ern against the rising tide of
the Hitler menace.
Mr. Liepmann's life story is
pretty well known by this time.
He was born in Hamburg in
1905, in the harbor neighbor-
hood. His father was killed
in the war, his mother died of
:malnutrition and he was adopt-
ed by an uncle. He ran away
and, as a stowaway, came to
the United States, worked as
a gardener and waiter.
He
returned to Europe, had a var-
ied career at all sorts of trades
and later turned playwright.
He wrote several novels. When
Hitler came into power Liep-
mann was arrested, sent to a
concentration camp, managed
to escape and was taken
aboard an American oil tanker.
He wrote his "Murder—Made
in Germany" when he recover-
ed from the effects of his con-
centration camp illness after
hovering between
life and
death. He has lectured exten-
sively in this country, has been
invited to visit Russia and has
had charge of emigration work
in London.

A chance meeting of Adler, Rex
Weber and Gus Edwards in a New
York restaurant led to Adler's ap-
pearance with Edwards' act where
Cantor heard him. Cantor intro-
duced Adler to the late Florenz
Zeigfeld who spotted Adler in the
show, "Smiles."
Finally, Adler hit dull times. He
wrote Sid Grauman, Hollywood
impressario, under the name of a
Chicago theater manager, that Ad-

Who Remembers
Thirty Years Ago?
There are many men, scattered up and
down this continent who are retiring this
year on a comfortable income. They are
men who 30 years ago or thereabouts pur-
chased a Great-West Policy of Endow-

years they have had no investment wor-
ries and the amount guaranteed by their
investment is being paid in full, and their
families have been protected against their
possible loss.
They remomber 30 years ago, when they
decided upon this safer, surer plan of
saving.

Harry Weinberg, who has Just

told of the great suffering he wit-
nessed among the Jewish papule-

there and obtained first hand ac-
counts of the many pogroms and
assaults perpetrated upon defense-
less Jews by hands of hooligans.
He spoke of the grinding poverty
of more than half the Jewish popu-
lation in Poland, of the thousands
of consumptive children and adults.
Describes Plight in Poland
"The fear of death is plainly
written in the faces of thousands
of our people I saw in the streets
of Warsaw and other cities," said
Mr. Weinberg. "The Jews in Po-
land are facing complete economic
ruin through the boycott. Polish

these things to go on unchallenged.
We must rouse public opinion in
behalf of the hundreds of thou-
sands who suffer hunger, disease
and the fear of physical molesta-

to let up on the oppression of Jews
for the sake of the good opinion
of mankind if for no other reason.
"At the same time we must aid
Polish Jewry financially until there

a speedy and successful termina-

Additional Contributions
Mr. Weinberg made a similar
plea at the general membership
meeting held last Thursday at the
B'nai Moshe and the workers pres-
ent were deeply stirred by his
vivid description of the plight of
Polish Jewry.
New contributions were an-
nounced by the treasurer, Joseph
II. Ehrlich. The Berdichewer Pro-
gressive Beneficial Society donated
a generous sum from their treas-
ury and an additional amount was
raised at a special meeting held
by this organization to supplement
the support given from the treas-
ury.
l'isgah Lodge No. 31, B'nai
B'rith, sent in a contribution, as
did Montefiore Lodge No. 12, Free
Sons of Israel.
Individual contributors include
Ilarry Schlanger, Philip Slomovitz,
Ilarry L. Jackson, Dr. D. II. Eau-
man, Dr, Joseph M. Markel and
Mrs. Isaac Gilbert
Efforts to collect on outstanding
pledges are being continued in ad-
dition to the work of obtaining
new contributions. The drive com-
mittee is especially desirous of
sending another check to Poland
for the holidays and this could be
done easily if contributors who
owe on pledges would r e m i t
promptly. Checks should be made

treasurer, to 237 Gratiot Ave.
Rabbi Mende. Proposes "Sacri•
five Week" for Polish Relief
NEW YORK — Spokesmen for
various shades of Jewish Religious
thought in this country have Is-
sued appeals to American Jewry
to strain every nerve and mobilize
all resources of American Jewry
for the purpose of mitigating the
incredible distress and destitution
of the three and a half million
Jews of Poland and to support
vigorously the $1,000,000 drive of
the American Committee Appeal
for the Relief of Jews in Poland,
it was announced by Rabbi Max
J. Wohlgelerenter, chairman of
the synagogue committee of the
American Committee Appeal.
Among the outstanding spiritual
leaders of American Jewry who
have joined the drive is Dr. H.
Pereira Mendes, Rabbi Emeritus
of the Spanish-Portugees Congre-
gation of New Rork City. Among
the measures advocated by Dr.
Mendes is the institution of a "Sac-
rifice Week" among American
Jews for the relief of their per-
secuted brethren in Poland,
The National Council of Young
Israel pledged the support of its
entire membership for the $1,000,-
000 drive of the American Com-
mittee Appeal. Jacob 0. Zabron-
sky, president of the Young Israel,
assured the committee that Young
Israel will do everything within
its power to stimulate action and
to assist "you in raising the neces-
sary funds by contributing our ef-
forts and money during the High
Holy D ays ."
Rabbi Herbert S. Goldstein, one
of the moat distinguished spokes-
men for Orthodox Jewry. in his
letter of endorsement of the drive
deplores that "the great publicity
given to the German situation has
overshadowed the minds of our
people in regard to Poland. There
is more pressing need today, for
help to our brethren abroad, that
I know of, then that for the relief
of Jews in Poland."
A similar concern for the rele-
gation of the Polish problem to the
background by the anti-Semitic
outbreak in Germany is voiced by
Rabbi Israel H. Levinthal of the
Brooklyn Jewish Center.
