Urge Temple of Religious and
. Civil Liberty

The American Committee of
Religious Rights and Minorities,
of which Dr. Arthur J. Brown is
the chairman, made formal appli-
cation to the World's Fair Cor-
poration to erect a temple of re-
ligious and civil liberty dedicated
to "the ideal that men are to be
just and brotherly to one another
irrespective of racial origin, their
religious affiliation and their poli-
tical connection."
The application was in the form
of a letter addressed to Grover
C. Whalen as president of the
World's Fair Corporation by Dr.
Stephen S. Wise in behalf of the
committee consisting of Michael
Williams, editor of the Catholic
publication The Commonweal. and
Dr. John Howland Lathrop of the
Church of the Saviour, Brooklyn,
named for this purpose some time
ago by the American Committee
of Religious Rights and Minori-
ties.
The communication points out
that "there could be no more
desirable contribution in the re-
alm of religious and racial toler-
ance at this time when so many
forces of hatred are at large In
the world and even in our own
country," and expresses the view
that it will find "the widest in-
terest in all nations."

U. S. PROTEST TO GERMANY

Slur

on Women );firings Action; Latest Developments
Resulting From La Guardia's Con-
demnation of Hitler

The United States Government will officially protest
against Nazi aspersions on Jews, Mayor La Guardia and
Jewish women. Secretary of State Hull has ordered U. S.
Ambassador to Germany William E. Dodd to lodge a
strong oral protest.
The demand for such a protest came from WI.
Stephen S. Wise, president of the Women's Division of
the American Jewish Congress, at whose annual luncheon
Mayor La Guardia made his attack on the Hitler regime.
In the meantime American Nazis stepped into the
picture and an attack was launched Thursday by Fritz
Kuhn of Detroit, head of the German American Bund,
upon Congressman Dickstein, who demanded an investiga-
tion of Nazi activities in this country. Kuhn, who denies
being a Nazi agent, although his desk is reported littered
with swastika-imprinted literature, was shown in the com-
pany of Adolf Hitler in a photograph printed in the Oct.
30, 1936, issue of The Detroit Jewish Chronicle.
The U. S. protest to Germany was demanded of Sec-
cretary of State Hull by Mrs. Wise in the following tele-
gram:

Luncheon March 16

While the Jews in Germany fear new repercussions
as a result of the La Guardia incidents, American public
opinion is lining up in support of the battling New York
mayor who is partly of Jewish descent on his mother's
side, but whose father was an Italian and who is himself
an Episcopalian.
In a speech in Washington on Monday Mayor La
Guardia repeated what he said at the Jewish Congress
meeting in New York and declared "if Hitler thinks I am
referring to him, he is absolutely right."
Taking advantage of Mayor La Guardia's suggestion
that a figure of Hitler ought to be the principal exhibit in
a chamber of horrors at New York's world fair, Billy Rose,
promoter of spectacles, sent a certified check for $5,000
to the world's fair commission as a deposit for the right
to operate the proposed chamber of horror. Noting that
the Nazi press had described him as the "guidance of the
expert white slaver, La Guardia," Rose offered to set up
the exhibit under the name of the New Germany on a five-
acre tract. The exhibit would consist of a chamber7f
horrors dramatizing the life of Hitier, a visual and au-
thenticated portrayal of the concentration camp, a factual
representation in wax of the blood purge, a hall of culture
comprising books burned by the Nazis, a symphony or-
chestra playing works banned in Germany and a human
diorama of the Reichstag tire. Rose said that the proposed
exhibit would play to 10,000,000 people if he got the
consession.
