Six years ago, Adolph Goutman, then a boy of 14, came to this country from a small town in Rus- sia. The one thing that out- weighed all others in his mind was the desire to be- come a great artist. Today, Adolph is on the road leading to realization of that ambition. Adolph entered the Art School of the Jewish Com- munity Center and studied there for two year s. II i a instructors were impressed with his talent and Mrs. David B. Werbe, chair- man of the Cen- A. Goutman ter Art School committee, became interested in him. Through the efforts of Mrs. Werbe, who is an alumnus of the Chicago Institute of Fine Arts, and through his own ability, Adolph was granted a scholarship at the Chicago Institute. This is the first time in the history of the school that a scholarship has ever been granted to a first year student. This year, at the annual exhibi- tion of the student's work in the galleries of the Institute, which is devoted usually to the works of the third and fourth year students, Adolph was well represented with his life drawings and paintings. Because of his unusually high standing his name has been in- eluded with that of the graduates of the school in the annual "hon- orary list." At the end of the school year this summer, Adolph, who was in competition with the rest of the students, was awarded the one and only scholarship from the Walter S. and Esther J. Isaacs Fund. This scholarship will enable him to spend another year at the In- stitute. Boris Anisfelt, internationally known painter and professor of painting at the Chicago Institute, became interested in Adolph's work, and although he teaches only the third and fourth year stu- dents, Adolph will be his student Mr. and Mrs. Morris Robinson when he returns in September. announce the Bar Mitzvah of their son, Samuel Louis, on Sat- urday morning, Aug. 15, at Con- gregation Shaarey Zedek.
