Aieriem 5 i ask Prodiail eater CLIFTON AT/NUR CINCINNATI 10, OHIO The Detroit Jewish Chronicle and October 30, 1936 The Sabbath Day To the question, "Is it true that the Pope changed the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday?" A Catholic authority answers: The observance of the first day of the week as a day of worship and rest from work was carried out, we may say, unofficially for three centuries before the positive leg- islation of the Council of Elvira 300 A, D, to the same effect. This was done with the approbation of Pope Marcellinus. Your question implies mere arbitrary act on his part. Ile was merely restating the Christian viewpoint and its logi. cal fitness." AN OPEN LETTER TO THE JEWISH CITIZENS OF DETROIT We, the undersigned, representing the larg- est Jewish group serving upon the staff of any prosecuting attorney in the past, are in position to understand and estimate accurately the principle and high integrity and moral worth of our superior, DUNCAN C. McCREA, the man who so successfully tried and convicted eleven Black Legion members of murder. Chaim Pupko Here B'nai Moshe Men's Club Event Nov. 4 Representative of Yiddish Ency- clopedia Solicits Help of Detroit Jews Chaim Pupko, representative of the Dr. S. Dubnow Fund of Paris, which is issuing the 20 volume encyclopedia in Yiddiah, is a guest in Detroit and has already secured a number of subscribers for this important literary work. Mr. Pupko can be reached at the Mt. Royal Hotel, where he will remain for another two weeks. Two volumes of the 20 Yiddish encyclopedias have already ap- peared and the third volume will be published in December. It is planned by the Dubnow Fund to publish three volumes a year and to have the whole set completed within five years. The entire set of 20 volumes sells for $100. Mr. Pupko, who.is a Vilna edu- cator, is assisted in his work in Detroit by a committee represent- ing the Jewish National Workers' Alliance, consisting of Ben Rosen- thal, 13. M. Leiken, M. Chafetz, Morris Scheyer and Osher Gold- berg. The encyclopedia is an interest- ing work and is not only excellent- ly put up from the literary point of view but is also a very fine artistic creation. Temple High School Will See Photoplay At the assembly of the high school of Temple Beth El on Sun- day morning, Milton R. Frank, as- sistant director of the Exceptional Photoplaya Department of the U. S. Government, will present the musical movie play entitled "The Plow that Broke the Plains," a saga of the land of the great plains area of the United States. The play was written by Pare Lorentz who also directed the pro- duction. The musical score on American themes was composed by Virgil Thomson, a famous young American composer, and it was played by musicians from the Metropolitan Opera Association and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Alexander R. Smallens. While the production is to be especially presented to the stu- dents of the high school depart- ment, adults are invited to see the picture and to hear the accompany- ing talk which will be given in the Brown Memorial Chapel Sun- day morning at 10:30, We have no doubt that all the insinuation and evil that his opponent in the past few weeks has uttered against him are only so ex- pressed in order to promote his own political success, and emanate from a heart that is not deserving of the support of the Jewish community. And co, we do not hesitate to leave you to be the judges next Tuesday, and we are con- vinced that in all time to come, the Jews, whether rich or poor, will ever receive a dis- interested and friendly consideration from the man who is willing to stand for the principles which lie so dear to the heart of every Jewish man and woman. Although every Republican President in the past has lodged strong diplomatic protests to European governments guilty of persecuting the Jews, the New Deal and President Franklin D. Roosevelt have refused to take a single step against the brutal mistreatment of Jews in Germany. And yet the New Deal dares to accuse Governor Landon of being anti-Semitic! Governor Landon is the victim of the worst lie of the campaign — the Kansas hospital incident. The truth is that Governor Landon fired the hospital superintendent who wouldn't hire Jews — Governor Landon battled and defeated the Ku Klux Klan in Kansas — only Governor Landon has had the courage to denounce the Nazi Govern- ment for its persecution of the Jews. Keep These Facts in Mind When You Vote on Tuesday! Also keep in mind the fact that Republican Governor Frank D. Fitz- gerald has put the State of Michigan on a sound financial basis while meeting the State's obligations to the poor in full. Governor Fitzgerald's administration has been outstanding for its capability, sanity and honesty. He deserves your vote on Tuesday!
