CHAMPION OF RUSSIAN JEWRY

vision he could never have risen
to the greatness he achieved In
the world of letters and in the
ranks of fighters for Justice for
all men.
Maxim Gorki—"Maxim the Bit-
ter One"—born Alexey Maximo-
vitch Peskof, is being placed by
some on a. par with other Rus-
sian geniuses of the peasant
class, and especially with Count
Leo Tolstoy, as the ranking ex-
ponents of justice for the Jew.
Gorki's record, however, is per-
haps the longest of all modern
defenders of the downtrodden. In
the darkest days of Tzarist op-
pressions, he let his voice he
heard in protest against anti-
Semitism. And his voice did not
die down even with the rise to
power of the Soviets. His whole-
hearted afliliation with the Com-
munist Party did not blind him
to possible injustices even under
the new regime. When the Yev-
sektsia — the ill-reputed Jewish
inaction of the Communist Party
—raised objections to the Ha-
bimah Theater because its med-
ium of expression was Hebrew,
it was Gorki who came to the
defense of the great artists' en-
terprise. It was Gorki who came
to the front with an appeal in
defense of Ilebrew writers in Rus-
sia when they were threatened by
the ever persecuting Yevsektsia.
Lenin listened to him and saved
the Ilabimah, and many a He-
brew writer owes his freedom to
him. Chaim Nachman Bialik
might never have landed in Pal-
estine if it were not for Gorki's
intercession.

The local chairman. Henry M.

These leaders also stress the
