"ASPIRING FOR A BETTER YEAR"

RESOLVE

By KURT PEISER

Executive Director of the Jewish Welfare Federation

L'SHONO TOVO TIKOSEVU — and may the New Year
bring us the realization of many of our hopes—happier days—the
accomplishment of a finer life—and the development of a commu-
nity of which we shall be proud to be members.
Even while writing these words, I cannot help but recall the
tragic events which were pictured from time to time as dominating
the Jewish scene throughout the world.
These events have made us change our trend
of thinking. They have made us realize, as
never before, that we must be on our guard
to meet each situation with a clear head —
with dignity, and yet, effectively.
No need is quite as great as that which
has been shown to us by the Jews of Central
Europe. Consequently, we recognize our
obligation to assist the important overseas
relief organizations more generously and
more effectively.
Success on the part of Hitler and his
assistants, make us realize, also, the neces-
sity of developing within our own groups,
organizations that will take on the defense
of the good name of the Jew, as a direct obligation. Therefore—
we must meet generously and effectively this important demand.
Our youth is finding it increasingly difficult to find place-
ment—both in the professional and industrial world. As this situ-
ation becomes increasingly more difficult, it becomes incumbent
upon us to make possible ways and means of making employ-
ment available for them.
All these are our problems — they are with us and we must
face them graciously, honestly and as American Jews.
The coming year will demand much greater service than
ever before, service that will be asked by our local community—by
our national community—and by world Jewry. In order to meet
the conditions that are certain to appear, we must develop, within
our own group, a type of organization which will meet these situ-
ations in such a manner as to bring honor to the Jewish name and
find us united in action.
Possibly one manner in which, we may start to meet the vari-
ous problems most effectively may be the formation of a Jewish
Community Council, through which may be unified and co-ordinated
all the efforts of our Jewish community. Through this medium,
conflicts in fund-raising — in policy formation—and in the general
life of the community, will be avoided. And through it, the voice
of Detroit Jewry will be made known to its action body—the Jew-
ish Welfare Federation.
This is only one hope of many. A great many experiments
will probably be attempted by the Jews throughout the world. We
shall have our share of them. May I hope that such services as the
Jewish Welfare Federation of Detroit can render its own com-
munity, as well as all other communities that are affected by its
actions, will be forthcoming with a strength that will assist all
others in increasing the standards of Jewish life throughout the
world.
It is with this hope that I extend my sincere wishes for a much
happier New Year to Detroit Jewry in the year 5697.

THE DETROIT JEWISH CHRONICLE WISHES TO UTILIZE THIS

OCCASION TO CONGRATULATE THE JEWISH WELFARE FED-

ERATION OF DETROIT, THE DETROIT SERVICE GROUP, ALL

THEIR AFFILIATED AGENCIES AND TILE WORKERS IN THE

ALLIED JEWISH CAMPAIGN FOR THE PROGRESS ACHIEVED

DURING THE PAST YEAR. ESPECIALLY COMMENDABLE FOR

COMMUNITY SERVICE IS THE REALIZATION OF THE DREAM

FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW HOME FOR THE

AGED WHICH IS SOON TO BE READY FOR OCCUPANCY.

May the New Year Witness an Even Greater Response to Community Obligations, and the Strengthening

of the Hands of Those Who Are Devoting Themselves to the Cause of Human Welfare

A Happy New Year to All Jewry

.
