June 5, 1936 Sivan IS, 5696 A Successful Campaign Although it closed $22.000 short of the coal, the Allied Jewish Campaign was a NI•markable success. The raising of $500,- 000 from approximately 9,000 contribu- tors is an herculean task and is in itself a triumph. But what makes this drive stand out as a great community victory is the determination of a group of men. under the leadership of Sidney J. Allen, not to permit the campaign to be put to a finish until every cent of the needed balance is raised. The enthusiasm and devotion thus instilled in a group of de- voted leaders is the most encouraging ele- ment in the entire campaign. and justifies 'whatever jubilation may be inspired in celebrating what we mantain was a very suotewful drive. the issues surrounding them, behind closed doors, and attempt to stifle discussion by writing "personal and not for publication" letters. They do an even great injustice when they threaten us with the possibil- ity of a pan-Arabic congress which may be stimulated by the holding of Jewish cougresses. This is a ridiculous threat for many reasons. and especially on the ground that if there are justified griev- ances on the part of the Arabs they should be aired out publicly. But the' Congress proponents have so much faith in the jus- tice of the Jewish cause and in the fair- ness of Jewish aspirations in Palestine. that we do not fear public discussion of our problems. We demand frank and open consideration of the issues confront- ing us and we hope that the world will listen to us when we publicly express our grievances. The fight on the Congress issue is be- tween the democratic forces in Jewish life and the group represented by the Ameri- can Jewish Committee which insists on private, behind-the-scenes discussions of Jewish matters which should be as vitally viewed by the world at large as it is by us. because it is the world at large that must be made to see the injustice of con- tinually hemming us into a trap from which we may not be able to escape unless justice should triumph. We believe that the American Jewish Committee is wag- ing a lasing battle, and that in the end all Israel will be mobilized behind the movement for a World Jewish Congress. Brandeis' Anniversary Teddy—June 5—marks the 20th anni- versary of the elevation of Justice Louis D. Brandeis to the Supreme Court behch. For liberal forces this anniversary is an tension for rejoicing. For 20 years Mr. Justice Brandeis has been writing history as a defender of human rights and derho- cratic government, His opinions form strong weapons for our form of govern- rent and are a veritable Bible for the lib- eral elements. For Jews this anniversary is an occas- ion for even Treater celebration because Mr, Justice Brandeis contributions to liberal thought have served as tributes to our people whose joys and sorrows he has shared so gloriously. It is a great privilege to join in con- grabilating Mr. Justice Brandeis on his 20th anniversary as a member of the high- est court in our land. The Black Legion Lights from Shadowland (Copyright. Perhaps, in some instances, I have also created a friendlier attitude. And to dispose the military'mind in our favpr is ■ very salutary and a most necessary piece of work. . . The other sphere, hitherto inaccessible to us, is the sphere comprising the small town and farming population. Their numbers reach into the scores of millions. Though they are for the most part inarticulate, self-centered and fluc- tuating between the extremes of materialism and some kind or other of religious fundamentalism. they forte nevertheless, the nation's center of gravity. :Every movement, every cause, and every leader if they are to achieve national im- portance, must, first of all, secure a mandate from these multitudes. Indeed, not only a mandate, but the sinews of war as well. In fine they ere • group that can not and must not be left out of reckoning. It is. therefore. not at all surprising to see the frantic efforts anti-Semites are everywhere making to poison the mind of this amorphous mass of the nation against the Jew. And in this they are tremendously aided by three natural aLnes,to-wito ignorance, indolence and credulity. A few personl experiences, illustrative of the foregoing. come readily to mind: , The postmaster of one of the little towns in my zone once said to me: '- I see you have - written a letter to a girl rained Sharon—who is ,she!" "My daughter," I replied "The hell it is!" demurred the official "Do you mean to tell me that you, a Jewish rabbi, would 'give his daughter an Irish name!" • I smiled and referred him to the second •shaper of the Song of Songs.
