front oar own troubles to send
aid to a persecuted and oppressed
people abroad for fear of offend-

ell° H. La Guardia declared in an
address to the 13th annual con-

ors in Palestine. Predicting that
rulers of modern countries where
persecution exists will share the
fate of the Romanoffs and the
Hapsburgs, Mayor La Guardia
said the committee's work was
"a great cause" because "in help-
ing the working people in Pales-
tine, you are helping Palestine it-
self, because the welfare of the
country is identical with the wel-
fare of the workers."
Other speakers were Dr. Steph-
en S. Wise, Joseph Berets, fra-
ternal delegate of the Federation
of Jewish Workers in Palestine;
Abraham Dickenstein, manager
of the Federation; Joseph Schloss-
berg and Alexander Kahn, co-
national chairmen of the commit-
tee; and David Pinski. Dr. Wise
praised the role of President
Roosevelt in aiding oppressed
Jews abroad, declaring that "no
one could have done more for
us In our hour of need than has
been done by the President of
the United States." Isaac Item-
lin, general secretary of the com-
mittee, reported that the organ-
ization had raised $129,000 dur-
ing the past year, an increase of
$42,000 over the previous year.
In the 12 years since it was found-
ed the committee raised $1,500,-
000.
The convention adopted a quota
of $500,000 for the coming year
and voted to send a delegation
of trade union leaders to Pales-
tine to study the Jewish labor
movement there. The conven-
tion also endorsed the request of
the Palestine Jewish Labor Bank
that American Jews should de-
posit funds in that bank.
