Coughlin Favors Fascism as
Choice Against Far-
mer-Labor Rule

It 0 M E (WNS) — Warning
Italian Jews that unless they dis-
sociated themselves f r o at the
World Jewish Congress and "from
every connection with Jews in
Russia, France and Spain" anti-
Semitism would become an im-
portant factor in Italy, Roberto
Farinacci, former secretary of the
Fascist party, assailed "the sub-
versive influence of Jews" on Eu-
ropean governments in an editorial
in Regime Fascista, official Fascist
organ. Farinacci, who is member
of the Fascist Grand Council, de-
clared that from the monopoly en-
joyed under the dictatorship in
Bolshevist Russia, to the preva-
lence it has achieved in the Bol-
shevist government of France, the
subversive influence of Jews is
very evident as the cause of exist-
ing disorders."
Employing an anti-Semitic tone
that has recently been heard with
increasing frequency in Italy,
Farinacci complained: "Interna-
tional Jewry is anti-Fascist. Never
has a Jew uttered a word of ad-
miration or gratitude for Fascism.
On the contrary, moral and ma-
terial aid is given by Jews to the
popular front in France, to the
Reds in Madrid and to the destroy-
era of churches under every social
order. International politics of
Jewry is being conducted contrary
to the interests of those people of
whom the Jews have been guests
and from whom they derive their
rights."

Four Leaders Arrested

t.

I

BERLIN (WNS) — The arrest
of four prominent Jewish leaders
on as yet undisclosed charges is be-
lieved to foreshadow the beginning
of the long expected new Nazi
drive against German J e w r y.
Those taken into custody were Dr.
Max Mussbaum, rabbi of the Ora-
nienburgeretrasse Synagogue, the
largest in Berlin; Dr. Franz Mey-
er, a prominent Zionist; Dr. Benno
Cohn, an official of the League of
Jewish Culture; and Dr. Emil B.
Cohn, Berlin rabbi. Although the
reasons for the arrests could not
be learned, it is believed the rabbis
were arrested because of alleged
criticism of the Nazi regime in
Rosh Hashonah sermons. There is
also cause to believe that the ar-
rests are connected with the re-
fusal of certain Jewish quarters to
accede to the demands of Hans
Hinkel, Nazi commissioner for
Jewish cultural activities.
Meanwhile the government took
three other steps directed against
the Jewish community. The Labor
Front announced that all Jewish
labor exchanges must end their ac-
tivities by Jan. 1, thus creating a
new difficulty for unemployed Jews
as well as Jewish employers. The
former would be unable to obtain
work because they are barred from
the Nazi Labor Front, while the
latter would be forced to obtain
employees from the State Labor
Exchanges, which provide only
Aryan workers. At the same time
all Jewish institutions and private
families, including the Warburgs
and the Rothschilds, were instruct-
ed to open their private archives to
Nazi students of the Jewish ques-
tion. Elimination of Jews from the
retail drug business was also an-
nounced when Jewish druggists
were given until Oct. 1 to lease
their shops to Aryans.

NEW YORK. — Leading rabbis
of 12 countries of the world,
headed by Chief Rabbi Joseph
Hertz of Great Britain, joined on
the eve of the Day of Atonement
in a solemn protest to civilized
conscience against the vilification
of Judaism and the Jewish people
at the recent Nazi gathering id
Nuremberg.
The protest was made public
by Dr. Stephen S. Wise, president
of the American Jewish Congress
and chairman of the executive
committee of the World Jewish
Congress, who was invited to sign
the statement. The other rabbis
include Chief Rabbi Israel Levi

Ehrenpreis of Stockholm; Chief
Rabbi Meir of Jerusalem, Chief
Rabbi Hevesi of Budapest, Chief

Chief Rabbi Littmann of Zurich.
The declaration, which was pre-

Herr Hitler, in his insatiable
of the Jew, is not con-
tent with merely robbing the
German Jew of his human
rights. He has now launched in
addition a campaign of fanatic
defamation against the whole of
Jewry throughout the world.
Herr Hitler lets loose wild
allegations about imagined Jew-
ish responsibility for, and lead•
ership in, the tragic conflict in
Spain—a land from which Jews
have been virtually absent since
1492. These grotesque and
baseless accusations are patent•

the passions of the mob against
the Jew; and are on consonance
with the method of propaganda
described in "Mein Kampf,"
where litre Hitler writes: "The

of the people easily succumb
to it, as they cannot believe it
possible that anyone should
have the shameless audacity to
invent such things. Even if the
clearest proof of its falsehood
be forthcoming, something of
the lie will nevertheless stick."

Jewish Committee's Reply

The charge that Adolf Hitler,
under the guise of attacking
Communion:, is actually making
an assault upon democracy and
world peace, was made by Dr.
Cyrus Adler, president of the
American Jewish Committee, and
Sol M. Stroock, chairman of Its
executive committee. Taking their
text from Hitler's "Mein Kampf"
that "propaganda must not serve
the objective truth, especially not
insofar as it might bring out
something favorable for the op-
ponent . . . but propaganda must
serve uninterruptedly its own pur-
pose," the statement of these Jew-
ish leaders branded official declar-

ANN ARBOR, Mich.—According
to statistics released by the Uni-
' varsity of Michigan, the local chap-
ter of Phi Beta Delta, national
Jewish social fraternity, led the 60
Michigan fraternities in scholar-
ship for the past year.
The 20 members of Phi Beta
Delta had a combined average of
82.8 per cent which closely ap-
proximates a "B" grade. Not only
was this the highest average
among the numerous fraternities,
but it was also the highest frater-
nity, record in the past 10 years.
Individual honors went to Mil-
ton London and Harry Montgomery
Nayer of Detroit, although the
grades of all the members were
consistently high.
Nor is Phi Beta Delta composted
of grinds. This fraternity placed
fifth in athletic competition last
year, which is quite an achieve.
ment in itself.
Phi Beta Delta has the further
distinction of being one of the few
fraternities in this country serv-
ing strictly kosher meals.
