A prejudiced idea among thee-
logians and philosophers that the
Hebrews are incapable of phil-
osophy is attacked in this most in-
teresting book. A supplement to
his earlier work, "The Hebrew
Literary Genius," Dr. MacDonald
continues his defense which he al-
ready incorporated in his eerier
volume.
Showing that "the Hebrew had
fundamental philosophical ideas
and attitudes," Dr. MacDonald de-
clares that "the more formal ex-
pression of these reached in such
later books as Job, Proverbs, Ec-
clesseastes and Eccle.siasticus."
Maintaining that the Hebrews
were philosophers and not physi-
cists, Dr. MacDonald writes:
"Their possible conflict was not of
science and religion but of God and
man. For the personality of Jeho-
vah was being scrutinized weighed
and judged by man. So their phil-
osophy in the ultimate analysis,
while always remaining theistic,
might be irreligious in several de-
gree, and ways. That is its unique-
ness and interest; and in all its
attitudes it was • true philosophy."
One of the most important chap-
ter. in the book deals with "Ree-
ser' Among the Hebrews" and dis-
cusses the Books of Job and Pro-
verbs', In • follow-up chapter, "The
Eternal Reason," • most critical

study of Ben Sire is incorporated
to prove the author's contentions.
Biblical students will find par-
ticular interest in the author's
discussion of Ecclesiastes and his
comments on Greek influence on
the Ilebrews. Dr. MacDonald main-
tains that the Hebrews under-
went a sharp change under the in-
fluence of Greek literature and
philosophy.

Bloch Publishing Co., 31 W.
31st St., New York, has just pub-
lished a brief novel by Jennie
Rosenholtz, "Upon Thy Door-
posts," (11.50), dealing with the
pioneering period of the '70s in
the Northwest. In 167 pages, the
author deals with the life of a
Jewish family in a farming com-
munity and describes its acclima-
tization in a strange environment.
Herself a descendant of a family
of early settlers, the author de-
scribes the Jewish life of her
heroes in the community near St.
Paul. She devotes a considerable
portion of the space in the book
to • description of the °beery-
ante of the festivals by the Mar-

simply told, and bears the marks
of fine understanding of Jewish
