NEW YORK (WNS)—A new
international incident involving
Germany and the United States
is believed to be in the making
as an aftermath to the slugging
and beating of men and women
by the crew of the S. S. Bre-
men in an attempt to break up an
anti-Nazi demonstration. Scenes
of violence like those that oc-
curred just a year ago on the
same ship when the swastika was
pulled down were re-enacted
when 150 men and women sud-
denly unfurled banners bearing
such inscriptions as "Hands Off
Spain," "Stop Nazi War Move-
ment" and "Down with Nazi in-
tervention." A dozen girls in
white sweat shirts which bore in
red letters the words "End Nazi
War Movement," chaned them-
selves to the iron railing on the
promenade deck. When members
of the crew began beating up the
girls and some of the men in a
fashion reminiscent of a Nazi
concentration camp the entire
ship was thrown into an uproar.
Twelve persons, eight women and
four men, were arrested on char-
ges of disorderly conduct and
then released on bail pending a
hearing. Eye-witnesses of the
riot reported that the German
seamen were unusually brutal.

last month the Rev. Coughlin chose to speak of "the Rothschilds and the Europeans"

Can there be anything more inspiring to hate than this statement which so
clearly implies that Jewish bankers are depriving the people of this country of their
natural possessions? It is no wonder that Edward Angly, correspondent for the New
York Herald-Tribune at this convention, wrote to his paper:
"If there was an anti-Semitic sentiment among the perspiring thousands,
he (Father Coughlin) got at that, too, for whenever he spoke of the international
bankers, to whom he said the New Deal had sold out the birthright of future
Americana, the only ones he mentioned by name were the Rothschilds."
But Father Coughlin insists he is no an anti - Semite, in the face of overwhelm-
ing evidence that he has been spreading venom against our people whenever he had
occasion to speak of "international bankers!"
On March 11, 1935, Father Coughlin overwhelmed us with his kindness and his

When you take into consideration the claim of notorious anti-Semites in this

clared by Dr. John S. Perry of
the psychiatric department of St.
Elizabeth's Hospital, Washing-
ton, in an address to the conven-
tion of the National Negro Medi-
cal Association.

Father Coughlin's sincerity is being questioned because of
his unjustified emphasis on Jewish bankers and financiers as the
evil of international finance. Jewish as well as non-Jewish ob-
servers of the American scene trying to interpret Father Cough-
lin's rebuttal to General Ilugh Johnson in a sober and dispassion-
ate way are at a loss to understand why Father Coughlin,
launched an attack against Baruch, Warburg, Kuhn, Loeb &
Co., the Rothschilds and Lazare Freres, and thus laid himself
open to the charge of anti-Semitism. Father Coughlin, well-
versed in economic and financial affairs, was surely acquainted
with the records, records which conclusively explode the legend
of the pre-eminence of Jewish banking houses in international
loans and banking.
The annual compilation, "American Underwriting Houses
and Their Issues," reveals that the proportion of Jewish houses
(any corporation over 6 per cent of whose directors were Jews
was counted as Jewish) to all of those engaged in public financ-
ing during the years 1930-1933 was never more than eight per
cent. In 1932 this proportion was as low as one-half of one
per cent of the total number of underwriting houses.
As for international loans and banking, there are six
leading "Jewish" houses in the United States. During the years
1925 to 1928, these "Jewish" houses participated in -the under-
writing of international loans to the amount of $1,133,100,000.
During this same period the six leading "non-Jewish" under-
writing houses for foreign loans participated in loans amounting

If Father Coughlin wants us to take his protestations in
favor of the Jews seriously, if he wants us to believe that his
campaign for social justice is entirely free of racial prejudice,
if he wants us to judge him on the intrinsic merits of the pro-
gram of the Social Justice Union, he will have to admit publicly
that he has erred and that his charges against Jewish inter-
national bankers are grossly exaggerated and entirely out of
proportion with the true state of affairs.

These facts speak for themselves. Father Coughlin,
to whom we mailed every issue of The Detroit Jewish
Chronicle in which reference was at any time made to
him, did not deem it important to make reply to the
above statement. But now he comes to us, through his
publication, and wants us to believe that he is not an
anti-Semite!
In his current reply Father Coughlin resorts to an
old trick of Jew-baiters. He speaks of different classes
of Jews—of upper and lower stratas. He wants the so-
called former to be courageous and to condemn the so-
called latter. But once again he is kind to us. He tells us
—saintly man that he is!—that "the better class Jew"
outnumbers the former ("the lower strata Jew"). And
with this type of "social justice" Father Coughlin wants
us to believe that he has no hates nor prejudices and that
he is in no sense a breeder of bigotry. (Have you ever
heard of a bigot admitting that he hates and that he is a
destroyer of human values?).
Hitler also speaks that way. The Jews are per-
secuting him. He is the victim of Jewish conspirators.
And if Father Coughlin is not an anti-Semite then we
must be persecuting him!
Father Coughlin never speaks in terms of lower
strata and upper strata Catholics and Protestants. But he
has the audacity to visualize stratas for us and thus to
add insult to injury.
Father Coughlin's recent radio challenge to the
Jews to state whether they believed in "Christian" prin-
ciples of brotherly love brought forth resentment on the

Monsignor John A. Ryan of the Catholic University
of America:

"Father Coughlin's reference to 'an eye for an eye and a
tooth for a tooth' is bad exegesis, bad history and bad argument. It
is unjust to Jews and unfortunate in the political campaign. "

The Rev. R. A. McGowan, assistant director, Depart-
ment of Social Action, National Catholic Welfare Con-
ference:

"Father Coughlin forgets the remarkable work for economic
justice done by the Central Conference of American Rabbis during
the past 15 years that I know of. The Social Action Department
of the National Catholic Welfare Conference has joined with them
on at least a dozen occasions during that period in pleas for social
justice, the most far reaching being the statement issued shortly after

public housing, social insurance, shorter hours and retention of
the 1929 crash, which advocated Public works, slum clearance and
wage rates, a democratic guidance of American economic life In
which labor would share, and wide distribution of wealth and income.'

Dr. Frank Gavin, professor of Church History at Gen-
eral Theological Seminary, New York City:

"It is rather late in history for Father Coughlin to read the
Jews a lesson in 'Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.' The Jews
were the first to teach that very principle. Let Father Coughlin
read his Bible, Leviticus 19:18 and St. Luke X:26-28, This instruc-
tion of Judaism was the reason why Christ's faith and Christ's people
brought a new measure of hope to humanity and became the divine
inspiration of the Catholic Church. The 'eye for an eye' doctrine
was thoroughly repudiated by the Jews very early in their history,
much sooner in fact than by any other people, for every nation with-
out exception followed that barbarous doctrine in the slow upward
climb toward so-called civilization.
"No good purpose can be served by raising a 'bogey man,'
namely, the Jew, and then charging him impliedly and almost explic-
itly with being responsible for the Augean stables in present-day
world affairs. It reminds one of the doctrine, 'neutrality in prin-
ciple,' while shipping instruments of slaughter to both sides. We need
no 'Inquisition' to challenge Jews to accept a principle which they
first taught the world and which is taught in every Jewish synagogue
In the world. I feel certain that the highly respected and enlightened
church to which Father Coughlin belongs would not approve such
a misleading and sorrow-laden statement as he has made."

Dr. Louis Finkelstein, professor of Theology at the
Jewish Theological Seminary of America:

"Father Coughlin's so-called 'Challenge to the Jew In Adterlea'
would be an amazing statement if uttered ')), the moat illiterate lay-
man. It becomes incredible in the mouth of a representative of a
great church, Certainly, Father .Coughlin must have found time to
read the Book of Leviticus which in part of the Hebrew Scriptures,
and in that event, he must know that the commandment, 'Love thy
neighbor as thyself,' is found in Leviticus, 19:18. Even one who
has not read the Hebrew Scriptures must recognize from the state-
ment in the New Testament that Jesus, who quotes this verse as the
first of the commandments, meant that it was the first of the com-
mandments of God to the Jews. In this the founder of Christianity
agreed entirely with the foremost authority of the Talmud, Rabbi
Akiba, who also said of this verse that it is the most inclusive prin-
ciple in the whole of the Scriptures. The great Jewish teacher,
Ilillel, a contemporary of Jesus, paraphrased it in the rule, 'What
is hateful to you, do not to your neighbor.' lie said that this was
the whole of the law, all the rest was commentary.
"Everyone who has ever studied the Talmud knows that the
rule, 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth,' was interpreted
to mean that whoever has suffered a physical injury must be paid
the full value of that injury. Does Father Coughlin, who as a mem-
ber of the Catholic Church certainly recognizes the divine revela-
tion of the Book of Exodus as part of the Old Testament, accept
this interpretation or does he Impute to God a desire for brutal ven-
geance? The principle of the 'Brotherhood of Man' is fundamental
to Christianity but it is also fundamental to Judaism. It was • Jew-
ish prophet, Malachi (2:10), who called out, 'Have we not all one
father? Bath not one God created us?'
"There is no need for challenging the Jew either on his love
for his fellowman or on his loyalty to the American flag. Two thou-
sand years of persecution have not embittered the Jew against those
who have maligned him. In his daily prayers he beseeches God's
mercy for all people, and the most sacred prayers on the High Holy
Days are petitions for God's mercy on all mankind. The loyalty of
the Jew to the American flag is beyond doubt. Others may love
America merely as the country of their birth. The Jew not only
loves America but he reveres her as the altered embodiment of the
fundamental principle announced by his ancestors, the Prophets, to
the world that 'All men are made in God's image.'"

These statements speak .volumes in condemnation
of Father Coughlin's un-Christiap methods of attacking
a defenseless people.
Nevertheless, we are pleased to read his commit-
ment that he is not an anti-Semite. He can prove it from
now on by changing his tactics, by practicing the true
precepts of his religion which calls for brotherly love and
human kindness. We do not fear criticism, and we would
welcome the truth about us, but we plead against exag-
geration and falsehood.
Your future actions, Father Coughlin, will prove
whether or not you affiliate yourself with the world's
bigots and anti-Semites or whether you are to be classed
among the great teachers of religion who are on the side
of justice to all men and against all sorts of prejudices
and hatreds.
