good in the big cities as a radio,
stage and screen star—in case
your memory needs refreshing.
Born on Feb. 14, he was a Valen-
tine's Day present to his parents,
Mayer and Emma Benny, who
lived' in Chicago before they re-
turned to the haberdashery busi-
ness in Waukegan. Jack is in a
picture, "The Big Broadcast of
1937," which \a so stars George
Burns and GraciQAllen, that well-
known Jewish-Isish combination
of film funsteri whose stock has
risen greatly `since the last Rosh
Hashonah edition of this paper
came off the press.
Edna Ferber, America's fore-
most women novelist and author
of "Come and Get It," now being
filmed by Samuel Goldwyn, was
working on the Milwaukee (Wis.)
Journal when she wrote and Fold
her first story. She continued as
a reporter, working on the Chi-
cago Tribune, where she started
her first novel, and has been a
famous literary figure ever since.
Sally Eilers likewise has had a
successful year in motion pictures.
This veteran actress continues to
enjoy great popularity with Amer-
ica's film fans.
A new five-year contract has
come to Mark Sandrich, brilliant
young RKO-Radio director, as a
reward for his outstanding record
in megaphoning RKO musical suc-
cesses and other feature produc-
tions. On the verge of receiving
his bachelor of science degree
from Columbia University, Sand-
rich, now 34, left college for a
motion picture career. He worked
his way upward steadily from
property man through the various
stages of assistant cameraman,
cameraman, assistanst director and
director. His directorial success
started with short comedies, and
he won the Motion Picture Acad-
emy of Arts and Sciences Award
for the best short subject with "So
This Is Harris." He directed three

J. Edward Bromberg was suffer-
ing from a case of "sea legs" in
the middle of a synthetic Sahara
Desert when he first encountered
the wonderland that is Holly-
wood. Three hours before he had
disembarked at Los Angeles har-
bor from ■ leisurely cruise from
New York. With his two trunks,
his suitcase, and a bundle of fenc-
ing foils under his arm, he was
driven to the Twentieth Century-
Fox studio, to which he recently
was placed under contract, and
started work immediately with
Ronald Colman, Victor McLaglen
ind Claudette Colbert (wife of
Dr. Joel Pressman) in ''Under
Two Flogs." His legs, still ac-
customed to two weeks on the
ocean, felt unsteady beneath him.
His usual calm and orderly life
was thrown off balance. and it
took him a while to get his bear-
ines. New York and other cities
remember Bromberg well as a
star of the Group Theater and
Eva Le Gallienne's Civic Reper-
tory Group and many famous
stage plays.
Another film comedian whose
star has ascended in the Holly-
wood heavens recently is Benny
(Zifkin) Baker, the pride of Lin-
coln and Omaha, Neb., and Roch-
ester, N. Y., where his theatrical
career started. He is now under
contract to Paramount Pictures.
Norma Shearer is very much in
the limelight now with her newest
picture, "Romeo and Juliet." She

Sam Heard has returned to New
York after completing his part in
Jack Benny's film, "The Big

have to remind you that Heard is

fame.

J. Levin Appeals for Payment of Dues to
Old Folks' Home

.
Jacob Levin, president of the Jewish Old Folks' Home,
has issued an appeal to all members to pay their dues during
the holidays and thereby to assure the comfort and happiness
of the aged people in the home. Mr. Levin's plea follows:
"On the occasion of the New Year the members of the
board of directors join with the aged residents of the Jewish
Old Folks' Home in extending to you and your family their
best wishes for a very happy New Year.
"Your generous contributions and hearty support during
the past years have enabled the board of the home to carry
on the good work for which this home is founded. Everything
that could be done to promote the comfort, the welfare and
the happiness of the old folks was accomplished within the
limits of our means.
"We make this plea to you to remember—

"Do not forsake us in our old age, cast us not off when
our strength faileth.
If your dues are not paid, please do no now.

"Permit us to express our gratitude and thanks in the
name of the officers and board of directors of our home, as
well as for those who cannot come to see you, those whom
your support will help—our old folks."

Carl Laemmle's retirement from
the film industry after the sale of
his Universal Pictures to a syndii-
cate was one of the news hjgh-
lights of recent months. caliA, is
now enjoying a well-earned -Nee-
tion.
Marking a quarter of a century
since his entrance into motion
pictures, Ernst Lubitsch, Para-
mount producer-director, was guest
of honor at a party given at the
studio recently. Mr. Lubitsch',
colorful career as a theatrical
genius cannot be covered in just
a paragraph or two, however, so
we shall have to wait and tell you
more about him in a special ar-
ticle to me written soon.

but at last the rest of the civilized
world took up the fight, and
finally, years later, Captain Drey-
fus was vindicated and completely
reinstated in the French army.
Featured in the film will be the
celebrated "J'Accuse," the open
letter to the President of France
in which Zola accused several of-
ficers, witnesses against Dreyfus,
of being themselves guilty of the
espionage with which the Jewish
captain was charged.

Q. What is the origin of the
name Altschuler?-1, . A.
A. The name Altschul or Alt-
sculer is derived from the Alt-
Schul or Old Synagogue in Prague.
The earliest record of the name
dates back to 1302 in Prague. Fol-
lowing the expulsion of the Jews
in 1542 members of the family
scattered to various countries
throughout Europe and later came
to America.
