Conscientious Objection
Even ethical matters evidently are rela-
tive. In Palestine Jews protest that they
-'do not desire Englishmen to shed their
blood in defense of Jewish colonies, and
therefore demand mobilization of young
Jews for self-defense. In Germany Jews
have protested against being barred from
army service. But in this country, Reform
rabbis, meeting in convention recently at
Cape May, N. J., declared that "conscien-
tious objection to military service is in ac-
cordance with the highest interpretation
of Judaism,"and called upon the United
States Government to grant Jewish reli-
gious conscientious objectors to war the
same exemption from military service as
has long been granted to members of the
Society of Friends and similar religious
organizations."
More than once, and this time too, we
have admired the "spunk" of Reform rab-
bis. It takes a great deal of "guts," to
resort to the vernacular, to make such
pleas to our government and to ask for
exemptive rules for our conscientious ob-
jectors. But more than once we have felt
that these rabbis were wrong, and we be-
lieve that they are especially wrong at this
time. In the first place, they had no busi-
ness to speak for the entire Jewish peo-
ple. Their resolution makes a plea as if
it were expressing all-Jewish opinion.
Secondly, there is danger in this action
because it is so easy to prove that too
many pages in Jewish history are replete
with war cries sounded by our ancestors
against their adversaries.
Had the Central Conference of Ameri-
can Rabbis adopted a resolution which
would in strong terms advocate a pacifistic
attitude on the part of our government
and would in general urge that conscien-
tious objectors of all religious denomina-
tions be granted exemptions during war,
we would deem such action practical. But
the demand as incorporated in the Cape
May resolution appears to segregate Jews
as a group and to excuse them even from
self-defensive action in the event of war.
We are inclined to believe that the vast
majority of our people feels that we
should be prepared to share all responsi-
bilities of citizenship even if it should be
necessary to sacrifice our pacifism. It is
one thing to fight for peace, but it is an-
other matter to ask for special privileges
for JOVE on a questionable interpretation
of Judaism. We believe that the Central
Conference has erred at Cape May.
The New Zionist President
Dr. Stephtn S. Wise's selection as presi-
dent of the Zionist Organization of Amer-
ica will be welcomed by the Jews of this
country as an event that must bring much
good to the movement for Palestine's re-
construction as the Jewish National Home.
It is a source of great satisfaction to know
that his election is marked by a spirit of
unity, and that Morris Rothenberg, the
retiring president, remains a leading fac-
tor in the administration of the movement
in this country.
In a statement made in London, Dr.
Wise made it known that he is prepared
to devote himself wholeheartedly toward
the carrying into effect of numerous re-
forms, and to give of himself completely
for the advancement of Zionism. "I am
glad that all groups assented to adminis-
trative reforms, because radical reorgan-
ization is necessary," said Dr. Wise. add-
ing: "I will not be an honorary but a
real president I will give all the time
and strength at my disposal to the Zion-
ist cause. And I give assurance that mine
will be an uncompromising Zionist ad-
ministration not pro-Zionist or pro-Pal-
estine or pro-Agency, but Zionist." Ex-
pressing the hope that he will have the
,ipport of all groups, Dr. Wise declared
leis intention "to safeguard and strengthen
with maxignum support the Zionist ideal,
and to do everything in accordance with
the decision of the World Zionist Congress
held last summer in Lucerne, thus to
bring together all the different Zionist
factions in America into a united Zionist
organization which will transcend all
grou ps." Citing the experience of London
Zionists, Dr. Wise pointed out that "we
cannot afford to indulge in the luxury of
division, and that it is essential that we
have a broad and inspiring platform. I
shall do my utmost to win the masses of
American Jewry to the support of the
ideal and the practice of the Jewish Na-
tional Home in Palestine."
This i s a significant statement, and
those who know Dr. Wise's capacity for
work must realize that his pledge is tan-
tamoun t to certainty that we shall see

Continue Olympic Boycott!
Angriff, one of the leading Nazi organs,
has published an editorial call to all Nazis
to be prepared to act as hosts to guests
at the Olympic games. In its appeal to
"every German citizen" Angriff stated:
This Olympic Summer is a historic and un-
equaled opportunity to do away with all pre-
judices against the German nation, which is
no disturbingly capable. We must be more
charming that the Parisians, more easy-going
than the Viennese, more vivacious than the
Romans. more cosmopolitan than London and
more practical than New York.
The Nazi determination to capitalize on
the Olympics for the benefit of the Hitler
State is further expressed in the following
portion of an address delivered by Wal-
ther Funk, secretary of state in the Propa-
ganda Ministry, before the National Tour-
ist Association in Berlin:
The German hotelkeeper and the Ger-
man hotel employe, porter and chauffeur
represent in their dealings with foreigners
the National Socialist State. Under the di-
rection of the Propaganda Ministry there has
never before been developed a propaganda
campaign equal to that for the Olympic
Games. The principles of the propaganda are
furnished by the propaganda committee for
the Olympica group created by the Propa-
ganda Ministry.
The foreigner who comes to us shall
see the German people united under its leader,
Hitler. Tourism is an important weapon in
the struggle for the re-establishment of Ger-
many's world rank. Those who deal with
tourists have a significant political mission.
They must always be aware of the greatness
and significance of this mission and must
never forget that on them depends Germany's
reputation in the world.
It is clear that for the sake of props-
goads values persecution of Jews will
stop, a lively front will be presented and
the Nazis will be "charming," "easy-
going," "vivacious," "cosmopolitan," and
"practical."
But so far American public opinion has
known how to deal with such a front, and
the Olympic fund is short of its goal for
sending an American team to the Nazi
athletic fiasco. , Tradition for liberalism
continues to dominate the scene in this
country and it is possible that the Ameri-
can aggregation at the Berlin games will
be greatly curtailed. Unless Nazi funds
will be sent to cover the deficit, the cur-
tailment of the American team will be a
deserved rebuke to bigots. All libertar-
ians must continue the fight against the
Olympics by passing the word around not
to make any contributions to a fund which
will in the long run only serve as propa-
ganda material for Nazism.
A Mizrachi Founder Passes
The death in Haifa, Palestine, of Rabbi
Elias Inselbuch, formerly of Brooklyn,
serves to recall the early days of the
founding of the Mizrachi Orthodox Zion-
ist movement.
Rabbi Inselbuch stood in the vanguard
of pioneer Zionism, and together with
the late Rabbi Jacob Reines of Lida was
an organizer of Mizrachi. Throughout his
life he devoted himself wholeheartedly to
the cause of Israel's auto-emancipation,
and ended his days in the Land of Israel.
His name will be recorded among those in
the American rabbinate who gave their
best energies for the Jewish :- ..1ionai
cause.
To Become a Dictator—Be Lazy
Rudolph Hamich, plaintiff in a case in
a Vienna court charging a workman with
pocket-picking, said in the course of his
testimony: "Adolf Hitler was so lazy that
I parted company with him." The judge
had asked the witness how he lived and
he explained: "Nowadays, I live 1,y odd
jobs,•but there was a time when I did
much better. In 1909 and 1910 I was a
fellow-inmate of the almshouse for hard-
up workers in Briggetanau (a working-
class Vienna suburb) with Adolf Hitler,
and we entered a partnership. He painted
pictures and I peddled them around. He
made a specialty of Vienna views, Things
went well for a while, but then Hitler got
too lazy and did not give me enough pic-
tures, so I broke away from him and set
up on my own."
But while Hamich is totally unknown
and just one of the mass of humanity,
Hitler is dictator of Germany. The moral
might be: To become a dictator, be lazy.
The Fruits of Anti-Semitism
A report from Berlin states that the
Reichsvertretung der deutschen Juden has
found it necessary to start additional
courses in Hebrew as a result of the in-
tense desire among German/Jews to know
the language. It is stated that more than
14,000 adults and young people are al-
ready enrolled in these classes.
It is evident that anti-Semitism not only
arouses race consciousness but also in-
creases interest in their own culture among
Jews affected by persecutions. But the
surprising thing is that although these ef-
fects of Jew-baiting are known throughout
the world they do not appear to influence
those communities where such ..prejudice
is only slightly felt.
The question must be asked: is this due
to our extreme confidence in the eventual
triumph of liberal principles, or is it in-
difference?

The other day I received an envelope ad-
dressed in red ink, marked "personal and im-
portant." When I get a letter marked like that
I know that it is personal to the other fellow and
important to him, but never to me. This one I
found had no name, either inside or outside. It
was postmarked "Escanaba, Michigan." I learn
from the atlas that there are more than 13,000
persons in that town, so it would be quite a job
to find the writer.
It is an eight-page folder printed on brown
paper. Across the top is the statement "THIS
IS WORTH READING," and then comes the
heading: PROTOCOLS of the meetings of the
LEARNED ELDERS OF ZION.
Then comes the text, interspersed with run-
ning comments of some person unknown, and at
the bottom of the last page I learn that the
price of the document is $.50. From by ex-
perience with printing jobs, I should assume
that in quantities the folder can be produced for
half a cent. So you see somebody is making
a living. Who it is, we are not told. Nowhere
on the document is the name of any printer or
publisher.
Evidently the thing is being peddled around
by some secret organization; and it happens
that just at the time it came to me there burst
out in the newspapers an account of a nightmare
organization known as the "Black Legion," which
had just murdered a man for attempting to
withdraw from it. There are said to be about
135,000 members of this Black Legion in the
State of Michigan, and undoubtedly there are
some of them among the 13,000 inhabitants of
Escanaba, Michigan.

The cultural work of the Joint
Distribution Committee in Poland
is but a small part of its general
activities. There is a rooted opin-
ion that bread for the poor, or aid
for the store-keeper, must come
`-tore the education of the child.
But Jewish schools in Poland, in
addition to their educational func-
tions, performs the function of
feeding and clothing the children.
Customarily children consider
school as a burden and they are
happy when school closes. In Po-
land it is different. The Jewish
children remain at school much
longer than school regulations
prescribe. The child comes from a
poor home, either in a basement,
or ina garret. Often eight persons
sleep in one room. A single bed
for • child is considered a luxury,
and not everyone can afford such
luxuries. During the winter the
dwellings remain unheated. For a
child as poor as this, the permis-
sion to remain in a school that has
light, clean rooms is a great privi-
lege. The child is also fed at school.
Very often the J. D. C. money as-
signed to • school is used directly
to feed the children. Local com-
mittees in Poland are also con-
cerned with providing food for the
children. It is cusomary too for
wealthy high school students to
send in food for the poor children
in the elementary public schools.
Each bite of bread is actually di-
vided. It often happens, that •
poor child has not the heart to eat
the entire roll given to him and
hide, one-half of it to bring home
to his sick mother.
Then too, a child that goes to
school is under the medical super-
vision of the school doctor. The
number of anemic tubercular chil-
dren among the Jews is very large.
Strictly
Confidential
American standards, but one must
know the situation in Poland in
order to understand why the Jews
in Poland must maintain their own
schools. I will attempt to clarify
this matter.
There is a law in Poland to pro-
vide free education for all chil-
dren. Parents are fined for keep-
ing their children out of school.
School is compulsory, but actually
there arc a million children in Po-
land, who can't be accommodated
in the available schools because of
the lack of both buildings and
money. It is therefore quite nat-
ural that large numbers of Polish
Catholic children cannot be accom-
modated in the schools and it
stands to reason that Jewish chil-
dren will certainly Be affected by
these difficulties.
Besides, the Polish schools are
Catholic. And it is rather difficult
to house non-Jewish and Jewish
children under one roof, especially
in the smaller towns. The Jews in
Poland are religious and observant
to a great extent. Parents do not
wish to educate their children in
the Polish Catholic spirit, but
rather to educate them so that
they will gain an understanding of
Jewish history and become more
closely bound to Jewry.
Jewish Teachers Displaced
For a time the Polish govern-
ment established the so-called Jew-
ish Sabbath Schools. These schools
were not Catholic, being wholly &R-
eigned to Jews. The language used
was Polish, but the schools were
closed on Saturdays. Jewish reli-
gious teachings were included in
the curriculum. The teachers were
Jews.
Many Jews were not very happy
over these schools because neither
Yiddish nor Hebrew was taught.
Judaism received very little at-
tention. Nevertheless the Jewish
masses gladly sent their children
to these schools because they were
maintained by the government and
were tuition free.
People believed that these schools
would grow. But the reality;
proved otherwise. The schools are
decreasing. The Jewish teachers ,
are being replaced by Polish I
Catholic teachers.
Years ago the idea prevailed
that if the Jews would assimilate,
their political status would Im-
prove greatly. Now It Is obvious
that great sections of Polish so-
ciety are opposed to this idea. Tbel
MIA. TEEN TO NEXT PAESI I
the Jews are to blame for our present-day
troubles. The Jews have their faults, like the
other races and groups of human beings have.
And like all other races and groups of human
beings, they have their heroes and their saints,
and their great minds. I mention Albert EM-
stein, and I might mention a hundred others.
There are Jewish bankers, of Course, but
they are not a bit more greedy than the Gentile
bankers, and if anybody doubts that, let him
read the book "Upton Sinclair Presents William
Fox."
It is true that there are Jews in the New
Deal administration, and maybe some of them
are giving the president bad advice. But they
are not giving any worse advice than many Gen-
tiles whom I could name.
Neither is it true that our troubles are all
due to the Negroes or to the Catholics or to
the Communists. The Negroes were brought to
America against their will, and they are not to
blame for what has been done to them.
Must Establish Justice and Tell Truth
The Catholic doctrine of a fixed revela-
tion seems to me a greater barrier to human
progress, but we can overcome that barrier by
rational argument, and we do not have to re-
sort to tarring and feathering, nor to circulating
anonymous lies.
Likewise, I think that the Communist idea
of a dictatorship in America is a blunder. But the
way to meet that is a very simple one—by es-
tablishing justice in America, and telling the
truth while we are doing it.
So much for race prejudice and religious
prejudice. People are born Jews and they cannot
help it. Many are born Catholics and it is hard
for them to help that. The thing to do is to
tell them the facts, and explain our troubles,
and lead people's minds out of darkness and
confusion.
Take Father Coughlin, for example. Ile is
not confused because he is a Catholic, but be-
cause the American people are confused and do
not understand the part that our money system
plays in perpetuating poverty. I see that Father
Coughlin is now out against Roosevent, saying
that Roosevelt's policies are leading to infla-
tion and Socialism. And yet, Father Coughlin
himself has been demanding inflation ever since
he began talking over the radio! I am afraid
Father Coughlin is going to be rather lonely
during this election campaign!
Also, I see that Professor Moley has come
out against the President and his policies, and in
favor of big business and its American Liberty
League. I do not happen to know whether Ray-
mond Moley is a Jew, but I hope not, because
I wan to jump on him hard! In my book telling
the story of the EPIC campaign in California,
I said that Professor Moley in his comments
on EPIC had shown himself "at once ignorant
and bigoted." I congratulate President Roose-
vent upon having dispensed with the advice of
Professor , Moley. If we can get all the reac-
tionary minds out of the administration, we may
see the New Deal really beginning to count for
something.

The Golden Age of American Culture
By FANNIE HURST
(Copyright, 1936, 8. A. F. 8 )
I get a great deal of pain
from reading what Zionist
leaders say from time to time
about the tragic events in Pal-
estine.
They make a sound as of
saber-rattlers. Certainly they
are not behaving like the sons
of prophets when they say tru-
culently: "Nothing can stop us
in Palestine. Immigration into
Palestine shall go on. We shall
continue to acquire land in Pal-
estine. The Balfour Declara-
tion shall be fulfilled."
This is not merely an af-
front to peace in Palestine.
Their brash words serve as a
rallying cry, and only several
weeks ago 500 Jews of Poland
fared forth at one time for a
pilgrimage to Jerusalem. One
thinks of the rapt children of
the crusades who at the call of
priests and monks took up the
road to Jerusalem to redeem
the holy sepulchre, and came
only to death.
Isn't it about time to ask:
"Where are we going? And is
it homeland where the return-
ing wanderer trembles under
the shadow of guns? And by
what means can we have peace,
