HOLLYWOOD, Calif.—Chron-
icling tfie highlights of the past
year in the doings of the scores of
Jewish personalities, some of them
prominent, others not so promi-
nent, in Hollywood, film capital of
the United States, is no easy task,
for the simple reason that the
celebrities to be mentioned in this
article are more or less in the
limelight all the year 'round. To
list their manifold accomplish-
ments in a year's time would there-
fore require more columns of
space than this newspaper could
afford to give. Sufficient news
has developed among the better-
known personalities of the Jewish
faith associated in one way or an-
other with the motion picture stu -
dios in Ilollywood during the past
month alone to provide more than
enough material for one article.

TALKING PICTURES'
TENTH ANNIVERSARY

Marking the tenth anniversary
of the introduction of talking mo-
tion pictures. Jack L. Warner,
vice-president in charge of produc-
tion at Warner Bros.' Studio in
Burbank, Calif.; Hal B. Wallis,
Moving, Packing and
studio manager; Major N. Levin-
son and a group of Warner Bros.
Storage
executives gathered in August of
this year in a projection room and
heard again the music of the first

sound effects. This was "Don
Juan," with John Barrymore.
ANN ARBOR, MICH.
"Don Juan" was not the first
talking picture. That honor is
held by "The Jazz Singer." Al
Jolson spoke six words in that film ,
saying, "How did you like that ,
mama?" and sang a song.
... GREETINGS ...
Commenting on the tenth anni-
versary of talking pictures, Jack
L. Warner said to us, after coming
out of the projection room (while
in a theater a few miles away ca-
pacity audiences were enjoying
"Anthony Adverse"): "It's a far
cry from 'Don Juan,' which was
the first motion picture to utilize
Vitaphone 10 years ago, to 'An-
thony Adverse.' Yet we are still

An Appeal for Immediate Payment on Pledges to
Recent Campaign

- SEASON'S GREETINGS AND BEST WISHES

Eugene Beque

By HENRY WINEMAN

Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Jewish Welfare
Federation of Detroit and Chairman of the Special Gifts
Division in the 1936 Allied Jewish Campaign

The present High Holy Day season will more
than ever make the demand for Jews to dedicate
themselves to the protection of our weaker breth-
ren, the comforting of our oppressed fellow Jews,
the training of our young people for trades and pro-
fessions, the education of
our children and the
healing of our sick.
In order that such a
!i
broad program may be
carried out, we must
now with a far greater
sense of obligation than
in the past, adhere to the
custom of the most sol-
emn period of the year,
which begins at Rosh
Hashonah, to make good
our obligations in Jewish
community efforts.
On behalf of op-
pressed Jewry in Europe
as well as those who de-
pend upon our commun-
ity's projects for the con-
tinuation of our recrea-
tional and educational
efforts, I call upon Detroit Jews to make immediate
payments on the pledges they made to the Allied
Jewish Campaign. Without the gathering of all
the moneys that have been pledged to the campaign
it will be impossible for us to carry through the pro-
gram of the work we have undertaken.
One of the first obligations in the present Holy
Day period should be to fulfill our pledges to our
fellow Jews. I hope that the New Year will be
ushered in by Detroit Jews in such a spirit of nobility
and liberality.
I wish to take this opportunity to thank my
fellow Jews in Detroit for their co-operation in all
recent drives and to extend to them my best wishes
for a very happy News Year.
