More Than 20,000 People Pack Madison Square Garden at
Huge Demonstration Against the Nazi Terror and
Its Spread in the United States

RESOLUTION BRANDS HITLERISM AS THE GRAVEST
MENACE TO "PEACE, CIVILIZATION, DEMOCRACY"

World Leaders, Members of Congress, Governors Send Messages
of Sympathy and Approve the Program of the
American Jewish Congress

NEW YORK.—More than 20,000 people packed Madison
Square Garden on Monday evening and staged a demonstration
against Hitlerism and the efforts of Nazis to spread their poison to
this country.
The Vast audience cheered the speakers, John L. Lewis, head
of the Committee for Industrial Organization; Dr, Stephen S.

Wise and B. C. Vladeck, chairmen respectively of the American Jewish Congress and
the Jewish Labor Committee, under whose joint asupices the demonstration was ar-
ranged; Gen. Hugh S. Johnson, former administrator of the NRA ; Miss Erika Mann,
who spoke in her own behalf as well as in behalf of her father, Thomas Mann, the
greatest living German writer who is now in exile; Dr. Frank Bohn, son-in-law of Dan-
iel Roper, secretary of commerce; Dr. Joseph Tenenbaum, chairman of the Joint Boy-
cott Committee, and Mayor Flor-

ae La Guardia, who made a last-
minute appearance and was given
a great ovation.
When Mayor La Guardia made
his surprise appearance before the
vast gathering, he was cheered
endlessly, and Gen. Johnson's
speech was interrupted with a de-
mand for La Guardia's comments.
The fighting mayor of New York
declared that Hitler is not "satis-
faktionsfaehig"—meaning that it
is beneath dignity to debate with
the Nazi leader.

Detroit Jews will be asked to contribute the sum of $385,000 during the Allied
Jewish Campaign to be conducted here from May 2 to May 15, for relief of Jews in
Poland, Germany and other European countries; for the upbuilding of the Jewish Na-
tional Home in Palestine; for local relief, educational and recreational efforts, and for
important national agencies devoted to the defense of Jewish rights in this country and
in lands of oppression.
The board of governors of the Jewish Welfare Federation of Detroit, at a meet-
ing held on Monday afternoon, adopted this budget which was decided upon by a corn-

past few years, due to the depression that followed the closing of
the banks, overseas relief causes received the lowest appropriations
on record from Detroit. The immense tragedy existing in Europa
today is making demands of unprecedented nature upon American
Jewry, and the combined national quotas of the Joint Distribution
Committee and the United Palestine Appeal are for a total of
$9,150,000. These two causes asked Detroit to contribute $300,-
000, but a compromise was reached for half this sum which is in-
cluded in the campaign total.
Commenting on the campaign quota, Kurt Peiser, executive
director of the Federation, made the following statement:

Dr. Cecil Roth, who already has to his credit
a number of very scholarly historical works, has
just produced a book which is without doubt one
of the most significant documents published in a
hundred years from the view point of its con-
demnation of an ancient calumny and its plea
for justice and truth in dealing with the Jewish
people.
"The Ritual Murder Libel and the Jew"
comes from the Woburn Press of London and is
being distributed by Edward Goldston, Ltd., 25,
Museum St, London, W. C. I. (7/6d). In this
volume Dr. Roth pays a glowing compliment to
the Catholic Church by giving honor to various
Pontiffs throughout history and to the general
Jewish policy of the Holy See.
Occasion for this compliment is provided
by the 160th anniversary of the death of Cardinal
Lorenzo Ganganelli who, just before he became
Pope Clement XIV, presented an encyclical in
which the ritual murder charge against the Jews
was branded infamous and false. Maintaining that
he considers it a privilege to offer tribute to the
memory of this eminent Catholic, Dr. Roth, re-
ferring to the ancient libel of ritual murder
made against the Jews, makes the following
significant statement:
