furthering the Palestine music
movement and the Palestine
School of Music. Describing the
start of the Palestine school move-
ment Mr. Gabrilowitsch then
stated that a number of eminent
musicians were furthering the
cause of music in the Jewish set-
tlements and were creating a com-
mendable program. He said at
that time that he felt his appear-
ance at the recital• before the
Council was an excellent means
of raising a much desired sum for
this cause. Mr. Gabrilowitsch then
expressed the opinion that some-
thipg distinctly Jewish would one
day arise as a result of develop-
ments in Palestine and particu-
larly from the agricultural efforts
of a revivified and a redeemed
Jewish soil.

Urged Study of Hebrew

In another interview granted
to the Detroit Jewish Chronicle
and published in our issue of
April 22, 1932, Mr. Gabrilowitsch
again indicated his extreme inter-
est in the Jewish national move-
ment and urged that the study of
Hebrew should be propagated
widely. Ile told his interviewer,
Miss Ruth C. Brotman:

"I regret that in my child-
hood I did not study Hebrew
and now, at this period of my
life, you can understand it
would require very much of my
time—but to be able to read the
Book of Books, i. e., the Bible,
in Hebrew, an accomplishment
which has been denied me. It
is fine and poetical, this lan-
guage of our ancestors, and
you may say for me that I
consider it a privilege to know
Hebrew. I think young Jewish
people should be encouraged
to study the language."

Council of Women
In New Quarters

With the removal of the Na-
tioal Council of Jewish Women to
its new headquarters at 221 West
57th St., on Sept. 15, increased
activity in work for German refu-
gees will begin, according to an
announcement made by Sirs.
Maurice L. Goldman, chairman of
the executive committee. The
Council, formerly located at 625
Madison Ave., will occupy the en-
tire ninth floor of the building.
The New York section, of which
Mrs. Leo Sulsberger is the presi-
dent, is also housed in the same
building as the national office.
Mrs. Arthur Brin, of Minnea-
polis, president of the National
Council of Jewish Women, will
make a special visit to New York
in October it is announced. At
that time, formal opening of the
new headquarters will take place.
Mrs. Brin is also expected to be
the chief speaker at the New
England Regional Conference
which will be held in Providence
on Oct. 27 and 28.
Mrs. Julius Wolff, member of
the board of directors of the Na-
tional Council of Jewish Women,
and a vice-president of the New
York section, headi the German
Jewish refugee projects of the
Council. At its triennial conven-
tion in New Orleans in 1935, the
delegates voted to aid in the re-
training and reeducation of Ger-
man Jewish children and adults
now in this country. In line with
its traditional policy of assisting
young people financially, through
scholarships, Mrs. Golden an-
nounced that a number of young
man and women had been granted
scholarships through funds do-
nated by the nearly 200 sections
of the Council during the past
year.
The Council has a membership
of more than 40,000 women
throughout this country and Can-
ada. A campaign to secure an
additional 6,000 members will be
launched in January, Sirs. Gold-
man announced.

Trip to Bermuda

Four Detroit men in the Tol-
mich Agency of the Continental
Assurance Company located in the
National Bank Bldg., have suc-
cessfully qualified for the com-
pany's annual fall trip to Ber-
muda. They are Ben Tolmich,
Rabbi Harold N. Rosenthal, Phillip
L. Kanter, and Dr. Bernard Rose.
The qualification requires a paid-
for production of a minimum of
$250,000 life insurance during the
fiscal year. This is a fine record
in view of the fact that two of the
men, Rabbi Rosenthal, and Dr.
Rose, have been with the company
less than two years.
The Tolmich Agency, although
connected with the Continental
Assurance Company less than
three years, is consistently one of
the leading agencies of the com-
pany throughout the entire coun-
try. Ben Tolmich, general agent
for the Metropolitan Detroit area,
is well known in local life insur-
ance circles and is highly regarded

for his successful ability in the
training and developing of men.

The Continental Assurance
Company is one of the leading life
insurance companies in the middle
west. It is one of the few corn-
ponies to show an increase of life
insurance in force each year since
1929. In Michigan, the company
took third place for all companies
showing an increase of new ordin-
ary business Issued in 1935, as
compared to 1934.
David Berger has qualified for
the annual 1-2-0 Convention in
Chicago to be held at the Edge-
water Beach Hotel.

Mr. Gabrilowitsch also spoke to
his interviewer of Prof. S. Ros-
ovsky, famous Russian musician
who is devoting his time to the
study of monumental music of
the ancient Hebrews at the Pal-
estine Institute for Musical
Sciences. He lauded Prof. Ros-

Jews who live there are faced with
the alternative of starvation or

"We must act, and act at once.
It is literally true, as the Bible
