BOYCOTT PROCLAMATION ISSUED
BY ANTI-NAZI LEAGUE ON THE
OCCASION OF HIGH HOLY DAYS
Samuel Untermeyer Makes Plea for "One Million Cham-
pions of Liberty to Join Our Movement"; Urges
Intensification of Anti-Hitler Movement.
With the publication of a High
Holiday boycott proclamation for
the coming Holy Days, the Non-
Sectarian Anti-Nazi League of
which Samuel Untermyer is presi-
dent, once more issues a call for
"one million champions of liberty
to join our movement."
The proclamation which the
league will endeavor to post in
every synagogue in the United
States is issued in the name of
freedom and justice and urges the
American Jew not to make the
fatal error that the German Jew
made.
"If they allow Hitler to go un-
challenged," it reads, "if they do
not fight his agents and propa-
ganda in the United States, if
they do not join hands with all
the liberal forces that are fighting
to destroy the Hitler regime, then
there is every likelihood that the
Nazi reaction will sweep the world
and with the victory of Nazism
will come the doom of American
Jewry."
Recount, Tragedies
The proclamation recounts the
tragic results of the world-wide
brown network of the Nazi Min-
istry of Propaganda. In Poland,
as a result of an anti-Semitic wave
of terror that places the 3,500,000
Polish Jews in a desperate and
dangerous plight. The same holds
true for Rumania, Austria, and
Hungary. Even in Palestine a
large measure of the blame for
the murderous attacks of the
Arabs can be laid to Nazi influ-
ence.
This brown network has not left
the United States untouched. The
McCormack Committee has estab-
lished the fact that the Nazis
spent ever $30,000,000 in this
country to spread the virus of
anti-Semitism. Many of the un-
disguised anti-Semitic . organiza-
tions now active throughout the
country have been obtaining di-
rect financial support from the
Nazis.
Warns of Fallacies
Aware that a solid union is
democracy and peace have always
been cherished by Israel. We call
upon the Jews of America to keep
the spirit of Israel forever alive
by combating the enemy of all
civilization—Nazi Germany."

Talmud Torah, a group of North
Bergen residents living in the im-
mediate vicinity have filed a peti-
tion with the town authorities de-
manding the immediate removal of
the Talmud Torah as "the center
of a public nuisance and a menace
to a respectable neighborhood."
Fifty residents have signed the
petition. Abraham Rachline, a trus-
tee of the Talmud Torah, denied
the charges and called the action
"prejudiced and discriminating."
There have been a few parties, but
none boisterous, in the three years
since the Talmud Torah was
opened, he said, adding that the
noise referred to was the chant-
ing of the cantor and the audible
prayer of the worshipers. A num-
ber of Jewish residents also signed
the petition, claiming that the
Talmud Torah students were "too
fresh."
In a hearing on the petition at
the city hall the protestants
charged that "Socialism" is being
taught in the Talmud Torah. Da-
vid Goldberg. a teacher at the
school , demanded a full investiga-
tion, asserting that Nazi influence
was behind the charges.

plant Trees
Mrs. S. L. Kavanau, chairman
of the Jewish National Fund Corn-
mittee of Hadassah, reports a con-
tinued response to the appeal to
plant trees in Palestine. This
project has been undertaken by
the Jewish National Fund Corn-
mittee of America to replace the
trees which the Arabs have de-
stroyed in their campaign of ter-
rorism as a protest to the British
government against Jewish immi-
gration to Palestine.
Those interested in the welfare
of the Holy Land are urged to par-
ticipate in the movement to plant
a new tree for every one burned
or destroyed by the Arabs. The
value of reforestration in the re-
building of Palestine, or even for
the benefit of our own country is
an established fact. President
Roosevelt, while governor of New
York, was among the leaders of
the movement for reforestration
in that state.
Trees may simply be replanted
to replace those destroyed, or they
may be planted in honor or in
memory of auspicious occasions.
Birthdays, anniversaries, joyous
events may be commemorated. or
in time of bereavement, the plant-
ing of trees in honor of the de-
ceased may take the place of the
conventional offering of flowers or
fruit. A tree costs $1.60. A re-
ceipt is sent to the donor, and an
appropriate letter is written to
the person in whose honor the tree
is planted or, in case of bereave-
ment, to the members of his fam-
ily.
Trees planted this week are as
follows:
In memory of Mrs. Rachael
Steinberg, by Mr. and Mrs. Sam-
' uel Weissman, Dr. and Mrs. Philip
1 11. Broudo, Mr. and Mrs. Maurice
Landau and Frank Wetsman.
To replant a tree, by Mrs. Sey-
inour Frank.
In honor of her sister, Mrs.
Sarah Bernstein, who is recovering
from a serious illness, by Mrs.
!
Isaac Shetzer.
In memory of her sister-in-law,
Mrs. Nina Deutsch, by Mrs. Anna
B. Deutsch.
In honor of the eighth birthday
of Frederick Barnett, by Mr. and
Mrs. Aaron Friedman.
Mrs. S. L. Kavanau, chairman of
Jewish National Fund Committee
of Iladassah, will be pleased to ex-
plain further details. Iler address
