The Schmeling Boycott We take issue with the Boston Jewish Advocate in its editorial opinion that it is unwise to boycott Max Schmeling's pro- posed fight with Jim Braddock. We feel that the Boston Advocate has not stated the case correctly when it says that Schmeling is being boycotted because he is a German. That is far from the truth and is in more than one sense a slur on the boycott in this country. Even the most rabid advocate of a boycott of Nazi goods and Nazi services has never spoken in terms of boycotting Germans. The truth of the matter is that on every occasion Germans were drawn into the movements that have been inaugurated to protest against Nazi atrocities. On every occasion emphasis was placed on the desire to dif- ferentiate between "Nazis" and "Ger- mans." BIRON (copyright. 1157, II A. ) YOU SHOULD KNOW Lord Melchett is coming to the United States in February in con- nection with the publication here of his book on Palestine. Eliezer Kaplan, treasurer of the Jewish Agency and generally regarded as the greatest adminis- trator and financier the Zionist movement has ever had, is coming to America with Dr. Chaim Weis- mann. Speakers at the luncheon ses- sion of the American Jewish Corn- mittee's annual meeting, the only one not held behind closed doors, I made it plain that they wouldn't be at all sorry if the press ifs. nosed their remarks . . . William Rosenwald went so far as to cau- tion the gentlemen of the press present not to make notes of his address. Dr. A. E. Abramowitz, former editor of the Jewish Champion, has been named executive director of the Chicago Zionist Organiza- tion ... The other candidate con- sidered was Rabbi J. L. Zlotnick, formerly of Canada. The 92nd St. Y. M. H. A. is using space in the New York daily press to advertise its facilities ... And the New York Post used a line of Hebrew type in an adver- tisement of the English transla- tion of Abraham Mapu's novel, "The Shepherd Prince." ROADSIDE GLEANINGS Now that the Reinhardt-Werfel- Weill production of "The Eternal Road" has started on what pro- ducer Meyer Welsgal hopes is an eternal run you may be interested in some inside dope on the spec- tacle . . . No, we won't bore you with statistical details regarding how many dollars and cents were spent on how many miles of elec. tric cable, and all that sort of thing .. . But we must tell you about the first full stage rehearsal, which we witnessed—or, anyway, what happened to Ruth the Moabitess there ... Ruth, played by sweet-voiced Katherine Car- rington, missed a cue that night . Boaz—Ralph Jameson to you —sleepily rubbed his eyes as he turned to address her—but no Ruth was there ... The rehearsal had to be halted . . . Francesco von Mendelssohn, assistant to Reinhardt, began to grow per- tusbed, and the maestro himself was almost glowering when at last the lady made her appearance ... And what happened? ... She had lost her way crossing over from one side to the other of the vast rebuilt Manhattan Opera House stage! .. . Then there was the night when ninth-floor guests at the Hotel New Yorker complained that they couldn't sleep .. . One of the Reinhardt all-night re- hearsals was going on, and the chorus of angels' voices, separated from the New Yorker ninth floor by only a thin wall, was keeping the hotel guests awake . . On that night, too, a couple of police- men came to the rehearsal about 6 A, M. to locate a cast member whose family, unfamiliar with the Reinhardt tradition, had reported her absence to the Missing Per- sons Bureau. ROAD SUPERLATIVES Perhaps the most novel occur- rence at any of the "Eternal Road" rehearsals occurred on New Year's Eve, when, at t he stroke of midnight, the orchestra suddenly swung from Kurt Weill's music into the strains of "Auld Lang Syne" and the cast stopped rehearsing to join in the chorus . . Among the most interesting rehearsal scenes was the picture of Herr Director Reinhardt show- ing four small boys how to enact the David and Goliath scene which brings down the house at every performance now ... The funniest thing your correspondent has seen in many a year was the imitation of the David and Batsheba scene by two of the said small boys— though this, of course, is some- thing that "Eternal Road" audi- ( PLEASE TURN TO NEXT PAGE ) Not only did the morning concerts typify The annual report of Dr. Cyrus Adler, the two faiths, but the very atmosphere of the president of the American Jewish Corn- symbolically decorated hall touched the depths sters. mittee, placed emphasis on what he be- of one's inner self.
