Fight Student Exchange Between

CLEVELAND, 0. (WNS)—A

student exchange plan between
German and Greater Cleveland
high school pupils sponsored by
the Berlin board of education and
pushed by Carl 0. Ahrendt, Cleve-
land manager of the Hamburg-
American and North German
Lloyd steamship companies ap-
pears to have gone on the rocks
as the result of a vigorous protest
launched by Rabbi Barnett It.
Brickner of the Euclid Avenue
Temple. After Rabbi Brickner had
denounced the plan in an open
letter to newspapers and superin-
tendents of Greater Cleveland
schools as a Nazi propaganda
stunt seeking to "poison the
minds of American students,"
Presidents of boards of educa-
tions in Greater Cleveland indi-
cated opposition to the move. In
a poll of superintendents most of
them indicate no interest in the
plan or outright opposition. Op-
position was expressed by Ray C.
Miller of the *Cleveland school
board, Thomas F. McDonald of
the Lakewood school board, and
B. B. Wickham of the East Cleve-
land school board. Other school
officials declined to comment.
Ahrendt said 160 Cleveland stu-
dents had expressed a desire to
make the trip.

Rabbi A. SI. Hershman was one
of the speakers at the 19th annual
convention of the Women's League
of the United Synagogue of
America held in Pittsburgh from
Sunday through Tuesday, Feb. 28
to March 2.
Mrs. Samuel Spiegel of New
York was re-elected president of
the Women's League of the United
Synagogue of America for the 11th
consecutive term,
Dr. Cyrus Adler, president of
the Jewish Theological Seminary
of America, guest speaker at the
convention's golden jubilee lunch-
eon to celebrate the Seminary's
50th anniversary, expressed Con-
servative Judaism's deep gratitude
to Orthodox "for its warm enthus-
iasm and the light of learning it
kept aglow in the past" and to
Reform "for its insistence on de-
corum and esthetic appeal in re-
ligious worship and its, recognition
that Judaism must be adjusted to
the requirements of modern
thought." Conservative Judaism,
he said, parts company with these
movements in refusing to "accept
Orthodoxy's hatred of modernism
and resistance to change and de-
velopment" and in seeking "to
avoid the emptiness of Jewish con-
tent, the absence of zeal and the
spiritual anemia all to often char-
acteristic of Reform." That these
criticisms are justified is proved,
Dr. Adler declared, "by the fact
that ideas and practices of Con-
servative Judaism are being wide-
ly adopted by Orthodox and Re-
form leaders and congregations.
Conservatism, however, is more
than a middle-of-the-road move-
ment or compromise between ex-
tremes. Its philosophy may be
summarized in the statement that
Judaism is the evolving religious
civilization of the Jewish people.
It stands foursquare upon the basis
of the peoplehood of Israel, which
has expressed itself in a rich and
manifold culture, embracing every
area of human experience."
Mrs. Spiegel read a message to
the convention from President
Roosevelt in which he expressed
the hope "that the deliberations
to be undertaken will promote and
encourage the exemplifications of
the highest teachings of traditional
Judaism."

Lillian D. Wald's 70th
Birthday on March IO

One of the most beloved women
of the present century. Founder
of the world-famous Henry Street
Visiting Nursing Service which
has become the model for similar
Institutions throughout the world.
Born in Cincinnati. Educated at
the exclusive Miss Crittenden's
School in Rochester, Came to New
York 'to study nursing. In 1893
she organized the Henry Street
Settlement, one of the most fa-
mous settlement houses in the na-
tion. From this grew the Nursing
Service. Served as first president
of National Organization for Pub-
lic Health Nursing. Suggested
town and country nursing system
of Red Cross. Was member of the
N e w York State Immigration
Commission in 1909. Helped two
generations of immigrants to find
their place in the New World.
Credited with being one of the
pioneers in immigrant welfare
work. It was her idea that led to
appointment of first public health
nurses In New York's public
schools. Is the real creator of the
Federal Children's Bureau. At-
tended numerous international
conferences an health, child wel-
fare and industrial relations as
an official American delegate. Was
one of the three women represen-
tatives at the industrial conven-
tion called by President Wilson
in Washington. Went to Russia
in 1924 on the invitation of the
Soviet Government to advise on
children's problems. Three presi-
dents sought her advice on child
healt hand protection. Holds
honorary degrees from Mt. Hol-
yoke and Smith College. Won the
1912 National Institute of Social
Sciences' medal and the Rotary
Club award In 1923. Was the first
woman to be guest of honor at a
banquet of the Society of the
Genesee, Acknowledged as the
chief inspiration of Mrs. Franklin
D. Roosevelt. Was co-chairman of
the Good Neighbor League. Now
in virtual retirement, but her in-
fluence is nation-wide. Probably
the- best known Jewess in America.

One of the important books of
the past year, in the history of
religion, is The Hasidic An-
thology, a collection of tales and
teachings of Hasidism, compiled
by Rabbi Louis I. Newman. In the
forth of parables, folk-tales, fables,
anecdotes, etc., Rabbi Newman has
compressed into one large volume
some of the basic material in the
history, literature, and doctrines
of that important phase of Jewish
development which had Ito incep-
tion in the 18th century. In a
very comprehensive introduction
the movement of Hasidism is
characterized as one of the most
remarkable manifestations of the
religious spirit in modern times.
Hasidism, as a phase of Juda-
ism, is more than a cult; it has
been designated as a culture, and
as such, its teachings are worthy
of being preserved. Since medical
matters have always been closely
interwoven into the history and
culture of religions, a survey of
medical attitudes as revealed in
this Anthology will surely give an
index of the spiritual and practi-

Palestine Songs

A. W. Binder Says Modern
Melodies of Chalutzim Are
Rhythmic and Enthusiastic

A. W. Binder's "Palestine in
Song," published by the Metro
Music Co., 58 Second Ave., New
York City ($1), is an important
addition to the Jewish music
library.
In this 30-page brochure Mr.
Binder, head of the department of
Jewish music at the Jewish Insti-
tute of Religion and director of
music at the Free Synagogue in
New York, has collected, edited
and arrange(' a set of new Pales-
tinian songs.
Besides the music and English
transcriptions of the texts, this
booklet contains the Hebrew text
of each song. Each song is sum-
marized in explanatory notes at
the very beginning of the book.
This collection is a follow-up to
a similar volume published two
years ago. Mr. Binder states in
his preface that this new group
"is distinguished from its prede-
cessors, inasmuch as most of the
songs are the actual creations of
certain Chalutzim who are com-
posing the most popular songs of
Palestine. These are Zaira, Festal-
sky Gurachov and Matithyahu
Wein
er, the Shepherd of Beth
Aloha."
"The most distinguishing fea-
tures of the modern Palestine songs
are not to be found in the melodies
as yet, but rather in the rhythms,
tonalities and texts," Mr. Binder
writes. "Almost all of the songs
contain rhythmic features which
are buoyant, moving, enthusiastic
and In some cases individual. This
is indeed a welcome and new char-
acteristic in the Jewish folk song
as compared with the monotonous
and imitated •rhythms of mast of
the songs of the Galuth."
