NEW YORK (WNS)—Critical
acclaim unparalleled in the cur-
rent dramatic season and audience
enthusiasm which, to quote one re-
viewer, "took the roof off" the
Manhattan Opera House, greeted
the long-awaited world premiere
of Max Reinhardt's production of
"The Eternal Road," the biblical
drama by Franz Werfel, in the
translation of Ludwig Lewisohn
and with music by Kurt
Weill. A first-night audi-
ence comprising many of New
York's most distinguished citizens
sat spellbound through the three
acts of the spectacle, in which dra-
ma, music and dance were so skil-
fully blended that Mrs. James
Roosevelt, mother of the President,
declared that the evening had been
her "greatest thrill in the theater."
On the largest indoor stage in
the city hundreds of actors, singers
and dancers, reinforced by scores
of stagehands behind the scenes
and by a large technical staff en-
gaged in coordinating the com-
plicated electrical and mechanical
equipment used in the spectacle,
brought to life the patriarchs,
prophets and kings of the Bible,
its scenes interwoven with the
story of a persecuted congrega-
tion gathered In a synagogue,
awaiting the final decree of exile
from the land where they had
made their home. Immediately per-
sonal drama alternating with mag-
nificent pageantry called forth
frequent bursts of applause, and
the whole evoked an ovation to
Max Reinhardt which kept a clap-
ping audience in its seats many
minutes after the performance was
over.
The first world premiere of a
Reinhardt stage production to take
place in America, "The Eternal
Road" opening represented the cut.
mination of three years of effort
In which Meyer W. Weisgal, for-
mer editor of the New Palestine
and the Toronto Jewish Standard,
promoted the presentation which
required an expenditure of almost
half a million dollars and necessi-
tated the rebuilding of the Man-
hattan Opera House stage to ac-
commodate the settings designed
by Norman Bel Geddes to give
form to the Reinhardt conception
of the Werfel-Weill drama. The
production, originally scheduled to
open late in 1936, was postponed
10 times, due first to financial and
later to technical difficulties, aris-
ing from the magnitude of the
project.
