1THE JEWISH COMMUNITY AND
ITS AFFILIATED AGENCIES

EDITOR'S NOTE! The following is one of a series of brief sketches

describing the work of Jewish agencies affiliated with the Jewish
Welfare Federation of Detroit and receiving their incons• fres
the Allied Jewish Campaign.

THE YIDDISH SCHOOLS

For the first time this year, the Yiddish schools were
included in the budget of the Allied Jewish Campaign for
a sum of $2,000. This nominal allocation was made pend-
ing a survey of the work of these schools and their student
population which is planned for in the near future.
The schools included in this group are the branches of
the Farband Folk School (Jewish National Workers Al-
liance), the Sholom Aleichem Folk Institute and the
Workmen's Circle (Arbeiter Ring).
The Sholom Aleichem Folk Institute has two elemen-
tary schools, a children's theater studio and a theater
group for adults. There are two women's reading circles.
The total attendance in these schools is 150, and the chil-
dren are taught by four teachers.
The Workmen's Circle conducts two schools which are
also supplemented by youth groups.
The Farband, or Jewish National Workers Alliance,
conducts its school for the children of the organization
as well as for others who are interested in sending their
children to this school which teaches Yiddish and Hebrew
as well as Jewish history.

Will Give Two Illustrated Lect-
ures on Russia at Cass Tech
This.Sunday

The complete motion picture
gory of what Russia is doing to-
day, with the latest news and the
latest problems of the rapidly
evolving Soviet social order, will
be presented by Julien Bryan, ex-

through European Russia, from
the Volga and Astrakhan down
through the Crimea, then back to
Leningrad and Moscow.• Julien
Bryan, who has visited Russia
annually for seven years, com-
pleted these pictures only two
months ago.
The afternoon lecture open with
colorful shots of the Volga, with
its old churches and monasteries,
its old and new boats, and throngs
of peasants fighting their way
upstream. Next comes Astrak-
han, once-famous Tartar capital.
Here Bryan filmed the caviar i -
dustry, one of Russia's greatest.
Ile visits Baku, the city of 700,-
000, which leads Russia in mod-
ern housing, and its surrounding
oil fields with great new gushers
that will be Russia's sinews of
war if attacked by Hitler.
At 8:30 Sunday evening comes
Part Two. First is Kiev, with its
colorful street scenes, crowded
trolley cars, new stores and old
churches. Ile shows in motion
pictures the operation of a Jewish
court, officered entirely by Jews
and conducted In Ilebrew—a long
step away from the cruel po-
groms of yesterday. A feature
of the Kiev visit is the filming of
the Ukraine Motion Picture Stud-
ious as they photograph their Rus-
sian version of "Tom Sawyer."
Bryan's comments on the new
Russian motion picture industry
and its aims give a revealing in-
sight into Soviet policies.
Reserved seats for both lec-
tures are on sale at the World
Adventure Series office at the De-
troit Institute of Arts, Temple

PRAGUE (WNS) —Hundreds
of Jewish craftsmen and artisans
in Bohemia have been thrown out
of work as a result of the crisis
in Britain. At work on a 5,000,-
000 kronen order of coronation
jewelry, the Jewish workers have
been laid off because of the pos-
sibility that there may not be
any coronation exercises in May.
Synagogues here are packed with
Jewish workers praying that King
Edward VIII will not abdicate.

New York City, that a machin-
ery must be created which will
act when races and religions are
threatened with abuse.
Mrs. Harand, an Austria Cath-
olic, editor of the weekly news-
paper, "Gerechtigkeit" or "Jus-
tice" said: "Anti-Semitism is the
same for the soul and mind as
black typhus is for the body. It
makes people sick in the heart and
head."
She said: "We in Austria look
across our frontiers and see the
hateful laws of the Third Reich.
They are a blow in the face of
cultural and human dignity."
A young woman of 36 with a
Messianic sincerity, Mrs. Harrand,
whose husband is the manager of
a candy factory in Vienna, is the
author of "His Battle," which was
written as an answer to Ilitler'a

in the Reich mentioning the pa-
per. The letter always address
her as "Dear Aunt," although she

ing the boycott being carried on

officially Jewish leadership here
is maintaining a strictly guarded
silence on the constitutional cri-
sis created by King Edward's wish
to marry Mrs. Wallis Simpson,
Jewish spokesmen privately feel
that the situation contains a num-
ber of possibilities that could eas-
ily affect Jewish interests. It is
pointed out that Sir Oswald Mos-
ley, Blackshirt leader, who is cap-
italizing on the popular support
for the King by staging public
demonstrations in his favor and
rousing public opinion against
Prime Minister Baldwin, might
conceivably be invited to become
a member of a government friend-
o . the King should the present
I K ytg
cabinet resign. On the other
hand, such militantly pro-Jewish
leaders as Winston Churchill, Col,
Josiah Wedgwood and Lord Mar-
ley are vigorously supporting the
King.
The chief feat of Jewish opin-
ion here is that if the King should
abdicate the British Empire would
lose so much prestige that the
Jewish position in Palestine might
be weakened. It is also felt that
a demoralized British Empire at
this critical moment in European
affairs would impair Britain's ef-
fectiveness as a bulwark against
Fascism and . Nazism. Wild ru-
mors that the King's attitude is
being determined by a desire to
net up a royal dictatorship and
that Mrs. Simpson is secretly in
touch with Fascist forces are
not taken seriously. Among those
who are in close touch with the
King and are serving him loyally
in the present crisis are Sir I'hilip
Sassoon, under secretary in the
Air Ministry, and Philip Guedalla,
both personal friends of Edward
VIII. Guedalla and Harold J.
Laski are the only Jews who have
taken any public stand on the is-
sue. Guedalla wrote an article in
the News•Chronicle justifying the
King's position, while Laski, Lab-
orite spokesman, pointed out that
Edward's stand creates the dan-
ger of Fascism. Jewish religious
groups, however, are privately
spmpathetic to the Baldwin gov-
ernment and the Church of Eng-
land, holding that on religious
grouds the King is wrong.
The government's "public order
bill"'outlawing the wearing of po-
litical uniforms and designed to
curb Fascist agitation moved an-
other step toward becoming law
when it was passed in the House
of Commons. Final action on the
measure in the House came as a
surprise, since virtually no busi-
ness has been tranacted since the
development of the constitutional
crisis. The bill now goes to the
House of Lords.
