Who Are the "Hot-Heads?"
Elsewhere in this issue appear the con-
trasting views on the subject of the World
Jewish Congress, as debated by Dr. A.
Coralnik and Dr. A. J..Rongy.
The phrase that will especially hurt.the
Congress supporters is Dr. Rongy's charge
that they are "hot-heads" in Jewish life.
If it requires hot-headedness to intercede
in behalf of oppressed Jewish commun-
ities, why do even the 'opponents of the
Congress movement send emissaries to
Washington to plead for Jewish rights?, Is
private, behind-the-scenes intercession less
apt to be charged as "internationally con-
spiring" than a public expression of re-
sentment?
Dr. Rongy is too prominent a figure in
Jewish life, he is too devoted a Jewish
leader, to be charged with meanness.
Somehow, however, we feel that his views
are unfair, just as we are convinced that
at this time they are illogical. Dr. Rongy
continues to suffer from the fear that the
non-Jews may charge us, with a conspir-
acy. But our "international strength" has
not stopped pogroms in Poland, has not
defeated Nazism, has not secured our just
rights in Palestine. We are the stepchil-
dren of the world, and we must raise our
voice unitedly in a demand for consider-
ation and for humane treatment!
Not only do we consider Dr. Rongy dead
wrong in his views, but we believe that he,
too, like Dr. Coralnik, will soon be within
the ranks of the World Jewish Congress
movement. Action will yet speak louder
than words—and action will be the best
missionary among the deriders of the Con-
gress movement.
Relief for Polish Sufferers
Although we have just concluded a most
urgent appeal for funds, we dare not re-
main unaffected by the additional appeal
that is now being made in behalf of the
sufferers from the Polish discriminations
against our people.
There is not a spot on the face of the
earth, not even in Germany, where Jews
suffer as much privation as in Poland.
There are physical assaults, economic dis-
crimination, political oppression—all tend-
ing to make of Jews third-rate citizens and
totally to annihilate their position as hu-
man beings.
The sum of $25,000 assigned as a quota
for Detroit is a -mere pittance. But if it
is raised as part of the special $1,000,000
drive conducted by the American Commit-
tee Appeal for the Relief of Jews in Pe-
land, it will add a substantial sum to the
amount that is to be appropriated for re-
lief in that country by the Joint Distribu-
tion Committee, which was one of the ben-
eficiaries of the Allied Jewish Campaign.
Words are positively inadequate in the
present crisis. Anyone who reads the news
needs little else to appeal to him in be-
half of sorely-stricken Polish Jewry. Im-
mediate action is needed to provide relief,
to save as many as possible from economic
ruin, to create funds for the settlement of
large numbers in new centers of immigra-
tion.
Detroit Jews are asked for an additional
mite to help ease the sufferings of 3,500,-
000 Jews. Our self-respect dictates to us
that we must not reject the present Polish
relief drive.
Refuge or Home?
Is Palestine a mere pls.,:e of refuge or
is it to be a home for the Jewish settlers?
To many Jews the repeating of this
question after so many years of Jewish ef-
fort in Palestine will sound superfluous,
because the vast majority takes it for
granted that if Jews are not to be at home
in Palestine, then neither will they be able
to consider it as a haven, because it will
then he without security.
But the question must be placed, be-
cause dyed-in-the-wool anti-Zionists, with-
out regard for reality, assume to revive
their stand of 30 years ago by broadcast-
ing an opinion which lets the community
know that they are in favor of Palestine
as a place of refuge but that they continue
to be horrified by the mere thought of po-
litical effort on behalf of Jewish resettle-
ment in Palestine.
The anti-Zionist propagandists, among
whom are unfortunately to be found prom-
inent Reform rabbis who command import-
ant audiences, are not only impractical in
adhering to an outworn philosophy of Jew-
ish life, but they fail to see the practical
implications in any colonization movement
Even if the colonization of Palestine did
not involve the very important historical
elements which call for the redemption of
Jewish life and Jewish idealism, of Jew-
ish culture and the Jewish language, the
movement would nevertheless demand the
Political sanction of world powers and the
Protection of the nations of the ,world. It
never was possible to separate inter-
and so Many nationals are involved in the
movement.
It is much easier to be destructive than
to be constructive. Anyone who speaks
of Palestine as being desirable as a place
of refuge, and in the next breath adds to
the endorsement a "but," is merely under-
ming the great and historic work that
Jewry is carrying on at this period in our
history. This is not a time for "buts," and
it is well that those who are conditionally
endorsing Palestine's settlement should re-
alize that their numbers are dwindling to
insignificance and that the vast forces in
Jewry have learned the importance of po-
litical backing for all our. colonization ef-
forts. Furthermore, we are confident that
Jews everywhere appreciate so greatly the
importance of Jewish cultural renaissance
in Palestine that they will not be misled by
attitudes which are far from constructive.
The work in Palestine demands the
united efforts of our people everywhere,
and Jewish leaders should encourage such
a unity rather than inject elements which
contribute to -discord rather than to co-
operation. We urge these leaders, espe-
cially the Reform rabbis, to change their
tactics, and to join in the effort for Pal-
estine's reconstruction as a haven not
merely for the Jewish body but also for
the Jewish soul. If Palestine is to be re-
built as a nationally proud Jewish center
which, will provide security for the mind
as well as for the body, then it must con-
tinue to have the political sanctions of the
, governments of the world, in securing
which. Jews MUST carry on political work.
In his excellent article on this subject
which appeared in our issue last week,
James I. Ellmann, president of the Zion-
ist Organization of Detroit, has ably ana-
lyzed the entire situation. It is to be hoped
that henceforth confusion will be elimin-
ated in the discussion of the Zionist politi-
cal issue, and that there will be even
greater politically-practical unanimity on
the question than has already been
achieved.
Situation in Palestine
The situation in Palestine is serious, but
far from hopeless. Disturbances continue
uninterrupted, but as time goes on it be-
comes evident that the Arabs are the
greater sufferers, that the rank and file
of Arab workers and tradesmen realize
this, and that they are beginning to rebel
against the misdirection of their leaders.
It is regrettable that the British admin-
istration in Palestine did not take a firmer
stand in the present crisis. Much blood-
shed might have been averted had the au-
thorities acted with greater determination.
The criticisms leveled against High Corn-
missioner Wauchope in the House of Com-
mons and in the London press, the con-
demnation of the action by the Colonial
Action in selecting a new inquiry commis-
sion to investigate conditions in Palestine,
at a time when a firm stand is, needed
against hooligans, are indications that
there is much for which British officials
can be blamed.
Out of it all may come a great deal of
good. The first sign of hope comes from
two directions:
1. The granting of 4,500 new certi-
ficates for additional Jewish settlers in
Palestine, making it possible for approxi-
mately 20,000 to settle in the Jewish
Homeland in the coming four months.
2. The unloading of boats at Tel Aviv
rather than bedlam-ridden Jaffa, thus en-
couraging the hope that a port may be
built in Tel Aviv, which will become firm-
ly established as a center of trade in the
Near East.
Palestine will undoubtedly contribute
many anxious moments to Jews through-
out the world. There will be other spor-
adic outbursts and many sacrifices will
have to be made until our hopes are com-
pletely realized. But we shall not be de-
terred in our work. The efforts for the
reconstruction of our cradleland go on,
and nothing can stop them. Arab propa-
gandists must realize that a terroristic
campaign will not deter us in our great
pioneering venture.
Palestine will be rebuilt, and the Arab
people will continue to benefit from such
redemption. But the instigators of po-
groms must have their underground cam-
paign curbed and their vicious terrorism
uprooted. It is up to the British authori-
ties to assure peace and to work with us
for the attainment of harmony with our
Arab neighbors.
The Late Professor Gottheil
Prof. Richard Gottheil, head of the Se-
mitics department of Columbia Univer-
sity, whose death occurred on May 24, has
indelibly engraved his name in the annals
of Jewish history. Scholar, leader, pion-
eer Zionist, he has been in the forefront
of important Jewish undertakings.
As the first president of the Zionist
Federation of America he ranks first
among the pioneers in this country's ef-
forts in behalf of Palestine. It must be
recorded also that his father, Rabbi Gustav
Gottheil, and the late Rabbi Max Heller
of New Orleans were the first Reform
rabbis to become associated with Zionism,
and for many years they were practically
the only Reform leaders to permit their
names to be associated with the move-
ment.
As a great scholar, as the author of an
important history of the Zionist movement,
for the numerous research works credited
to him, Dr. Gottheil has earned the honors
that have been accorded him, and will be
accorded his memory.

Why the United Front in British Jewry Fails
By WILLIAM ZUKERMAN

LONDON—One of the results of
the Nazi upheaval in Germany has
been the social awakening of Brits

history of this community, not
even in the days of the great

been so fully alive to their Jewish
obligations and responsibilities as
they are at present and never be-
fore have British Jews made such
a clear bid for leadership of world
Jewry.
An experienced observer of Jew.

British Jewry now the same fer-
ment of social sentiment and forces
which distinguished the American
Jewish community during and soon
after the Great War, when the
Joint Distribution Committee was
formed and one of the greatest

consent that period witnessed the
most beautiful flowering forth of

The present movement in Ens-

There is only one marked dif ;
ference between the position of
American Jewry 15 years ago and
of British Jews today. This that
while the social awakening in the
United States after the War in-
cluded the mass of American
Jewry of all classes, including
labor, the awakening in England
is limited primarily to the finan-
cially higher strata of Jewish so-
ciety. In the United States, the
Joint Distribution Committee
which undertook the vast collec-

the American Jewish Committee,
representing the higher Middle
Class, the Central Relief, repre-

People's Relief, representing Jew-
ish labor. This composition was
not merely mechanical; it fully
reflected the state of mind and
feeling of American Jewry of that
time, The whole of Jewish society ,
labor included, participated in that
eesiel awakening. The People's
Relief, even if it did not raise
anything like the huge sums col-
lected by the Middle Class organ-
rations, nevertheless supplied its
full quota of enthusiasm. It was,
.n fact, the poor East Side of
New York which lit the flame and
kept up the fire of that remark-

booklet.
There are numerous historical
references in the book which also
reveals the manner la which not
only Jews, but Catholics, Protest-
ants, Pacifists and workers, are
being persecuted by the Hitlerites.
On pages 18 and 19 there is an
interesting quotation from Heine
who prophesied the coming of the
present brutal regime.
Among the most interesting
chapters is the one dealing with
the city of Frankfurt-am-Main.
There are references here to hair-
rising brutality by Nazis toward
their fellow citizens whose political
thoughts they display.
This little and popularily priced
booklet is packed full with a vast
amount of facts interestingly got-
ten up, well written, and compiled
in popular fashion.
The book concludes with the fo'.-
lowing most Interesting epilogue.
