Judging Our Judges

Many people, even Judge Ned
H. Smith 'a closest friends, marvel
at the abilities of this man who
has overcome nature's greatest
handicap.
Born with very weak eyesight,
Judge Smith spent his early
schooling in the sight-saving clas-
ses of the Public Schools. He be-
came totally blind in the winter

JUDGE NED H. SMITH

of 1918-19 at which time he froze
his eye-balls. Many trying months
were spent in the hospital at Ann
Arbor. Judge Smith's greatest
consolation during his period as a
patient was his nurse. Her sym-
pathetic understanding and un-
usual care, brought a light into
this otherwise dark life—a light
that continues to shine brightest
of all lights for this unusual young
man. Judge Smith married his
nurse, thus giving him a cause to
be almost thankful for his loss of
sight. Incidentally, Judge Smith
will celebrate his 10th wedding an-
niversary this year.
Another very human bit of joy
in the life of our friend Ned is
his charming little daughter, Bar-
bara Ann. She is seven years old
and in many instances, acts as
eyes to her talented dad.
Judge Smith gets a great deal
out of life. He reads Braile, uses
a typewriter, plays an unusually
good game of bridge, dances,
swims, skates and, believe it or
not, bowls.
