The synagogue offi- cials did not make public either the names of the former or present owners of the pew seats. The total revenue from the gale of the 13 seats came to $2,800. Boy Scout Troop 23 to Meet at B'nai Moshe Beginning Sept. 14 The rise of Troop 23, Boy Scouts of America, from a medi- ocre troop to the ranks of the best Jewish troops in the city began in September 1934. Since then the troop has rapidly risen under the energetic leadership of Scout- master Merrill Goodman. In ad- dition Troop 23 has a capable staff of assistant scoutmasters and junior officers. Under this leadership a spirit has appeared among the boys which has led the troop on to victory in many fields of scouting and athletics. In 1933 when the troop consisted of young, un- trained boys they captured third place in the district rally. In 1935 and 1936 the troop participated in a city-wide camping event held at River Rouge Park known as the Camparee. Also in these years Troop 23 won the baseball cham- pionship of the La Salle District and also defeated the champions of another district. Still in 1935 and 1936 the troop participated in swimming meets held yearly at Durfee pool. Troop 23 has an active hiking program, going on overnight or day hikes at least once a month. Also, annually, the troop holds a Father and Son din- ner at which problems and coming events are discussed, Membership to Troop 23 is open to all Jewish boys over 12 years of age. Meetings will be held on Monday nights at 7, beginning Sept. 14, at B'nai Moshe Syna gogue, Lawrence at Dexter. OUR CANDIDATE—. Joint II. Schneider "When they appointed Henry A. Montgomery county clerk, the Wayne Circuit Judges showed that they kneW their business," said former Governor Alex J. Groes- beckin a statement issued this week. "Henry Montgomery took office without any strings attached to him whatsoever. He went in to fill a vacancy, and had a clear field before him. "County Clerk Montgomery had no political debts to pay off, no friends to reward, no lame duck relatives to take care of. His first move was to bring back twelve men and women who had long years of experience in the county clerk's office. Thomas L. McGoldrick, legal advisor in charge of Supreme Court appeals headed this list, which includes such tried and true public servants as Obe Bingham, Ed Bausch, Betty Ness, Walter Buhl. "In the highly important posi- tion of cashier, handling hundreds of thousands of dollars in mora- torium mortgage payments and other county funds he placed George Burns, vice president of the Peoples Wayne County Bank, a banker who sacrificed his per- sonal fortune voluntarily when the banks closed in 1933. "Henry Montgomery is not a politician. As editor of Detroit daily newspapers, originator of the Friend of the Court department and as a practicing attorney, he was thoroughly familiar with the needs of the county clerk'a office and exceptionally qualified to build up a staff of expert assistants. "I am confident that real service is, after all, the beat campaign argument, and that the vote for County Clerk Montgomery will prove that to be true."
