Gripped by a reign of fear and terror, Palestine this week reached a most critical

short children's story which is to
be found—or should be found—
in every important Jewish chil-
dren's anthology. "The Little
Jewish Boy," one of the short
stories in "Apples and Honey"
edited by Nina Salomon, and
used in other anthologies, is a
most pathetic tale. In it Gorki
tells the story of a little lad who
is the subject of derision and who
is threatened by a crowd of Gen-
tile boys. He does not run away,
otters to show the lads some
tricks, and after he had amused
them stretches out his hand and
begs for money. "The request
aroused-a hostile attitude," bat
the author, who had only seven
kopecks with him, gave the boy
two of the coins. It then de-
veloped that this lad was help-
ing his father when both fell from
a trapeze. The father was still
in bed but the boy set out to
earn something in order to help
his family which now found it-
self in distress. Some dark
blotches on his blouse turned out
to be blood stains.
"It doesn't hurt any
■
more,"
he said with the same kindly
smile. "It doesn't hurt
■ any
more, and it is healing."
And in the manly way that
is becoming a hero, he looked
into my eyes and spoke again
with the tone of • serious and
grown-up
person.
"Do you
think I have been doing this
for myself? I assure you that
I have not. My father . . .
we haven't a kopek, ■
and my
father hurt himself so badly.
So you see, I have to work to
hard and, to make matters
worse, we are Jews, and every
body pokes fun at us. Good-
bye."
"It is such a simple and in-
significant story—is it not?" the
great author asks us as he paints
the pathetic picture of the little
boy whose tragedy is the tragedy
of his people, and then he con-
cludes the tale with the following
significant paragraphs:
"More than once through my
darkest days, I have thought
of the good cheer and courage
of the little Jew boy.
"I think of the little boy,

Dr. Stephen S. Wise, president
of the American Jewish Congress
and the committee of Jewish dele-

preparation for the first session of
the World Jewish Congress, has
informed the national offices of the
American Jewish Congress of the
progress being made throughout
Europe to be represented in Geneva
when the World Jewish Congress

of Aug. 8.
In a number of countries of
Europe, despite the difficulties in-
volved, Dr. Wise reports the use
of the direct ballot is being in-

the sessions of the World Jewish

Rumania and Poland.
