Congregations of
Hebrew Schools
By J. M. MATHIS
Among the extracurricular ac-
tivities and projects of the United
Ilebrew Schools, the Junior Con-
gregations occupy a place of honor.
The pupils of the various branches
of the United Hebrew Schools at-
tend every Saturday the Sabbath
morning services, which are con-
ducted by the children themselves
under the guidance and supervis-
ion of their instructors. These
congregations enjoy a great deal
of autonomy, and the children are
given the opportunity, in fact they
are encouraged, to use their ini-
tiative in all the activities of their
congregations. The boys and girls
elect their own officers and plan
their synagogue and social pro-
grams. During the services the
traditional liturgy is followed and
the "Chazon" also conducts the
congregational singing. Many boys
have, through these services, be-
come most proficient "Chazonim,"
and the majority of our Detroit
synagogues have as their junior
cantors boys who received their
training in the children's syna-
gogues of the United Hebrew
Schools.
It is gratifying to note that our
young children are developing an
understanding as well as a rev-
erent attitude towards the syna-
gogue, and that they are acquiring
a deep sense of responsibility to-
wards their congregations. They,
who will constitute tomorrow's
Jewish community and who will
manage the great heritage of their
fathers, will be well prepared for
the task.
