...how to freshen up your present furniahings...sthat
to buy later, when your budget allows!
Prepared by a staff of decorating
experts who understand your prob-
lems and talk your language ... who
know that you want to improve your
home without Tending much money!
Lord Melchett, following the ex-
ample of his late father, Alfred
Mond, has not merely returned to
Judaism but has embraced Zionism
with a fervor and an intelligence
which match that of the most vet-
eran Zionist leaders. But having
been a Christian is, fascinatingly
enough, explicit in the tone of the
entire book. There is neither sup-
pliance nor apology in Melchett's
account of Jewish persecution and
of the Jewish attempt to resist
that burden through the creation
of a national, independent life in
Palestine. The forthrightness in
Melchett's arguments is a refresh-
ing departure from much of Zion-
ist documentation.
There are few, if ani-rtter
and stronger statements of the
Jewish position than Lord Melchett
has written in "Thy Neighbor,"
published by H. C. Kinsey Co. He
surveys the panorama of Jewish
life and decides that hopelessness
is the lot of at least 6,500,000 Jews
in tyranny-ruled countries of Eu-
rope. For most of these he wants
place made in Palestine. He rec-
ognizes obstacles, of native popu-
lation and economic resources, but
visualizes these as surmountable,
given a continuous supply of
energy and capital. He reiterates
the frequently-heard demand for a
large loan under League of Na-
tions auspices which will accel-
erate the slow tempo of Jewish
migration into Palestine.

The one topic that has not been
sufficiently covered in textbooks
for use by our children, in and out
of our schools, is that dealing with
the Prophets. Dr. Comilla' new
book, which is a companion vol-
ume to Mamie G. Garnoran's "The
Voice of the Prophets," is a truly
excellent addition to the textbook
library dealing with the Bible and
Biblical characters.
Injecting into his work the em-
pathetic outlook of a teacher and a
devout Jew, Dr. Comins strikes
the kind of • note that is needed
to enthuse and inspire the stu-
dent. His book is a most human
study of the Prophets, their
works, their teachings and the
time in which they lived.
These descriptions 0f the back-
grounds which mark the activities
of the Prophets are an outstand-
ing mark of distinction about this
book. Direct quotation and refer-
ence to the fascinating Biblical
stories are among the methods
used to cover the subject. Further.
more, the interpretatoons are ably
applied, and on the whole the
author achieved an excellent re-
sult.

DARREN METALNaml Jacob.
The Dacral/laa Co.. New lork.
Few novelists understand the
Jew as well as the half-Jewess
Naomi Jacob. She has written ex-
tensively on Jewish themes and
her novels are classics in the fields
of novels about Jews.
Her newest work, "Barren
Metal," once again brings out her
marvellously deep understanding
of Jews and their problems. This
work is a triangle novel that ends
with a fine solution.
It is the story of Meyer and
Rachel Pardo. Meyer was born
into a poor family in Hamburg.
His parents took him to Englanil
and be grew up in a London
tailoring shop. Ile retained his
father's trade and was busy at it.
In a cheap restaurant he met the
waitress Rachel. There is an in-
teresting note in the narration of
the first meeting. Meyer felt bad
that he had not tipped her, but
then remarked to himself that it
is silly to tip the girl you are
going to marry.
Rachel was a loving wife who
bore her husband twin sons. They
lived simply and happily. But then
they grew rich. A mansion, a staff
of servants, jewelry, luxuries, mo-
torcars—all these bewildered
Rachel. She longed for her former
abode and work. She was hurt by
her husband's devotion to busi-
ness.
In search for sympathy. Rachel
fell in love with Sholto Falk. In
the meantime Meyer became in-
volved with an unscrulous group
and landed In jail for fraud. At
this time Rachel's devotion reas-
serted itself and she threw in her
lot with her husband's. She re-
turned to her former environ-
ment, that part of London which
she, In her heart, had never left,
and returned I. her work with the
decision to wait for her husband
and to give him again her loyalty.
It is not only an interesting
theme well told—it is a splendidly
related plot that is solved in an
original fashion. "Barren Metal"
is given the best of Naomi Jacob's
artistic touches.
At the annual banquet of the
Academy of Motion Picture Arts
and Sciences, Muni shared honors
with Luise Rainer, who won the
award for the best actress in 1936.
Muni, whose real name is Muni
Weisenfreud, is a native of Lem-
berg, , A stns. He started stage
work at the age of 13, 28 years
ago. For a score of years he
played in the Yiddish theater in
New York and elsewhere, and first
came to Hollywood to make movies
in 1927 ... Miss Rainer came to
Hollywood in 1935. Daughter of •
Vienna merchant, she went on the
stage when she was 16. Max Rein-
hardt starred her in "A Midsum-
mer Night's Dream." Her rise in
motion pictures has been spec-
tacular. The exotic, brown-eyed
actress won the best actress award
for her role in "The Great Zieg-
feld."
No Thwirial than in Germany or
Italy will Fascism come to power
in the United States in a free and
open contest on democratic lines.
Fascism never faces the funda-
mental issues at stake. It does not
even hesitate to masquerade under
the guise of democracy until the
day when it has the levers of con-
trol in its power. It always has
recourse to deception and dem-
agogy and measures that divert
the popular attention from what
is really the issue.
Simply look at Spain today: In-
ternational Fascism through its
powerful propaganda apparatus in
Western countries seeks to create
the impression that the struggle
of the Spanish people and their
constitutionally elected govern-
ment against Franco and his fel-
low agents of Hitler and the Ger-
man munitions trust is a Moscow-
inspired plot to install soviets. The
Spanish President, Azana, a mid-
dle-class liberal no whit redder
than Mr. Roosevelt, may deny any
such intention. Prominent Catho-
lics like Jose Bergamin, the editor
of the most influential Catholic
periodical published in Spain (and
probably in Europe) may defend
his own loyalty and that of mil-
lions of his fellow Catholics to the
Valencia government. It is of no
avail. Fascism's blaring propa-
ganda in this country drowns out
the voice of Spanish democracy
and hammers into millions of
minds the impression that General
Franco, head of the Moorish le-
gions of professional killers, is a
soft-mannered liberal and that his
financier, Juan March, the con-
victed purveyor of the world's
brothels, is the champion of de-
cency, the defender o fthe home
and of Spain's traditional religion.
Neither imperialism nor capital-
ist abuses, the Nazis proclaimed,
were responsible for the humiliated
condition of the German people be-
fore Hitler came into power, but
Jewish international financiers,
Jewish plotters and "Judeo-Bol-
shevik" agitators. Fascism puts up
an immediate, visible and tangible
objectivve upon which to unload
the pent-up wrath of the under-I
privileged, the down-trodden and
the frustrated.
Ake.
What better, what more logical
victim could it indicate in Amer.
ica than the Jew? What do you l
think is the sense and purpose of I
the mass of eulogistic articles on
the subject of the Hitler regime
on the occasion of the fourth an-
niversary of its coming to power
recently? We were informed by a l
score of magazines and publica-
tions that everything is wonderful
and marvelous in Germany now
and that Hitler's success is due to
the fact that, in the first place,;
he dared put the Jew in his place.
This is nothing less than indicat-
ing to the American people the
scapegoat for a crisis or a depres-j
sio nto come. Millions of uncritical
minds are being prepared for that j
day.
I cannot imagine any other
method of combat against this
menace than for the Jews of Amer-
ica to take their stand resolutely
with the most liberal forces, with
the liberal advance-guard in this
country, against Fascism. Any
other tactics, any attempt to come
to a compromise or to make a deal
with Fascism is suicidal.
Together we may yet bar the
road to these marauders of ha-
manity. We have four year to mo.
baize and organize our defenses
—130 more.
