WHEN JEWS MEET AGAIN

Scientist Rejects Nazism

To the credit of Dr. J. McKeen Cattell,
editor of the Science Press, there is now
recorded an interesting rejection of Naz-
ism. Dr. Catteil was offered a renewal of
his Ph. D. degree which he received from
the University of Leipzig 50 years ago.
The offer was made to him by Dr. Hans
Borchers, German consul general in New
York. It is believed to be gone of a series
of offers being made to American scien-
tists in an effort to win their support for
the Nazi system of education. In his re-
jection, Dr. Cattell wrote as follows:
"It is my good fortune to have been a
student at Goettingen and Leipzig when
the German universities were at the zen-
ith of their great contribution to research
and scholarship, to academic integrity
and freedom. I wish to retain the diploma
granted me 50 years ago without renewal
under changed conditions."
Thus speaks a great scientist and • fine
American. This should be the spirit of
all Americans.

Quoting Scriptures

When Shakespeare let one of his char-
acters in "The Merchant of Venice" say
"The Devil quoth Scripture for his pur-
pose," he coined a phrase which is applic-
able in every crime and every age. This
clever saying is now particularly apropos
to a Jewish savant in Italy.
Prof. Ancelom Colombo made a state-
ment recently in a lecture before the Jew-
ish Cultural Union of Pisa in Rome in
which he sought to establish that the prin-
ciples of Fascism are derived from the Tal-
mud. He even asserted that the inter-
preters of the Talmud were the true teach-
ers of Mussolini. Evidently there is no
limit to the crimes that will be attributed
to Scripture and Talmud. Devil and saint
both invoke ancient writings and there is
hardly a cause that evidently will not be
ascribed, if it has not already been ascrib-
ed, to ancient writings. Miracles wia

I remained at Yagur for about
a week.
One night the monotonous con-
cert of the jackals and dogs
round the Kevin* was broken into
by loud shouts of alarm. Three
old Jews had been attacked on
the road in front of Yagur and
beaten until the blood flowed.
Hans. as the chauffeur of Yagur,
cranked up his lorry and started
out to fetch a doctor. The ma-
chine was already in motion when
one of his companions inside
shouted to him to stop. In the
patch of light from the headlights,
he had discerned a barricade of
stones placed across the road by
some Arabs. After a brief ex-
change of shots. the Arabs ran
away.
The day which followed upon
that trying night began like any
other. At four in the morning
the cows were milked. at half-
past four the kitchen began to

hall was not 10 metres long. but
about 50; and even that was soon
to be superseded by the handsome
two-story building which is • com-
bination of dining hall, theater,

Another still unfinished struc-
ture of large proportions caught
the visitor's eye. This was the
Ludwig Tietz Manual Training
School, which offers a three-years'
course in handicrafts to 60 young
people of the German Youth Ali-
Yah. There is. besides, a group
of 40 frond the German Youth
Aliyah who are living at Yagur
and working in all sections of the
Kevuza (but chiefly in the agri-
cultural departments).

History of Mt. Sinai of Cleveland

Hospital Data

Compiled by Detroit Jewish Physicians'
Hospital Committee

The history of the Mt. Sinai
Hospital of Cleveland is similar
to that of most Jewish hospitals
In the United States, in that its
beginnings were modest and in-
auspicious. In 1892, the Young
Ladies Hebrew Association began
to raise funds for • Jewish hospi-
tal. After three years $1,500 was
collected. In 1900, the Jewish
Women's Hospital Society was or-
ganized, and two years later with
a total cash of $7,500, purchased •
residence which was remodeled
into a hospital was a capacity of
29 beds and named the Mt. Sinai
Hospital. In 1904 the financial
burden of this hospital was ac-
cepted by the newly organised
Federation of Jewish Charities. In

1907, the Federation opposed a
plan to raise $20,000 for hospital
improvements, on the ground that
this amount of money would be in-
eufficient On Dec. 16, 1912, it was
proposed to raise a fund of $300,
000 to $350,000 for a new hospital
building, land and equipment.
On Jan. 6, 1913, the Cleveland
Jewish Hospital Association was
incorporated. In this year, the
board of trustees of the Cleveland
Federation authorized the hospital
board to solicit $400,000 from the
community for a new hospital. On
Jan. 7, 1914, $467,419 was sub-
scribed, and on Jan. 6, 1915, a
total of $522,266 au reached.
