PASTOR vs. LOUIS

By IRV KUPCINET

4

The record of Jewish fighters
against Joe Louis is hardly such
as to encourage any other Jew
to meet the brown bomber, but
we won't be at all surprised if
Louis' next opponent is Bob Pas-
tor, a former N. Y. U. football
star. Since ins professional debut
in February, 1935, Pastor has
lost but one start. His manager,
Jimmy Johnston, Jr., son of the
promoter of Madison Square Gar-
den, is boosting his protege for a
allot at Louis. And as things are
shaping up in the heavyweight
ranks he may get it pretty soon.
Last week at the New York Hip-
podrome Abie Feldman, also con-
sidered a prospect for a Louis
match, was beaten by Gunnar
Berlund of Finland, while Arturo
Godoy, Chilean hopeful, and Le-
roy Haynes fought to a draw. It
is hardly likely that Barlund will
be tossed into the same ring with
Louis after only two American

United Palestine Appeal, having
been informed of the announce-
ment with respect to the grant
of $100,000 by the Wool B'rith
to the Jewish National Fund for
the establishment of a settlement
to bear the name of B'nai B'rith
and its president, lion. Alfred
M. Cohen, said:
"I rejoice in the union of Pal-
estine and the 11 niti B'rith. This
should serve as an example not
only to other Jewish brotherhood
organizations in America, but to
other groups and bodies which
should link themselves with the
difficult but ultimately triumphant
cause of the New Palestine."
Dr. Wise added that it is doubly
joyous to greet the announcement
at this time. "The establishment
of the colony in the near future
is one more of the myriad proofs
that the work of rebuilding Pal-
estine is to go on despite disorder
and riots and assaults. Blessed
are they who claim the privilege,
as does the B'nai B'rith, of having
part in the rebuilding of the Jew-
ish National Home."
Louis Lipsky, American mem-
ber of the World Zionist Execu-
tive, said: "The announcement of
a grant of $100,000 by the B'nai

appearances. Negotiations for a
Pastor-Louis fight were almost
completed when they snagged
over money matters, but before
the year is over the Jewish boy
will be in there trading punches
with the Detroit shadow.
BATTLE OF HOUSTON
When the national convention
of the Amateur Athletic Union
meets at Houston on Dec. 4, 5
and 6, a sizzling battle will open
between Avery Brundage and
company and his opponents with-
in the organization. On the spot
because of his inept handling of
the American Olympic team and
his stupid tactics with regard to
Mrs. Jarrett and Jesse Owens,
Brundage will be in for plenty of
trouble. The lines are already
forming to oust not only Brund-
age but his whole clique, who
have impaired the prestige of the
A.A.U. in the eyes of American
sport lovers. Leading the fight
will be peppery Jack Rafferty,
president of the Gulf Association,
who was in the van of the battle
last year to keep the United States
out of the Berlin games.

B'rith to the Jewish National .
Fund for the purchase of a tract'
of land and the establishment on
it by the Keren Ilayesod of an
agricultural colony, is another,
substantial advance in the active
participation of this growing
fraternal order in the affairs of
the Jewish National Home. This
is the latest of a series of con-
tributions by the B'nal B'rith to
Palestine.
' "Under the leeelership of Al-
fred M. Cohen, th(2rpolicy of re-
conciliation with Zionist ideals and
cooperation in the building of
Palestine has been greatly accel-
erated. In the building up of the
extended Jewish Agency, the
B'nai B'rith is represented in a
secondary capacity, although from
its continued interest in Palestine,
it should have occupied a domi-
nant place in the structure of the
organization formed by Dr. Weitz-
mann and Louis Marshall. We
hope that the day has come for
the B'nai B'rith to be joined in
closer relations with the Zionist
movement at least within the
framework of the Extended Jew-
ish Agency."
Morris Rothenberg, chairman
of the American section of the
Jewish Agency for Palestine and
chairman of the administrative
committee of the Zionist Organi-
zation of America, said:
"The splendid action of the
B'nai B'rith is a truly fine ex-
ample of the growing understand-
ing on the part of all sections of
American Jewry as to the signifi-
cance of Palestine in the life of
the Jew. Coming as it does at a
time of struggle to defend the
hard-earned Jewish position, the
B'nai B'rith gift will hearten our
heroic pioneers and it will serve
as an evidence of the determina-
tion of the Jewish people to go
forward with the task of Pales-
tine's upbuilding regardless of all
obstacles."

EINSTEIN FAVORS
WORLD CONGRESS

(CONCLUDED FROM PAGE ONE)

—
man of the World Jewish Con-
gress executive committee. His
statement follows:
"I feel impelled to express my
regret over my one time negative
attitude toward the World Jewish
Congress. I now see that my fears
concerning it were without foun-
dation and that my instinct
chanced to deceive me. The re-
port that has been brought to me
makes upon me a wholly good
impression. One may hope that
out of this Congress • Institution
there may really grow step by
step a political organization rep-
resentative of and spokesman for
a majority of world Jewry. Such
organ of world Jewry would, in
my judgment. result in far more
benefit than hurt. The very fact
that this first Congress was more
or less effective, that it proceeded
with dignity and without a single
regrettable incident, points to the
possibility of continuing this work
and fortunately there is no com-
peting undertaking.
"One may, therefore, hope that
the Jewish people, as far as it
deserves this name, will gradually
accustom itself to regard this
institution as its representative
political organ. This great under-
taking which to me at the outset
seemed doubtful, it was very
meritorious in you to have dared
to undertake."
